Creating casting texture on AFVs

Post by Stokesy44 »

Good afternoon All,

Something just popped up on my FB feed. Its a technique for adding casting texture to tanks. Now I know adding casting texture is common, and a lot of people use Mr Surfacer to do it, but the materials I saw being used are new ones on me.

The materials involved are filler (sounds ok to me) AND Tamiya Extra Thin Cement - WTF???

We cant upload videos here on the forum (just as well given all the pervs) so I have added screenshots below to make it look interesting!

I don't think you can argue with the results

Any thoughts? One thing I would say is that i would imagine it really stinks and you would definitely be on the clock given how fast TET evaporates.
Its been tried and tested, it works! So don't blame the system if you're no good.

Um... I'd be doing that in the spray booth - fumes much. I could see it working but like you said, you'd have to work fast. I seem to recall thinning Humbrol filler with tube glue in the past.

Does give it a different look compared to Mr Surfacer perhaps better.
The putty isn't readily available locally and Tamiya putty might work as well. Still the same issue for me unless I can include it in a BNA order.
Thanks for sharing.

I would think any decent filler would work as long as it wasn't the grainy 'tetrion' type. It wouldn't have to be a modelling product.

I tell you one thing though. Any application session would be a great way to get high!

Mr Surfacer 500 is a thick paint that will do the same thing out of the jar.

Yep, feels a bit like someone's trying to reinvent the wheel? :th:

Yes. Why complicate it when it's tough enough already.

I think it must be quite difficult to come up with genuinely new processes and there's pressure in today's world to come up with new content all the time.

Would this, or Mr Surfacer even, work for creating vinyl roofs on cars I wonder...

Yes. You'd just to stipple it as it was drying. Also you could paint the plastic with thin cement. Then press a texture into it to mould in a texture.

Its the curse of the age. At least on the forum all we're doing is trying to generate discussion and provide info, such as we do on new releases etc. We should have a new Friday diatribe on 5 June and the new releases thread is always being updated - without an influencer or a like in sight ;)

Cool - thanks Cor - I can see that working well. I think I'd do it on a scrap bit of plastic first as a test though.

smart idea. use different materials to press into the wet cement. only limit is your imagination.

I'll give it a go - I've been wondering about how to do the vinyl roof on my Jag when I build it and this seems like a good idea.
