From scratch to desert on 6 wheels

Hi Guys!

I'm entering this SIG with a pile of leftovers, scrapes and a plate of PE.
When I came along this SIG I thought I can go out and buy a model with 6 wheels or more,
but I can also have a look at the scrubs I've got laying around!

I promised myself if I would have 6 usable wheels, I would give it a shot.
Turned out I did! So I started scavenging through my plastic lumberyard to find parts that could
be used to build a 6 wheeled vehicle of war.

I truly hope that this way of building my vehicle is within the boundaries of this SIG!

I did see that scratch building is allowed, but this is not an officially existing vehicle...
So, Paul and Lee, if it is out of limits, I'll just move it over to the 'work in progress' area, and continue there.

Here is what I found:

The cabin is from an GMC truck. So I thought it should be an american vehicle.
I started with a bar and put the back part of a German halftrack and the GMC cabin on it.

I started building the front of the truck with PE plate material.

I put the steering wheel in and the covered windshield of a German Horsch.

Put on the fenders.

When I looked at what I had sofar, I thought the size of the back part was to small compared to the front.
So I took it of and built a back part from scratch.

I made the grill from a leftover photo etch part.

I attached the spring suspension!

Put on the back wheels. They are 'sand wheels' from an English vehicle, so it will have to be a 'desert truck'!

Put on some boxes and a tank.

The bumper.

Head lights and tow hooks.

Jerrycan and machine gun point.

Ply wood floor, exhaust, ax and back detailing.

The machine gun.

Shovel, door handles, Mirror and gun holder.

The crew. Two american soldiers in action. Crates scratch built from pine wood, an oil drum and a cable.

Next up is painting, weathering and a little dio!

I painted the primer coat panzer grey.

The unavoidable layer of hairspray.

And the final base color.

Stunning work Han, some great skills there and this beauty looks amazing.

You've taken a pile of scrap parts and spares and made it into a beautiful model - me on the other hand, I can take a beautiful model and make it look like a pile of scrap parts and spares!!

Absolutely!

Lots of dust, warn paint, a little rust, sand, mud, grease and other dirt.

I had to keep going back to look at your first few photos just to remind myself that this isn't a "proper" kit - awesome stuff. And dude, you own that hairspray technique - the chips and scratches are perfect.

That is some nice chips made by brush, right?!
Do you have have favorite brand of brushes for the fine work as chipping?

This is de hairspray method and the chips are made with tapping a tough brush or scratching with a knife.

Hi Guys,

I finished painting and weathering the truck and the soldiers.
When I was at the ESM in Nieuwegein yesterday I decided to buy some stowage to liven the build up.

I bought the Allied Vehicles Accessory Kit:

Selected what I could use (without over doing it!

) and painted and weathered it.

So behold "Hothead", the scrap build US Desert Army truck.
Next up is a desert diorama!

Hi Guys,

Next up, the diorama,

I wanted to make a circular dio. Never done circular before..
So I sawed a circel out of a piece of mdf.

From a piece of styrofoam I started sculpting a rock formation.

From fine sand, white glue and water I made a paste to cover the rock face with.

I covered the base with DAS klay.

And when I got to this stage I didn't like my rock at all.

So I tried to create a rock from tree bark.

I put it together on a piece of card board and painted it.

When a was finished I still thought it looked like bark!

Let's try something else.

I bought a piece of cellular concrete and started hacking away on it..

And I liked the result!

With 3 big plugs and screws I screwed it to the base and added some sloping klay.

This rocks!

Next up: Painting the dio.

Wow Han! The space that you have to display your work must be impressive. That piece is huge!
It's wonderful too. That foam version of the wall didn't look too bad, but the final version was far superior.
This is going to be a really cool dio.

As a matter of fact I don't have a lot of space.

Dio space is a problem. But actually it's not that big but it is high. Luckily I just got another glass cubbart so I'll be alright for a while.

You should start and do some tutorials for us regular folks...
Weathering vehicles should be the first! I think that is probably your Ultimate Forte'.....
Everything else is just the Usual Excellent top shelf finish.. lol...

I am beginning to wonder if Han Solo is just your alter ego Mr Jimenez Sir....

Hi Guys,

For sand and rocks I used the debris that came from hacking away in the rock.
I thought it was perfect for the job.

I put white glue over the surfaces where I wanted the sand and rocks to stick
and sprinkled the debris on it.
I like the result very much.

Next is painting!

That's a mighty good idea, Coen.

As a matter of fact, I was already thinking about a vulture or other kind of bird.
Or a lizard on the ground..
I'm gonna try and find some 1/35 scale animals.

Can't wait for it to get painted!!! I'm on wiffffey duty all weekend

. So no modelling! Still need my fix and I trust you fix it for me.
