Blu-Tak Camo Spraying Question...

Post by Merlin »

I've just tried my first attempt at using Blu-Tak (well, actually White-Tak) for masking a camo scheme for airbrushing, and I'm quite pleased with the result for a first effort.
But I was wondering... Can the white-tak be reused or should it be discarded after every use?

I've reused it too, but there was a slight problem.
I'm used to roll a small bit of blu tak to remove the tiny bits of blu tak from the surface of the model, and it had a bit of paint, which got into the model. That made me have to respray again. so, be careful to let the paint fully dry :)

I've found that if you leave it sitting on a model for a long time in a warm area, it can leave a residue behind.

I've heard this about the blu-tak, but apparently the white-tak is better and doesn't leave a residue. I read this somewhere but can't remember where,: Has anybody come across this residue with either the blue or white?

Blue tack has oil in, white tack is oil free :thumb2:

I use Elmer's brand of tack - it's orange : :

I've not tried this method yet as most of my aircraft do not have the requires camo, however I have a few Spitfires to do as a project in 1/48 and I am keen to try it.

I take it that I need 'white-tac' not the blue stuff I already have...

Don't think play dough is sticky enough. Might be ok for flat wings but to curve around fuselages I'm not sure it'll stick.

I'm thinking of trying this and I'm OK with using white tack. What I'm wondering about is using Copydex to fill the gaps. Are there any issues to watch out for there?

Not sure, but it's very similar to maskol. I would think it would be alright, they wouldn't let kids use it if it was full of nasties. Try it on a bit of scrap first to see if it reacts with anything.

Please do pre-Testings on the same colour paints you will be using...... and see if your Alternate solutions
leave an Oily residue on your base-coat?...

Would be sad if we hear some of you busted a Vein ! after doing it to a real model !

folding the old tack can let some HAND FAT *oils in the putty and later contaminate your Flat paints ?
at the price they sell that stuff...

maybe Fresh is the way to go ???
