Heller 1/72 SAAB 91 'Safir'

Post by LudvigN »

My 3-night project is finished. It took a total of 6 hours to complete. It was my first time doing natural metal finish. Im using brushes and im not quite pleased with the results. I will definetly try again, with a different approach.

I used the norwegian decals because I think they look awesome. Also, the opportunity to use the norwegian insignia comes quite rarely, so one should seize the opportunity. In the instructions, the plane is supposed to be yellow instead of metal, but I wanted to experiment.

A real dog of a kit. I did not expect anything else since the model came in a plastic bag only and the mold is from 1981. The fit was bad, but not quite as bad as one could expect. I only bought this kit cause I wanted to support the museum (Säve flygmuseum) and that was the only kit that they had then. And now I had a gap between builds so I decided to try a NMF. The decals where excellent except the carrier film wasnt cut close to the decals.

The canopy was horrible. It was thick, too large and had severe distortions. Im sure there are vac-form replacements out there. The interior lack details so I decided to add some seatbelts.

The kit has raised panel lines but I decided to sand them down and just make the hull as smooth as possible for my metal finish.

The Safir has a really strange stance when on the ground. It took some serious nose weight to keep it from being a tailsitter ;)

Not my kit

+ Fast, few parts
+ Good decals
+ Cheap

- Fit issues
- Lack of detail
- Raised panel lines
- Packaging
- Horrible canopy

Cool! What paint did you use to obtain the metal finish? I have tried to obtain similar results but I am never quite happy with them.

Cheers guys! :cheers2: I used citadels "Runeforged steel"(i think) and can be equaled to an aliminium finish. I did indeed use the haiy stick. First I made sure the surface was as smooth as a babys ass using fine grit sanders and then buffed it up using a buffer, then I painted 1 layer of gloss black(vallejos model color). Then I went on with really thin layers of the citadel paint. Keeping the paint thin and diluted is the key to a smooth finish.

This little bird is now in an in-flight pose cause of WEAK landing gear. Made the stand myself in 6-7 minutes.
