A question.

What do the ISM organisers think about some of the competition charging subscriptions for watching youtube vids and using forums (flory springs to mind). Doesn't this add a more elitist feel (i.e. people with access to paypal and money) to parts of the hobby when surely we should be encouraging anybody to get involved especially a new generation.

That's a good question, I'll answer that now though, all I'll say is why pay for anything you can get for free from the ISM forum and you tube channel

There was also a mention (or rather a sly dig) on one of the paid channels/forums that their prizes are not donated by sponsors, that's all well and good except instead they are paid for by the members paying to watch the videos lol, so their paying for their own prizes.. At least here you do actually get prizes for free

I don't think it was elitist, it was just the way it was.

Thing are changing rapidly. The availability of long, in-depth build videos free for all to view via high speed internet on you tube is a relatively recent phenomenon. Before that sites like Phil Flory's hosting videos or the purchase of expensive tutorials on videos or DVDs were pretty much the only game in town.

Like many on this site, I used to be a subscriber to PF and was happy to pay my 3 quid a month and I learned a lot from his builds. However, i cancelled that a month or two ago. Nowadays with the likes of Paul, Lee, Coen and others happy to spread the styrene gospel, the same or better hobby fix is beautifully free and my money stays in my pocket.

Coming back into the hobby I am fortunate or unfortunate to have lots of humbrol enamel paints, and most guides work with acrylics - it would be good to have a small segment on airbrushing with enamels - specifically time between coats (which is less, I believe, due to them being thinned?), and things like washes with them (if different), clean up between colours and when putting the airbrush to bed etc.

Sadly i don't use enamels at all, usage is to labour intensive and drying in measured in days

Hi! I have in the past, made several good aero-models. But have always been disappointed with the canopy. Will you be doing a start to finish section on how to make a realistic looking canopy. I noticed in the past Lee using Klear, And Paul shading his canopy. (F16 build) I for one would love to know how to do it properly. And not winging it. And make it look rubbish.

Ok guys, my question is about compressors and airbrush booths.

I feel like I now have a pretty good understanding of what airbrushes are out there, and for what budget (thanks Paul). But I don't really know anything about the other two main elements of the airbrush set-up. Would you be able to do a short review of what's available (and what's worth the money) in terms of compressors and booths? Basically, I think I'll pick up a Harder & Steenbeck Ultra and want to get a set-up appropriate for that.

Hi guys, could you consider doing a section on post shading? It is an aspect of weathering that I don't fully understand/have the nerve to try. It would be cool to see what colours, ratio's and techniques are needed, also where best to apply said things. Hope that makes sense. Lol.

How bout a section when you have time on debonding.
We have all at some point glued something in place, with either model glue or CA and then realise it was the wrong way, or something else had to be done first.
I'd like to hear what you guys use to go back without damaging parts or paint.

Before I post my question I'd like to thank all of you for providing significant guidance and expertise that has been invaluable for getting back into the hobby. I am still in the process of getting my man cave all set up so hope to share some projects soon. Ok, and now for my questions. Love to see a video with guidance for dealing with resin add ons and updates. I am considering purchasing some Legend Production (anyone with good or bad experience) and would like to avoid any pitfalls. Keep up the great posts and projects everyone! ...how about a tip on scribing just built my second airplane and the thought of attacking it with knifes and scribbing tool scares me

This may have been covered but never hurts to ask getting back in the hobby after a long time in the military and want to see how a dot filler wash is done using oils any help or demo video would be helpful

Paul's just started an afv build series on the ism YouTube channel. He said (so I'm sure it's gospel!) that he would be showing how to do a dot filter. Subscribe, and keep your eyes peeled!

If you're in a hurry, Google is your friend, and I'm pretty sure there's a thread/video of Paul doing one on here somewhere, it how I learned to do it!! Cheers Paul btw!

Hey all I am brand new to the forums. I have not done any modelling to speak of since my teenage years and now that I'm *cough* 56 *cough* I really have a desire to return. With all of the information that's available here it's really hard to know where to start from a "must have" tools of the trade perspective. So....my question would be, are there absolute must haves (I understand glue, paint, etc...lol) for folks like me?

Dan if you are building aircraft you can't beat Paul's build tutorials on the airfix 109. There is also an afv series that the ISM guys are working on, although I haven't gotten to those yet.

Thanks heel! I have been watching them and they're awesome. I'm just trying to get an idea of entry level tools. I know an airbrush and associated gear are important but I don't have a ton of cash to drop. I found a nice paash (sp?) combo, dual action brush with 1/3hp piston compressor with tank for about $180. I don't know if this is good or not.

It's really cool to have a place I can go to ask these kind of questions without getting my gonads stomped on!

I started with the same setup off amazon, although I opted for a single action airbrush first to cut my teeth. The bundle had a 1/8 hp pasche compressor, hose, and cleaning tools. I bought some revlon sanding sticks and decent brush/paints. You will steadily accumulate what you need over time. You need a decent pair of sprue cutters and exacto blades. Better sanders will produce a better finish. Tamiya extra thin is a must. Rattle can primer is fine to start with, but be cautious as they spray heavy and fast. Light coats and go past the edge of the plastic. Never stop in the middle. Have fun and you'll get the hang of it in no time.

That's a relief on the airbrush rig. My plan is to get the tamiya basic toolkit and whatever color callouts come with the kit I order. I'm going to get most of the Ultimate stuff I see in Paul's vids...washes, thinners, sanders, etc., i'm seriously considering the bench PE bender I saw in one of the videos. PE is something I've never worked with before so I'll need to do my homework on that.

One thing for sure, if I have any questions, this is the go to place!
