Trumpeter 2S19 Msta-S

Hello Gents .... welcome to my sixth instalment of my SPG fleet build. This time it's the 2S19 from Russia. With the finishing of the 5th one, the K9, I can now finally crack open this beautiful kit of a monster given as a gift by a friend.

So, let's get down do it Shall we?

As usual, box shot -



and the sprues -















The start of the build is pretty much the usual like any AFV; start from the lower hull.

For this particular one, start from the rear hull plate -


The rear hull plate is a separate piece and very well detailed. The strap for the un-ditching log goes on as well as the towing hook on it. After that, the hull plate is glued to the lower hull. There is a slight difficultly trying to make it sit properly but a few second of carefully holding it in place sorted that out -


Next, I had to build the convoy lights and the wire for it. That is comprises of 4 quite small pieces and it was such an assault on my eyes to focus and put it on. But I did it -



Those little convoy lights goes on the hull like so ( it is upside down on the photo ) -


After that, I had to put on these little triangle thingys which I believe are stopper for the wheels swing arms ( so that the arms won't move up so much ) -


Followed up by shocker absorbers which is made up of 4 pieces each -


and they goes on the hull like so; 3 shock absorbers per side -


The non-shocker-absorber arms haven't been glued on yet but I guess you have a pretty good where they goes to from this photo anyway.

After that, I put on the various little things that are needed to be put on to the front and front-bottom -


Followed up with the engineering blade ( I think it was called the engineering blade )


Attached into the slots glued on earlier like so -


After that, it was time to do the wheels and voila .... we now have completed from step 1 through 5 -


and that gentlemen, makes up the entire lower hull. Next step, the upper hull....

Good day guys. Time to update on this W.I.P.

Now that the lower hull is finished, I carried on with the upper one.

Started with gluing two little convoy lights and the hooks -


I encountered my first big problem with this build. The instructions calls for P.E A15 but in truth, it is supposed to be B15. A15 is a very long part and won't fit in anyway at all to to the spot as shown on the manual-


Followed that up with Driver Vision ports. I already put on masking tapes to prepare for the painting process.


Following that is the driver hatch; trumpeter included a little hub kinda thingy that goes underneath the peg of the hatch piece -


Which allows the hatch to open and close like so -


But with the complete lack of any interior, I will just glue it shut later on.
Following that with more parts on the front of the glacis plates and the upper hull ( some sort of spaced step board or something ) -


Switched to the engine deck after that, first started with these little railing/ hinges thingies -


Followed that up with what is shown on the Manual -


and finished off what I needed to do on the engine deck like so -


After that, I move on to the gun lock, which I was dreading.


The gun lock is made up of 19 individual pieces and it looks amazing as you can see from the photo.

The gun lock is attached to the lower hull like so -


and the main lock remains workable -


so are the little locks on top that grips the barrel -


After that, I had to put on this triangular board thingy between the lock -


And now, we have a complete top hull, gun lock and engine deck -


And that's it for this update. I thought this kit was expensive but with this amount of details, I guess £59.99 is not actually bad. Really enjoying this build.

Good day all.. Time to update on this .. I will be putting up the turret this update -

Started with the mantlet made and glued into the inside of the turret -


It is held inside like so -


Quite a stable set up and quite strong. It should be able to handle a metal barrel should a AM company ever made one in the near future.

Closed up with the floor like so - ( a little extra care should be exercised or there will be some gaps along the edge )


The upper back roof of the turret is a separate piece and all these extra appendages have to be glued on - Be careful as you will be dealing with a lot lf small parts -


I had to followed that up with those two plates -


and all three goes on the back of the turret like so-


Glued on all the hatches that need to glued -


And I put on all the little pieces as well as the big tube thingy ( what is that? a lot of russian vehicles has that on them).. again be very careful as you will be putting on so many small pieces -


Followed that up with some kind of air filter pipe and a full P.E Rack ... take extra care with the PE Rack and which way it bends. You need to insert partitions inside and the inner walls has notches for the partition to glue onto. I also glue on the hatch and grab handles on the right side of the turret.


I put on the P.E thread plate on the roof of the hull. Again, be very careful when you glue them. There are very small little pegs and those pegs has to go on to the little slots on the extrusions of the etches.


After that, I built part of the mechanism for the shell feed from outside. The instructions call for the entire mechanism to be built but I strongly suggest building this part first -


and then build the folding down tray and glue on the hinge at the end of the first part -


This is the most fragile part of the turret and GREAT ( and I cannot stress enough ) care must be exercised.

And I built the left Air filter or ventilations pipes and grab handles and I glued on all the thread plate on to roof -


Followed that up with a recoil cylinders; I had to glue on four small pieces on the cylinders and it was such a chore so be careful.


Worked on the barrel; I had to glue on those little P.E pieces along the notches indicated on barrel. The P.E pieces are very small angle and long triangles so they are prone to bending. Be careful. Also, at the perpendicular side of the triangle, there is a little peg that has to go into the slot located on the base ring on the end of the barrel. Be on the look out for that for proper fitting -


Everything goes in nicely; a bit of something to be aware about, make you glue on the muzzle brake after the barrel has gone on.


I built the commander hatch and the DShK machine gun. That hatch and machine gun is attached together much like that of the T-90. I think it is the same as the T-90. Such a lovely piece of moulding, this one-


That and all the other hatches and the big hub for the sight goes on -


After that, I put on the smoke grenade launchers onto the front hull. IF you recall, I point out an error of the mis-labelled P.E part at part 1 of my build. I actually found out where it goes. It goes on the top of the rectangle vision port on the left side of the turret-


I had forgot to build this radiator piece so I build that -


which goes on the end of the engine deck -

Right ... an update is long due on this ...so let's carry on -

I spent three evenings and made up the tracks -


The tracks were a pain to clean but very lovely and beautifully casted.

I carried on the build by building all the storage boxes and parts for the left fender; Be very careful when you put on the little P.E belt buckles-


Which goes on the fender like so -


Boxes for the right fender -


glued onto the fender -


Two short towing cables; the kit supplied a long brass wire so you have to cut them to size-


Testing fitting everything -


and with that, everything except the side skirts are done -




Due to the nature of the kit and parts break down, I had to paint the lower hull and wheels first before working on the tracks and gluing the fenders -




Glued on the fenders after that and finally closed it up with the side skirts -




And the last touch is to glue on those little blade looking thingy that we all see on T-72 hulls-


and now. on to painting... primed and ready, I put on the first colour and masked them -


5 days of studying the photos, painting one layer after another, fixing the damned thing and touching ups over spray and I got this -








Still has alot of problems and many fixings need to be done...... why am I so attracted to this infernal scheme? LOL ...

Hehehe, nope. Not loaded. For 40 years I have followed the Tour de France and when we saw it was coming to UK we set plans afoot.
When it was first announced that TDF would be in London, hotels were charging £500 for basic room. Wife (who is a bloody whizz at finding cheap deals found a self contained flat in Chelsea and Knightsbridge for a week at £500, and it's not to shabby for DW ).
Anyway, your a star for your dedication on this model. The PE alone is ace work. Your work on the chamo alone is

Thank you sir .. but in all honesty, I shy away from challenge but I just can't resist painting this scheme on this baby and regardless of the hiccups and boo-boos, I am really enjoying it ..

Please help on this. ME and Gavin were talking the other day on what colour to use for pin wash on this and we couldn't decide which to use. I'm actually thinking of skipping pin wash entirely as this scheme was used only for the Expo and the vehicle will be presented in a show case enviroment but I don't know .... what colour should I use? or should I just skip pin wash all together ? Mark Varploeg suggest neutral grey for the pin wish. I would like to hear more suggestion and input

Always been a fan of the heavy armour stuff and this certainlly looks a very impressive and comprehensive kit.
