Airfix Battle of Britain Spitfire Gift Set 1/24 Half Price

Post by Muzrik »

Hi guy's I came across this while on the ARGOS web site, Item number 191/1301
And it's going for £29.99, I only ever built 1/72 & not long back to the hobby so what I'm really asking,
Is this worth adding to the Stash? For later when I think I can do it some justice,

I watched the show & know Lee's stand on Airfix,
I was wondering what the rest of you thought ?

Thanks Stephen.
Cheers Steve

In my humble opinion I would say save your money - unless you don't mind a -what I call - primitive kit... The model is now around 50 years old and while the shape is correct it suffers from needing a full overhaul with replacement after market sets. The plastic is clunky - I recently helped a neighbour who had one as a Christmas Present - the kit suffers from chunky plastic and requires a lot of clean up.

Of course if you wish to detail or superdetail it is a good base price - but I think for 1/24 a better kit is the Trumpeter - some will disagree - there are mistakes but it goes together better. However if you want accurate and in a bigger scale the Tamiya 1/32 are the best...I would also look at the Hasegawa kits too. I am critical of Airfix as I feel this is one of the kits they should have retooled and they should bring out a MkIX in 1/24. They seem to rely to heavily on their 1/72 catalogue and often on their back catalogue.

As above. It is an old kit with several detail and fit issues. However if you feel like putting the time in you can make a nice looking model from it.

If you are looking for a big cheap spitfire apparently the new tool Revell 1:32 one is due out soon(A Mk 2 if I recall) so that might be worth checking out. you won't have the chance to add in engine detail etc etc with it like you can the airfix one but it's bound to fit better and have sharper detail. Instructions can be seen here http://www.revell.de/fileadmin/import/i ... _MK_II.PDF

On another site it's not gone down too well with some of the detail fanatics but if it's as good as the other new tool 1:32 Revell's it should be great value for money. The ultimate big spitfire kit are the Tamiya 1:32 ones, but they are 3-4 times the price of the airfix (and probably Revell) ones so are probably once in a lifetime kits (at least on my budgets anyway)
