101st Airborne / 82nd Airborne Resin patch

Post by fly1ngdutchm4n »

Didn't know where to put this patch for it's no model or figure.
But I bought this from Reality in scale, and I thought to show you guys the painting progress on this one.

It's a full resin patch of a screaming eagle, witch I think it's a nice thing to have in the display cabinet, or to add at a 101st airborne diorama.

Image

Image

After a wash with dishwasher soap, I primed it flat black with the airbrush.
the detail came out instantly.

Image

Painted the piece of uniform where the patch is on.
Just base colours, no washes or dry-brushing just yet.

Image

Did a first run on the beak and tongue. These are painted with Valejo game colour.
More layers are needed for the black is shining trough.
Painted the first letter too, but I stopped here for my eyes were getting tired...

Image

More will be seen next update :thumb1:

Nice, now that is something different - fiddly brush work.

Looks great so far Frans.

Thank you Dan :D
I was thinking of airbrushing this one, but a brush gives more realism to the fabric.
And I thought it was nice to have :thumb2:

Combat uniform patches are dull, e.g that bright yellow is not part of the colours scheme. To date you have done a great job on building up the layers. Please slow down. If you want to portrait the uniform badge, by all means. But the texture of this badge is for combat, not uniforms, (uniform = felt), and hence a totally different colour palette. Let me see what I can come up with

Thanks for that info mate, appreciate it! :thumb2:
Guess I'm painting the dress version then eh? Wasn't sure about the "background" for this, or uniform if you like.
So i'm changing the colour into dress uniform green with I think they were olive drab :thumb1:

I have a 82nd Airborne All America patch on it's way too, and I was thinking yesterday that it would be weird to go in combat with the red and blue colours. So I'm guessing that would be also only worn on dress uniforms and that the patches in combat would be dull.

However, I cam across this pic from World War II veteran James Sapp that is holding a jump jacket, and the All American patch on that jacket is in colour. So I'm a bit confused now...:

All is well good buddy. We have come a long way wrt camouflage.

Yes the 82nd airborne did have colourful badges in WWII. That being said, without being a rivet counter your badge (101 airborne) is made of cloth which can be clearly seen with your photos. I provided the photos of both the cloth version (combat) and the felt version (dress uniform). What you choose to do with it is entirely up to you. Having followed your inspirational work and knowing your attention to detail, I thought I would point a few things out that perhaps you were unaware of, nothing more nothing less :) Keep up the good work :thumb2: :)

Hi guys!
Some more progress done tonight, and even finished this awesome patch!
I did changed the khaki colour for olive drab, so the patch would stand out more.
painting the yellow was hard to do for the black kept coming trough the yellow.
However, that was a plus for I didn't need to add a dark wash.
The white needed 3 layers too.

Image

The edges of the patch was the only thing that I gave a light drybrush with grey. To give the patch a small worn look.
Here's the end result of 2 evenings painting. :D

Image

Now this patch is finished, But I'm not closing this thread just yet...
I did ordered a 82nd Airborne patch, and a Iron cross and T-34 tank plaque too.
So when I'm painting those, I will post them in this tread too. :thumb2:

Thanks for looking guys!

Hello guys! As promised, I would post a photo of the 82nd Airborne shoulder patch also in this tread when finished, So here it is.
This resin patch is also painted in the same way as the 101st. Therefore I post only the end result.
I hope it is as realistic looking as the 101st! :thumb2:

And together:

I also got a Russian tank batch to paint, but that on is on hold for now.

Thanks for tuning in guys! :cheers2:

Just to chime in here, as a 101st fanboy. The verison you're doing is perfect for WWII or Vietnam. I don't what anyone else is talking bout. I have these embroidered patches from both wars in my collection. They look exactly like what you are doing. In WWII they wore the same patches on both uniforms. I have my grandfathers uniforms to prove it.

Thank you Mikey, I used the airbrush for priming and the uniform colour. The patch itself is hand painted. I think painting patches with a brush gives it more realism. The brush strokes gives more effect to the fabric. :D

I like the coloured version much more like they would wore in ww2. I'm glad you said the look exactly like the real ones. It's tough to get the colours spot on for the 82nd patch  Cheers mate

I don't mind mate. I'm putting together a presentation in commemoration of my Father-In-Law who was active in WWII with the 101st Airborne Paratrooper "E" company 2/327th GIR....lots of goodies that will be included from WWII. This will be my final entry into the D-Day GB and will include a C-47 Skytrain that dropped him into Normandy and a 101st Airborne Paratrooper figurine- 120mm high from Verlinden.

Cheers :)

I did a little looking around on the internet, looks like he was involved in Operation Market Garden, from what I discovered.

Let me know what you find, mate :)

Cheers!

'E' company, as in 'Easy Company' - like in Band of Brothers?

sorry if it's an ignorant question :shifty:

That's a question I'm yet to find an answer to myself. I just got his badge and documents in my possession on Sunday, so, some digging around to see if this was the "E" company that was known as "E"-Easy Company. But, that said...Easy Company in the Band of Brothers were 101st Airborne like my Father-In-Law.

Cheers :cheers2:
