Guidance for my Armor collection/theme needed

Post by Raptor »

Hi all,
May I start by saying I am far from history buff and require any help I can to start a theme for my Armor kits.

I want to narrow down my searches when buying kits at model shows etc as atm it is painful as I can never decide what kit to buy out of the 1000 or so on the shelves.

I also want to learn a little history and would be happy to research up anyone ideas for a theme. if someone can point me in the right direction it would be mightily appreciated.

I have bought a nice Dragon King Tiger so if this Tank could fit into the theme that would be a nice start for me.

Thanks
Andy

Well as a theme you could do 'The development of German Tanks during WW2' starting with the PzI /Pz35/Pz38 right through to the King Tiger. Depending on what you would like to build you can then take in Self Propelled Guns and Tank Destroyers. Than little lot will keep you busy and your wallet in pain for quite a long time.

Very nice idea, Thank you.
Still feels a little open ended though.
Might go with it depending on if anyone else comes up with an idea i like more ;)

Great advice from 5C, then again that left you short...

The best answer is what "you" or "why" you want to do it. What draws you to a subject or not and go from there?

As 5C stated, a partiuclar subject developed to its fullest will keep you busy and out of funds for quite some time. You may be interested in a different approach.

Be warned a little long, but it does explain the rationale and cost savings in having a "planned theme"

As subjects for a theme, by necessity, this can only be an entirely subjective approach. You could as a sake of argument follow something along the lines of :-

A development of armour between certain years,
A development of armour by a certain country,
A development of armour by certain groups, (i.e. different weight classes, sub-groups, specialist tanks (engineering, vehicle recovery, Hobart's Funnies)
Tanks used in different battles, tanks which never seen active service.
Armour that has personal meaning to yourself or family.
Or even the good old stand-by "I saw it, I wanted it, it was a bargain" :)

As you can see the options are fairly endless. I would suggest that once you have found a general theme the guys here will be more than happy to help in any way we can. Just to let you know that Lee does have an extensive lending library on the site in the reference section, just let him know what you want and I'm sure that he will be happy to let you borrow them.

Considering that my normal theme consists solely of the word "GIMME!!"....

How about "Tanks of the Russian Front" or something similar?

thanks for all the advice so far guys.

Definitely going for some sort of German Armor theme I think, been researching a few German tanks and i'm impressed both by their looks and the engineering.

I need to read up on my history a little i think, need to narrow down the tanks a little.... maybe to a year, a battle or a specific time of the war.

Any ideas on this please let me know :)

Thanks

Excellent  I know a certain group that do uniquely "paper" panzer etc... nothing wrong with that. It is a theme, more importantly it is "their" theme :)

Decided to go with the theme... tanks of the eastern front.
Maybe to start I will pick a particular battle and get the kits to suit that then move on (thinking the battle of kursk?)

Thanks all for your advice, appreciate it.
