Matchbox 1/72 Dornier Skyservant

Building this for a YouTube group build as well as our club's next theme/comp night. Needless to say, in both cases, that theme is Airfix. I mean Matchbox.

Had this in the stash as a blast-from-the-past build, so here we go!

Nostalgia trip - Cantonese*-style. (* may not be Cantonese)

Clear parts surprisingly clear!


Some basic detailing as I want it to retain a degree of its Matchboxyness.



Some work was needed to bring the rudimentary tooling up to date.


There was no wing light. It's a big one, so once I'd cut the shape out, clear sprue was too small, so I used a cutting from a block of clear resin from another kit to fill the space.


After sanding and polishing it looks fine.


Took a fair bit of sanding to eradicate the seam lines on that square fuselage and I've used Micro Kristal Klear as the side windows for the time being as the styrene parts fit from the outside. Using the PVA saves me having to mask as I'll just pop them out after painting and replace them with the styrene ones. Ready for some primer....

A little more progress on the Skyservant

I added a few little extra exterior details such as the blade antenna, the foot rails and the tail-mounted pitot tube. Glad to see the 3-colour plastic vanish 'neath the primer though!


First coat of Medium Grey...


Then the Olive for the wacky splinter scheme. I have a tin of Humbrol's Dayglo Orange for the rudder and wing-tips.

I'm keeping the paint scheme fairly clean - not using my usual weathering techniques, mainly because of the fact I want it to still look like a Matchbox kit! If that makes sense...

That looks grand, Gary! Great work all round. This thread has taken me back about 35 years. I had a favourite Uncle (ex RAF) who would pop round every Sunday morning with the newspapers and two Matchbox kits under his arm, one for me and one for my little brother. After a brief fight over the kits we would break out the glue and be flying our planes around the back garden by early afternoon.

Some people say that nostalgia's not what it used to be but you've proven them wrong.

You're turned that old kit around nicely mate....can't believe it's 40 years old! When I lived in England, before moving to the USA in December 1999, I had a lot of original Airfix and Matchbox kits from the 60's and 70's. Now that I started modeling this year, I wish that I'd brought them all with me.

Looking forward to seeing the end result on this one.
