1/35 ICM Studebaker US6 "Deuce-and-a-half"

Post by alextheblue »

Initially I wasn't going to participate in this SiG as I've got a couple of builds on the go for the Vietnam GB, but I love the look of the old WW2 trucks and the temptation proved to be too great. After a bit of research looking at tons of old photos there were a few that caught my eye, but I kept coming back to the Stude. ICM is a new kit manufacturer for me, but this one gets some good write-ups and it's not too pricey, so before I could whistle the opening bars to Kelly's Heroes, I had hit the "Buy Now" button and the aforementioned kit was winging its way to me, or should that be, trucking it's way!

I won't cut and paste swathes of texts, but instead will post up some relevant details and specs along with some cool pics I found. So here's the technical bit............

Type - 2 1⁄2 ton Cargo truck
Place of origin - United States

Production history

Number built - 197,678 (+ 22,204 by Reo)

Specifications

Weight - 10,485 lb (4,756 kg)
Length - 265 in (670 cm)
Width - 88 in (220 cm)
Height - 88 in (220 cm)
Crew - 2
Engine - Hercules JXD, 320 cu in (5.2 L) I6, 86 hp (64 kW)
Suspension wheels, 6x4 and 6x6
Speed - 45 mph (72 km/h)

The kit itself, starting with the box art.

Instructions, including information and colour call-outs, which are Model Master.

Paint schemes and decal layouts.
Image

The decals, and I hear that these are the one thing that lets this kit down as they disintegrate at the very sight of water! :ooops: Time will tell, but I guess forewarned is forearmed.
Image

Theirs seven sprues in total including the clear plastic, starting with suspension parts etc.

And I thought I'd stick in a picture of some of the tools that I use. These aren't the only tools that I use, but these tend to be the staples that stay on my desk for pretty much the whole build. I know there has been some posts lately about peoples preferences for tools, or what is a good "starter set", well here's mine! :th:
Image

Looking forward to this one as I've never build a car/truck, although about a year ago I did build a Panzerspahwagen 234/4, and that's got tyres, so they're virtually the same!! :th:

Looking forward to seeing this one, I love that vehicle. Good luck with the decals... I hope they stay together!

Built this kit. Was my first kit, since starting this hobby again after some 25 years.

Is a very nice build, very nicely detailed. I have had no problems with the decals myself.
Only bad thing I found, was that the really small and thin parts are very hard to remove form the sprue without breaking. I guess the plastic is somewhat hard. Lost a doorhandle here and there.. :ooops:

Good luck with the build.

Update One

Now with all the formalities over I can lift the lid and crack on with the build. The detail all looks good, and checking the instructions there's nothing that looks too complicated. It's here that I must confess to making my first mistake (and it surely won't be my last!). The first step is to put the engine and gearbox together, so without further ado, I grab sprue A and start looking for parts 31 and 32, the two halves of the engine casing. It's then that I notice that the sprues themselves aren't numbered, no biggie, I think as everything looks quite easily identifiable. And anywho, I've had plenty of experience of putting 1/1 scale cars together, so how hard can a plastic model be! Now on full scale it's easy to tell the difference between a starter motor and an alternator, but not so much at 1:35. It was looking for parts 17, 18 and 19 that I realised that this wasn't going to be quite so easy. But then I spotted them, or so I thought, cut them from the sprue and cleaned them up, only to find that one of the parts was wrong. It was then that it suddenly dawned on me that there was a sprue-map on the first page and just maybe this was numbered. Sure enough, there is and it is - doh! Now I realised that I've actually cut piece number 15 from the sprue and this is air filter down pipe. No problems, now I've realised my mistake I'll set it to one side, and cut off the correct part. Now everything is going swimming well, until I come to attach the air filter and for the love of cod (other fish based products are available) I can't find it anywhere. Luckily it's not a problem as its only a small cylinder, so this can easily be replaced with a bit of sprue material.

Engine, gearbox and rad all assembled.
Image
Image

Wheels - need a final sanding down to get rid of the seam and then they're done.
Image
Image

Next is the main running gear under the truck as well as the suspension. The prop shafts, diffs and drive shafts are all moulded as a single part, which makes it easier to align everything, but it would have been nice if it had been split up into more individual parts. The instructions at first glance look quite straight forward, but when you're trying to read the instructions, refer to the sprue map, find the right part on the sprue and work out the orientation of how bits attach together - you know something is going to go wrong! There are three diffs (transfer boxes I think they're called now) on this thing and they are made up of three parts. The bottom half is moulded onto the prop shafts and the the top half is in two parts, just as the the real thing would be. There is the main housing and the cover plate - the main housing parts are all numbered 72, whereas the cover plates are numbered 73, 74 and 75. This should have been my first clue that all three covers were actually different. Between checking the instructions, sprue map and the sprue itself, I managed to cut off the wrong cover for the front transfer box. Dry fitting revealed that it didn't quite fit and this should have been my second clue that these parts are different - cheese and rice, some people never learn! :bash: I just assumed that it was a bad fit and got to sanding and whittling until it fitted - not perfect but it will do. It was when I came to attach one of the rear covers that I realised that I had used the wrong part for the front cover - oh, and have I mentioned - they're DIFFERENT! Deeply embarrassed, I fitted the rear two covers, which both fitted beautifully!

Image
Image

It's here that I must give a big thank you to peppie as he pointed out that the smaller parts on this kit are prone to breaking as the plastic is quite hard - and he's dead right, it is quite hard plastic compared to something like a Dragon kit. Unfortunately, I read his post after I had completed this part of the update, but even if I had know beforehand, I'm not sure there's a lot I could have done to prevent the breakages. The parts in question are the torsion bars, parts 80 for the rear suspension.

Image

Two parts snapped in half cutting them from the sprue and the third broke attaching it to the leaf springs. As I say, I'm not sure there's much I could have done to prevent it as they were attached via two sprue gates, one at each end. As you cut the first it applies a certain amount of torsion force to the part which is then released as you cut the sprue gate at the other end. This in combination with the hard plastic is enough to cause the part to break - either that or I'm just a club-fisted clumsy oaf and I'm inclined to think it's the later!

Thanks for taking a look and even bigger thanks for reaching the end of my prattling on, you would have thought I'd just made a scale model of the Houses of Parliament out of unicorn hair and fairy spit and not just glued a few bits of plastic together - thanks again! :th:

Update Two

Managed to get a fair bit of bench-time in over the weekend, so be warned, there's a deluge of pics and none of them are particularly interesting - bits of plastic, bits of plastic glued together, more bits of plastic....you get the picture (forgive the pun!). The next step of the build calls for the chassis to be put together and just like the real thing this involves joining two rails, crossmembers and suspension fittings. Whack on some various mounts for the engine, cab and deck and bingo, jobs a good 'un. Well, not quite, get the chassis out of line on the real thing and it throws the whole build off, to the point that the car will be undrivable. Don't get me wrong, I'm not going to the trouble of building a chassis jig, this is only a model after all, but making sure everything is square will hopefully avoid any potential problems later on in the build.

Image
Image

And with the tread plates, fuel tanks and various other gubbings fitted.
Image
Image

Next step is the deck.

Image

And here's where I hit the next round of breakages. Once the side gates are on, which come in two parts, the interior upright supports are fixed on as a separate part. After much consideration, I decided to fix the rails on first and then fix the supports on after, as I had a feeling that some of them would break.

Image

And I was right, out of 10 parts, half of them snapped in half as I removed them from the sprue. I tried all sorts to try and prevent this, close to the part, close to the sprue, even different sprue-cutters, but to little or no avail. Still, no real problem at the end of the day as they were easy enough to join back together and fix into position.

Image
Image

One bit of advice for anyone thats going to give this kit a go - I found it easier to attach the mud-guards first and then put the supports on after.

A quick dry-fit of everything assembled so far and its starting to look a bit like a flat-bed truck - without a cab!

Image

I thought I would quickly knock together the cab and then this would pretty much be it for this part of the build as there are now several parts that will need painting before further assembly. More breakages, this time the steering wheel, One of the spokes was already broken and two more snapped removing the darn thing. Again, nothing difficult to fix, just annoying when you would rather be pressing on with other things. The pedals were a little bit fiddly and the instructions aren't to clear, but it's fairly straight forward once you've got everything together.

Image
Image

Bench seat and shifters
Image

And a quick dry fit and we're done.
Image

I must say, I'm really enjoying putting this truck together and I'll definitely be investing in some more ICM kits. Next step is to prime everything and then get some painting done.

Thanks for taking a look! :th:

Update Three

Now it's time to get some paint down - yay!!! From the many different olive drabs that I have I decided to use one of the ones from Mr Hobby's Aqueous range, no: H078, but before I can get going on the exterior all of the frame, running gear and interior needs painting.

Here's the seat and shifters - before......
Image

And after, courtesy of leather brown, a light dry brushing of red leather, both Vallejo Model Colour and then a finish up with dark dirt from Ultimate. I love these washes as you can put them on as thick as you like and then keep cleaning them up until you get the level of finish that you want.
Image

The engine, a Hercules JXD in-line 6 cylinder...
Image

And the chassis and running gear, which I'll weather up properly once everything is assembled....
Image

Next up was the rear body and flat bed and this gave me a few head-scratching moments as I wasn't sure as to whether the bed itself was made from wood or from metal. After looking at what seemed like hundreds of photos, I decided that it should be made from wood (hey, it's my model! ). Certainly from a couple of other builds that I've seen, they have been depicted as being wooden in structure. I think that my decision was more influenced by the fact that I had found a bottle of chipping fluid that I don't even remember buying, and I was keen to give this a go!! I've always fancied having a go at the hairspray method of chipping, but as this is a relatively small area I thought I would go with the chipping fluid from Ammo by Mig.

First up was to paint the wood effects and for this I used a couple of colours from the wood effects set from Lifecolor. Usually I paint on the light colour first and then apply the darker colour with a heavy dry-brushing and then depending on the overall colour I'm after, I will add a third colour and maybe even a sepia wash. However, in this instance I'm only after the effect of wood underneath the peeled off paint, so I just opted for two colours. Not great, but it should hopefully be enough to give me the effect I'm after.

Image
Image
Image

Using tepid water and an old toothbrush and the chipping fluid came off remarkably easy. I applied two good coats of the fluid and waited until it was just tacky before setting to it. I'm guessing that the ease with which it came off was down to the fact that this was the heavy chipping fluid, but I wanted a heavily used look - lots of heavy equipment being dragged about as it's being loaded on and off.

Image

Onto the exhaust, which I decided to paint and then attach and I noticed that we may have a problem with exhaust fume flow, which would seriously tamper with the running ability of this thing! :bash:
Image

Easily rectified.
Image

And whilst all of that is drying, I decided to attach the fenders and doors to the cab.

Image

The obligatory dry-fit to get an idea of how it's all going and it's starting to look a bit like a truck!!
Image

Just need to weather up the dashboard and the front part of the cab, get some base colour down and I can start assembling this bad-boy!!

Thanks for taking a look! :th:

love the paint job on the seats and the flat bed.

This was a real treat to see tonight Alex, the seat looks killer and one for me to try, the flatbed worn look is just brilliant, you made the engine look great and thank god you spotted that exhaust problem or the whole project could have stalled

Thanks Frans, it's actually going slower than it appears as I'm spending way too much time at the workbench! Hang on, is there such a thing as too much time!

Good luck with the GMC flat bed, I almost did the same thing, but noticed at the very last moment, phew!

Update Four

Not a huge update this time, although the work that I managed to get done seemed to take an age to complete. You know what it's like, it's the fiddly little bits that need taking care of as you get near to the end of a build that always seem to take the longest. Ironically, for me anyway, it's at this stage that you just want to press on and get it finished - so close, yet soooo far! :wall:

Got the exhaust painted and rusted up. Used the same products and process as with the manifold - dark, rust, light rust and yellowish rust from VMC and ocre rust from Mig pigments. Started with the light rust, heavy dry brushing with dark rust, "spotted" some yellowish rust over the top and then semi-blended everything together with the pigments mixed with a bit of fixer. Tried to make it look a bit more "built-up" around places like joins etc. and darkened it up a bit around the tail-pipe. You can't really see too much once it's on the rolling chassis, but as the modelling mantra goes - I knows it's there!

Image

With the cab pretty much together now it was time to get the base coat on. As with the deck, I used olive drab from Mr Hobby's Aqueous range (H078). Looking at reference pics, my first thought was that this colour was a little too dark, but this is comparing it to restored vehicles and there's no real knowing how these colours compare to the original. For anyone that has done a bit of car spray-painting, you will know that there are a number of things that will affect the "look" of the final top coat and one of the major influences is the primer coat. That's pretty much why I went for black for the flat-bed, but went for grey with the cab. Also, once it is all weathered this will lighten the colour a smidgen. But I guess at 35th scale, it's all in the eye of the beholder!

Image

And one more dry-fit now the colour sort of matches.

Image

Now that this old Stude has lost it's junkyard-dog look with its primed doors and bonnet, sorry, hood, after all, it is a Studebaker, I'm really starting to see the finish line. Oh, and if anyone is wondering what that crazy modification is on the headlights, it's not some prototype, light refracting, stealth thingy-ma-who-jit, it's where I haven't taken the masking tape off of the lenses!!

Thanks for sticking with me on this post, as that really was a lot of old waffle for just three pictures!! :th:

Update Five

Managed to get a fair bit done on this one and everything has gone swimmingly well - until I got to the decals that is, but all will be revealed shortly. It's taking slightly longer than I had thought to get to this stage, but I put that down to not being familiar with trucks and I've been paranoid about double and triple checking the fit and alignment so that everything will fit together properly and there's no surprises later on. So far the extra time taken seems to have paid off as it all fits together quite snuggle. With hindsight I could have left the base coat on the cab until it was fully assembled, as I'm going to have to go over it again to touch up some areas, but it's only a 2 minute job with the AB.

Hate masking, but it's got to be done in order to show the frame on this one as the windscreen is the "pop-open" type.

Image

Assembled the cab, fitting the floor-pan and seats and manged to get the door windows in once pre-spraying them. Not a lot of the interior is going to be seen once this is sealed up, but I enjoyed painting and weathering it and thats the main thing I guess.

Image

And now onto the horror story - the DECALS!!!! :eeek: :eeek:

I had read in a couple of reviews that these things fell to pieces quicker than a twelve-year-old girl at a One Direction concert, but I have also been told that other people have had no problems with them. Unfortunately my experience was the former.

First decal.............
Image

Oh, well, keep calm and move onto the second one...........
Image

F@#*ing b*@#!!@rd things!! Whole get ripped to shreds in a moment of rage and it's time to delve into the spares box. I'm sure that I've got some generic US WW2 stars that are roughly the right size, they'll have to do I guess. It's a bit of a shame as the rest of the kit has been very good on the whole.

Next up was to think about how I want this thing weathered and I've decided to go the dirty dusty route, concentrating on a "layered" dirt look rather the chipped and stained look that gets applied to a lot of tanks. Products were fro the AK Interactive, Tamiya and Mr Hobby Aqueous ranges and the wash I used was dark dirt from Ultimate, my go-to product for a dirt wash.
Image

I would like to point out at this stage that the Tamiya and Mr Hobby paints were flawless, although I only mix most of my Aqueous paint to a 70:30 ratio as personally I find 50:50 a little too runny (I run a H&S Infinity as 22 to 24 psi). Both sprayed beautifully as they always do, however, the AK stuff, not so much. The dust colour seemed pretty good and this was mixed a 70:30 ratio (70% being the paint obviously! :eeek: ), but the dirt colour I just couldn't get right. It seemed to dry on the tip no matter what I did. Whatever I tried didn't seem to work, less thinner, more thinner, less pressure, more pressure. A shame really as it's a really nice colour, but hey-ho, we all know how finickity some acrylics can be. I was aiming to spray the lighter colours on first as this would represent the dryer dirt and then build up the colour to darker dirt to represent more recent dirt. Having said that, I wanted it all to look fairly dry as I wasn't going for a muddy look - something of a cross between sandy dirt and european dirt - ish!

Started with the cab and used that as a guide for the rest.
Image

And the flat-bed....
Image
Image

The deck was then attached to the chassis, but the cab is still only dry-fitted in place and I might leave it like this to reveal the chassis and running gear if needed.

Image

The wheels still need to be done, but apart from that I'm almost there with this one. The footplates will need some scuffing and the petrol tank will need some chips and stains, but for now I'm going to let everything dry thoroughly as some of the darker colours will lighten up a bit more as they dry.

I'd also like to take this opportunity to compliment everyone on their work so far for this SiG; I've been following everyones work and there's some fantastic builds going on, but unfortunately my time on the forum has been limited recently and I literally only get a chance to quickly dip in and out here and there - but to everyone taking part

Thanks Tiger, appreciate that! :th:

And you're right about the decals - you spend an age building and painting the thing and the decals can make or break the look of the model in some cases. It almost seems like some manufacturers look on these as an after-thought - might look to see if I can get some stencils for future builds.
