Airfix 1/72 Avro Lancaster B.II Bomber (My 5th Build)

Post by UKguyInUSA »

Hello Guys,

Below are photos and a link to my YouTube "Final Reveal" video for my build of the Airfix 1/72 Avro Lancaster B.II Bomber that has the 4 Bristol Hercules Radial engines instead of the standard Rolls Royce Merlin engines.

I'm just adding this to the Air Gallery section of the forum, as I never did after completing the build.

Hello Jermaine, thanks for looking :)

I'm okay, I think....just got my appointment to go back into the hospital for more intrusive tests on Tuesday October 15th, so until then, I have no idea what's going on with me. I thought they'd get me in sooner than that?!

Its the not knowing and the waiting that is frustrating :wall:

Hopefully, all is good, but something doesn't feel right within?

I have to start my 101st Airborne Paratrooper so that I can produce some build updates for that....I lost my Mojo after going to the Hospital for a few days and returning home. So, I switched off from everything for a couple of weeks and have just got ack to the Forum and YouTube today to try and catch up with what I've missed.

Hope you're well mate? :)

Cheers :cheers2:

That's a fantastic Lancaster you have there! I just got the Airfix dam buster kit put into the stash. Unfortunately I think it will be sometime before I can get to it.

I'm sorry to hear of your health issues. I hope it works out for you. In the meantime, I look forward to more great models!

Thanks mate...enjoy building your "Dambuster". If it's new tooling like this one was, then you're in for a treat. This was such a great build; pieces went together well and it looks a treat even before you apply the paint!

Enjoy her :) :thumb1:

Hi there Martin, I am building 3 lancasters at the moment two Blll's which are each at about the same stage, and one a Bll the same as yours, I just hope it turns out half as good, but as yet barely started. Out of the two Blll's one has had the fuselage glued together and the join sanded and filled in and sanded again, due to this I have lost a lot of surface details, mainly rivets. I have posted a question regarding replacing raised rivets and have had a couple of replies but would like to know if you lost some detail when building yours and how you overcame it. I take it you would have filled and sanded the joins.
Thanks in anticipation.
Hope things work out for you, good luck.

Hello Hamish...the methods I employ to limit removing details around joint areas, is to run tape either side of the joint so you leave a space just wider than the joint itself. I then apply the filler using a mixture of filler and alcohol to create a smooth paste. I then brush it on over the areas to be filled, using an old brush. When it is completely dry, I remove the tape, then using "Nail Polish Remover" I dip a cotton swab/Q-Tip into it to get the tip moist and then gently rub across the filler. This will smooth the filler away without the need for sanding....just be careful over the actual joint/seam area, because you don't want to remove some from the area that had a gap and take it back to that level. When you've removed the excess using this method, then take a fine sanding stick and just lightly smooth over the joint/seam areas. This prevents you from removing details that are close to the seams/joints.

Hope this helps?

Cheers :cheers2:

Hi Martin, I'm very new here, you're my first post actually. Your model looks fantastic, and thanks for the filling tip in an earlier post I'll be using that idea for sure.

I love the Lancaster and have very fond memories building an Airfix Dambuster version 40 years ago. I have this very kit in my stash, new back to the hobby so I'm waiting for a bit more equipment (AB for one) before I start it.

Ok, that said, the tooling looks great I have to say, and you said it went together well, was there any fit issues at all that you remember? This was a recent b'day present from a drinking mate so when I build it I want to do a top notch job so I can show him. I want to get the "Big Ed" kit for it when the funds free up a bit. Any advice would be appreciated re: the build, did you do a work in progress anywhere? Thanks in advance. :)
Cheers, Simon.

Hello Simon and :welcome: to the forum :)

Firstly, I'm honored that I'm your first post and I'm glad that you like the way my Lancaster turned out. I look at it now and think of all the things that I could have done that I didn't know back then. I hadn't discovered pre-shading, washes and filters when I made this, so now, I'm tempted to build another Lancaster and use the skills and knowledge that I have acquired since joining this forum.

I did a build progress report, but it isn't that detailed, as it was my first one posted on here and I was struggling with up-loading photos and getting frustrated. But here is the link to the build thread: http://intscalemodeller.com/viewtopic.p ... 5&start=20

Regarding the build, it was great, comparing it to the memories of when I built an old tooling Airfix Lancaster back in the early 70's. You will need to file a few surfaces to get some parts to fit together well;

1) When the cockpit assembly is fitted into one half of the fuselage, dry fit the opposite half to ensure that it closes together along the seams, all around. If it doesn't, like mine didn't, all I did was file the edges of the parts that were to be glued into the opposite fuselage half. File, dry-fit, file, dry-fit, until the fit is perfect.

2) When you fit the upper and lower wings around the internal struts that extend through the fuselage, you'll find that again, the wings will not close all the way together at the seams, so, repeat the process outlined above by filing the tops of the wing strut ribs until the wings close together nicely, then glue them.

3) Above each of the engine nacelles on the upper wing are some covers that drop into place...the fits of these were a little dubious, but again, with some patience and careful filing, dry-fitting, filing and dry-fitting, you can get them to fit nicely.

They are the only three areas that I remember I had to pay attention to, the rest was Golden :)

Good luck with your build and enjoy building her....I really loved building mine, and if you have any further questions, don't hesitate to ask :)

Cheers :cheers2:

Wonderful info, thanks a lot Martin. I will let you know when I start the build, maybe I'll do a WIP here too for that one? :) Keep up the good work!
