Tom
Thank you very much
I am trying to paint it at the moment but my AK paint is just as thick as water and is no good right now ,way to thin and won't mix all the ingredients
So i will try ro replicate it using tamiya buff and white
To get a decent base coat
But i think the paint has been too cold when it was at the retailer where i got it from
Cold is the biggest problem for acrylic paints as this ruins it
So i will see how it goes

Thanks Ozzie
Too bad that it was needed
I think the atak would have been better
They have resin replacements for things like the mantlet and the mg mount
That's the reason I avoided doing the PE Zim on my Tamiya Panther G.

It's no big deal though
I didn't think of zimmerit when i started planning for this build
If i did i would have gotten the zimmerit well before this sig started
I had the kit in the stash for a few months and the night vision device too
But when i just started Coen mentionned zimmerit and that is when it hit me
I forgot or i didn't plan for it really
My original plan was a tank without zimmerit
But i saw that none of my build panthers has it so i decided this one had to have it
And the shop where i wanted to order some stuff only had this in stock
So i got this
It is not that hard to make the few parts that didn't work with pe
It just takes some time

hi guys
i tought i would do this update as the build is going well and the paint is on
so a update before the weathering makes the updates a bit shorter then they would if i combine the painting and weathering
but i found a little bit of information about the night fighting panthers and the unit that they belong too

so here we go
Image
this is an example of the panther tank with the ir gear in place (fg 1250 and biwa, bildwandler/image converter)
i think it is the same picture Coen uses for reference
it is clear to see that the tank is painted in the ambush camo wich is a combination of a tri tonal camo scheme with dots on the larger colored fields
i don't know wich colors of paint are used for this vehicle since both the green and the dark yellow have several versions

Image
this Panther combines 2 of the green colors that where used by the German army
in this case it has dunkel gelb (dark yellow) dunkel grün (dark green) and what i think is reseda grün (reseda green ral 6011)
but the reseda green has 2 official tones ,there is ral 6011 and 6011 b
the 6011 b is the light shade of these greens

Image
altough the Panthers had there own ir light mounted this was not very powerful
to support the tanks they where joined by these vehicles
this is the sd.kfz. 251/20 ausf.d UHU (owl) this is a half track wich mounts a larger (600mm) infra red search light
with these vehicles the view range of the panthers greatly increased making them that more effective when on there night time hunts

and now for the build
Image
i primed the vehicle with ammo grey primer
after that had dried i wanted to use the late war color set from ak that i have but for some reason (most likely frost) the quality is really bad and the paint is somewhat useless
but i used tamiya paints to mix my own batch of the dunkelgelb III or dg III for short ,this is the really pale and light shade of yellow that was used in the later part of the war
i used white ,buff and dark yellow
i'm not really sure about the ratio but this should come pretty close : 7 parts white , 4 parts buff and 2 parts dark yellow

Image
then i added the first camo color to end up with a armored cow
the chocolatbraun (chocolate brown) from the set was also ruined but this is replaced with vallejo modelair armor brown
this is a almost perfect match to the ak color so i made no changes to it

Image
then the last color was painted on
this is the reseda green from the ak set wich for unknown reason works perfect
this is the ral 6011 b so the light shade and it is the lightest green that was used at the time

Image
overhere you can see that i started the dots wich make it a ambush camo
the idea of the dots is that you use the 2 other colors from the camo scheme
so on the yellow patches you will used the brown and the green
this ofcourse goes on with the other colored patches

Image
and all the dots are done

Image
i then started with the detail painting
the wood is made with a 4:1mix of vallejo modelcolor English uniform and white
the metal is done with mr metal color stainless
after it had dried the wood was dry brushed using vallejo modelcolor smoke
but i seem to have forgotten the the photo

Image
the tow cabbles are in place
i replaced the kit steel wire with copper replacements wich are easy to bend and place the way you want

Image
then the ir gear was finished
the insides are painted with vallejo model color black

Image
the hatches are added aswell
the color is a mix of tamiya flat white and light grey
i mixed this a while back so i don't remember the ratio :shifty:

so that is all for today
i hope you like it , thanks for watching and untill next time
cheers Mark

I think the zimmerit adds a lot but it was a am kit
and ofcourse 2 weeks after the sig started i go out and but the dragon kit with the zimmerit on it :bash:
Would have made a difference i guess as it was cheaper than the kit i used for this
O well now i have a new build to look forward to

Just kidding the kit just build up fast and i didn't have any big problems
Just a few minor things that slowed me down
But i will go on when a other build is painted and chipped
Then i can do the same weathering steps on 3 builds at once and save some time and the mess i make while weathering

Good day my fellow modellers
It is a small update this time but it is because the next one will be about the figure painting and some small items that i plan on using on the figures and diorama
So this will be the final steps before that happens

Image
i tried to clip the commanders toe nails guess i slipped :shifty:
But on a serious note the boots where in the way of getting him in the cupola because the ir gear is in the way
The set of legs on the right are the ones from the kit but didn't work for the figure
The legs he has now are from the spares box

Image
the crewmembers in there places
Idid the chipping aswell but i think the pictures won't really show it
but it is done with vallejo german camo black brown and a piece of sponge
i will post some pics of the chipping later as i forgot to chip the side fenders and it will be part of the weathering update

Image
this is the setup i will go for with the diorama
Altough it only shows the figures and the panther so far

Image
front view
Don't mind the pencil stripes on the wood that was for a other planned build
The balsa wood sides are for the raised insert i will have to make
So the idea is that thw panther rolls up to a street corner where some troops from both the wehrmacht and the ss are in a firefight with the invading soviets
one guy will be warning the tankcrew to get inside the tank and how the situation looks
One soldier on the front left side will be a wounded soldier with his buddy calling the medic
The others will be at the actal corner shooting back at the attackers

So all i have to do is make a ruin wich will be scratch build
A ton of bricks and parts of the building
This will also help to create some height difference for the shooting troops so the won't be in a straight line
And ofcourse the street wich will be homemade aswell , i plan on using styrofoam for this and for the building

So that is all for now
Thanks for tuning in
Cheers Mark

I kbow but i don't like most buildings from manufacturers like verlinden and the resin stuff is very expensive
Miniart could be a option but i never had a good result with those vacuform thingies
And the benefit of scratch building is that it will be custom to the dio i am building , so that is why i want to try this

hi guys
so here is a new update for the panther
this time i have been busy with the weathering
i want a grimy and dusty look for this tank as it will go in a dio that is placed in Berlin so no mud this time
i only used washes so far but with a bit of messing around they can give the result i am after
but let's go to the build for that

Image
i used ak DAK wash on the tank itself and on the wheels
i shall go over the wheels first
the wash was applied with a large (6) round brush and left to dry for about 60 minutes
then i used some thinner for washes to soften it all up and with a bit of kitchen paper i removed all the excess wash
i did this by pushing the paper on the wheels and kept repeating this untill i got what i wanted
so this is a general wash

Image
i then used mig productions dark wash to begin the pinwash
as i always use too much ,you get what you see here on 1 of the road wheels
this can be removed using a brush and a bit of thinner
just make the wash wet and after a few seconds you can remove it with either the brush or with a piece of kitchen paper
and that is all for the wheels
i will add some dust when i put it on the dio so it will have the same color of dust on all the subjects in the dio

Image
the DAK wash was also applied on the hull and turret
because it has zimmerit a lot of the wash will be left on there even after cleaning it
the only way i could remove the wash was with a brush and then brushing it down the surface

Image
altough very hard to see the base color on the hull is now discolored and a bit darker
so the grimey effect is there

Image
then the turret and hull also received the dark wash as a pin wash
again note the too large amount of wash used

Image
i used the wash around all the raised details and panel lines
after i remove the excess it will look better

Image
here all the excess is removed
if you look at the ir gear you can see the effect that the first wash has left
the dark wash is only used to show the details a bit better

Image
still the same step
but the wash is still there to show the weldseam of the hull roof and the plate covering the driver and radio operator

Image
and the result of the engine deck

Image
after a day of drying i started on the streaking
in real life this effect is created when rain falls on a dusty object
the dirt is then drawn down by the water creating these visible streaks
for this i use ak's DAK streaking grime wich is not the best choise for this as this has a greenish tone and it looks a bit like the camo green i used for painting
around parts like the eyelets on the side of the turret i used a bit of rust streaking grime also ak
it is more intresting if you make the streaks in different lenghts
this will create a random look wich is more realistic then uniform streaks

Image
then i used a flat number 2 brush and the thinner again
just moisten the brush (don't soak it) and pull down the paint
in other words make a brushing movement from the top to the bottom with very little pressure
the streaking wash will get disolved and fade in a few strokes

Image
again not that visible but some of the streaks can be seen on the upper glacis plate

but the idea is not to make a very dirty and heavy used vehicle
these tanks where use in the battle of the Seelow heights for the first time and where painted just before they where put into service
the scene i will be just about a week or 2 later so there was not that much time to turn it into a beat up mountain of metal
so the next time i will finish the tank itself as it is now in a coat of matt varnish wich is still drying
after that is done i will pick some small stuff from the spares box to use on the Panther
i don't have any good spare tracks for this as they just won't fit in the holders so i will use them to hold stuff like jerrycans and maybe some other things

so this is all for now
i hope you guys like it so far and untill next time
cheers Mark

Outstanding piece of work! Those washes enhance the zimmerit appeal; the whole effect makes it look like a real scary big cat :thumb1: :thumb1: :thumb1:

Thank you Felis
I did work better then expected :D
But altough i am modelling for 10 years now weathering is the new thing for me as i started doing that on a serious level just 2 years back
Most of all because i found it hard to get good info before that
And altough i am dutch and subscribed to a dutch modelling magazine i didn't help
If no one explains what a wash is ,a beginner won't get to know
But it is a part of the hobby that i am getting better at imo
And practice makes perfect they say

Thank you
I like these late war camo schemes , the colors are different wich makes a nice change to the usual colors you see most of the time
As for the chipping ,i find this a more difficult thing to do
Applying is easy but you do too much before you know it
Cheers Mark

hi guys
so here is my latest update on ther panther
i managed to finish the tank but it still needs the crew figures
but that is the next step for this entire build
there was not that much work left after the last update ,just a bit of dust and rust

so here is how it was done
Image
i mentionned my way of rusting exhaust but i never showed the mix itself
so here it is
it is just a mix of pigment and either Ultimate or tamiya thinner
the colors are : russian earth , old rust and standard rust all from mig productions
i just add a bit of thinner so i can make a paste like mixture wich can be applied with a old brush

Image
it seems i skipped a photo moment
the exhaust was first covered with the russian earth mix
then the old rust was used to cover most of the exhaust surface but i leave some spots alone so you can see the darker basecoat

Image
sorry that it is blurry but this is the next step
these are the dots i made with the standard rust mix

Image
then i came back with the old rust to tone down the bright color of the standard rust
once it is all dry it will give this dusty look

Image
the tops where painted with vallejo gunmetal grey first
once that was dry it was covered with black smoke pigment by mig productions
the base coat shines through in some places but is mostly covered

Image
i then added the wheels and tracks
i used ca glue to stick the ds track on the tops of the wheels to get the saggy look german tanks are known for
i used 3 tweezers to keep the track in place while the glue was drying
these where pushed between the track and the sponson and left there for about 10 minutes

Image
same on this side
the tracks where then covered with mig productions "industrial city dirt" pigments

Image
as a last detail all the horizontal surfaces where lightly dusted with mig productions europe dust pigment
and the jerrycans where added
i used a piece of lead wire (0.5mm) as a rope wich was painted with vallejo modelair hemp paint

and that is the finished panther so far i will start on the figures soon and then the diorama
but here is how i made the jerrycans as i think this could be useful to others
and it is important to share information i think

Image
i know it is a barrel but i can't find the photo with the jerry can
but this is the base color i used on the barrels for the dio and the jerrycans
it is a 50/50 mix of vallejo modelair armor brown and olive brown(i think)
this is used a rust basecolor

Image
i used maskol and a sponge to prepare chipping for the later stages
the barrels and jerrycans where then sprayed with my german grey mix
this is a 75/25 mix of tamiya german grey and sky grey

Image
here are the chipped barrels before any weathering

Image
the jerrycans where masked again using the sponge and maskol

Image
and then painted with tamiya dark yellow
i then used a piece of masking tape to rub over the surface of the jerrycans
this way the maskol is removed fast and all is removed so no leftovers
but the idea is to get chipping in both the rust and the german grey

Image
here the 2 colored chipping is more visible
i applied a wash with ak interactive DAK wash in the step
this was only applied in the recessed details

Image
altough hard to see , i made fuel stains on the barrels and jerrycans
i used ak fuel stains for this
this gives the effect of spilled fuel that leaked from the caps of the cans and barrels

Image
and finally i added some dry mud pigments by mig productions to finish the jerrycans
then they where added to the panther
the barrels will be finished later when i use them on the diorama

and that is all folks
i hope you like it so far
untill next time
cheers Mark

Thank you
Most of the methods i use are from the book FAQ 2
It has very useful tips and tricks aswell as a load of information about wich colors to use and on wich subject
It is a expensive book though but worth having even with the reference to ak products in there but most can be swapped with other products you could already have or make your self
