1/72 ACADEMY JU-87G STUKA

I started this kit last night and thought id do it with a build tread. I forgot to take pics of the sprues before hand so Il just get into the build pics.

The cockpit internals are very well detailed but I decided to add in some lead wire to jazz it up some more. I just used some artistic licence so the wiring aint accurate but I like the effect
I used 0.5 and 0.2 wire

The cockpit colour is called out as RLM66 so it was sprayed with Tamiya XF-24 Dark Grey and the red for the switches and wires is Revell 34 Ferrari Red, the yellow is Revell 16 Sandy yellow, I find the revell acrylic great for brush painting in small details. The instrument panel was sprayed with Tamiya XF-69 NATO Black and dry brushed with Cidatel Dry Necron Compond and Longbeard Grey these are fantastic, There is a decal supplied for the panel but I think it looks rubbish.

Last was the seat belts, my normal root for making scratch seat belt is to use tamiya tape but I never do them in scale ( i always make them too thick ) so I went with a new method to me which was to use Lead wire and flatten it out with the side of a paint brush and I must say im very happy with the out come, I just added a small bit of PE for the leather pads on the lap belts.
I painted them with Tamiya XF-49 Khaki

Everything the recieved an Enamel wash which was a mix of black and brown and the sprayed with Tamiya XF-86 Flat Clear

Promising start! Great paint job.

Good choice to use the wiring. It always adds something extra, was it accurate or not. You've done great job with it. I've never built Academy kits. How's the molding in general? Interior seems fine.

Thanks Olli, Im a big fan of academy kits. Iv build 4 or 5 of there kits and all have been of the highest quality but the only problem is the decals are shocking but iv seen that on a lot of there newer kits the decals are printed by Cartograph so they would be a lot better. Id recommend picking up one of there kits

Hi all, Finally got back to my work bench after almost a week...I was starting to get withdrawal.

So just a small update on how its going together. I joined up the fuselage half last week and filled in the area around where the rear of the cockpit is, the part that joins there aint that great a fit


The front of the fuselage just needed a small bit of filler seen here


The wing assembly went perfect, except for me causing some minor damage when removing the parts from the sprue


I have the wings glued onto the fuselage and I must say I have never witnessed such a good fit on a model before, no filler is needed especially where on the under side where the rear fuselage meets wing section...I always seem to have problems around that area. I also had to rescribe panel lines which I had sanded off




Thats where im at for now, hopefully I get more work done this week

Just a small update,
I tackled the rear wings and for some reason Academy put injector pins in the center of the wing struts Im a huge fan of Academy but sometimes they do things a bit oddly



And the gun wings????..what ever they are they look like wings, I think the guns look fantastic but again bloody injector pins


Gun mounts and coolers fitted without trouble



And now the controls for the flaps, the location holes are way to big for the parts


I watered down some Perfect Plastic Putty and applied it with a brush, its gonna take a few applications to fill in the holes, Iv also applied it to other areas that need some work



Next was to take care of the bloody hole in the wing where a light should be


I cut some plastic card and glued it in place the filled in the rest with putty, Iv used some stretched sprue and made a bulb and have it glued in place but iv no pictures of it yet as my batteries went dead Ill have them on the next update



Last up is the canopy which iv masked and have fitted but its gonna be open so I just have the access doors tacked in with dots of PVA glue


Thats me for now, I have all the filler cleaned off and the wing light sorted, So next im gonna tackle the landing gear and then get it ready for paint.

So for this update Iv got the paint sorted and I had some detail to guns

After painting the underside I went on to the upper surface and started with Vallejo Model Air 71.015 Olive Grey which is RLM 71, its my first time using Vallejo paint and it sprayed very nice and gave a nice semi-gloss finish



Next up was to mask up for the splinter camo but I must say I enjoy masking for this type of camo


Iv been searching the net for pics of the Stuka cannons and found a few that showed plumming and leads running into them so I decided to try replicate this ( I did say TRY )
So here is the before pic

This side was a pig to get into



Thats me for now, Next up is the decals. Im gonna be using decals by Extra Decals, there not for this version of the stuka but anything is better than Academys decals....there shocking but I will need to use the stencil ones

This is the final update, its all done and sitting patiently waiting for its final reveal shots.

So when it came to decals I just couldnt bear to use the kit ones so I went with the Extra Decal set for the axis battle for Malta, there for the bombing version and not the cannon version but im not a rivet counter so it dont bother me


After the decals I gave it 2 coats of klear before giving it a pin was, I used a mix of enamels, I didnt want them to stark so I used these colours mixed with low odor white spirits


Here it is after the pin wash



After the wash was cleaned up I gave it 2 coats of Tamiya XF-86 Clear Matt. The the fun began, adding it the exhaust/oil/fuel streaks
The exhaust streaks where done with a mix of Tamiya XF-1 black and XF-10 Brown done in 2 stages. First was a mix that was about 70% brown then I came in with a mix that was about 90% black but was heavly thinned.
I used this mix for oil streaks then used Tamiya X-10 smoke for fuel leaks.
Last on the weathering ( a part I normally do first ) was to add chipping, I used Cidatel Runfang silver and applied it with a ripped make-up sponge and a 0000 brush


These are rubbish pictures, Il have better pics tomorrow for the reveal shots in the finished work section



Iv really enjoyed this build and would recommend the kit if your looking for a stuka...just buy after market decals.
Yes its not perfect and some parts need a bit of work and filling but this is what we do as modelers.

The "gun wings" are the magazine cartridges feeding 37mm ammo into the BK-37 gun.
12 rounds per gun.
On the other side its the spent shell collector. (metal was in short supply)

Thanks mate, I done my homework after I started this build and discovered what the "wings" where I found some great shots on the net of them and I must say Academy did and awful attempt at replicating them. Id say they would benefit greatly with some P.E. or good resin replacements.
I didnt know that they collected the spent shells, thanks for the info

Its great having a big Luftwaffe fan on the forum, I may hit you up for some info in the future .
