Chiefs Academy 1/48 F-22 Raptor

Got bored of weathering armour, and needed to build something. So started this beast!

I'll be doing it oob, as it'll be getting handed over to my nephew when it's done. Unless it turns out great, in which case, he'll get one of my other cast offs, lol!



Box full of plastic, looks very nice indeed!



Lots of sub assys done already. So far, only problem I've had is on the intakes, shock horror!



Bit of filling reqd here then! Other than that, fit has been perfect so far. Really enjoying it. Famous last words, eh?!

Ohhhh....a nice jet....too funny though, that you'll keep it if it turns out good, which you know it will! I'd be the same way and give my Nephew a cast off!

Little bit of work done on this.

Filled those intakes, not perfect, but close enough for now. Might work on them a bit more later.



And got the cockpit done. Some PE would be nice here as it's quite an open area, but gotta keep it oob, lol!





There are some nice mfd decals on there, but the camera didn't pick them up!

Nice start Chief! I like how the whole upper half of the plane is one part...no seams down the middle of the fuselage or at wing to fuselage joints.

So this is finally finished! Didn't get round to posting on the thread much, no surprise there then! Lol.

I did manage to take a few pics before it was finished though.

Primed up with alclad primer. It kept clogging my iwata airbrush, so I resorted to my old cheap one and it worked fine! Go figure!



Sprayed the base coat, then used card masks, mounted on white tac to raise them a bit. This should give a feathered edge rather than a hard edge.



Turned out ok




Hopefully, if you compare the two pics you can see that the colours 'change' depending on the light and angle. That's the main reason raptors look grey in some pics, to shiny silver in others. All depends on the viewing angle.

Started the decals, hoping they'll blend in a bit after some weathering!



And here she is finished

I used citadel paints, dawnstone grey mixed with iron breaker for the lighter colour. And the same grey mixed with lead belcher for the darker colour. Had to play around with the mix til I was happy with it. Also tested the mix with a Matt coat as well, the raptor looks 'shiny' but isn't gloss! HTH

Thats a great job mate!

Ill be starting mine soon for a local group build - one of the benefits of the kit is you can do it in flight without much problem, the way they design the landing gear and missile bay doors, which is rare these days.

And I'll nick that idea with the masks as well!
