Invasion stripe sizes.

Hi guys thought this might help with invasion stripe if you plan to paint them.

Single engine fighters.

Real thing. 18 inch, 46cm

In
1:72 - 6.39mm
1:48 - 9.58mm ( I normal use 10mm tamiya tape)
1:32 - 14.38mm

Double engine/ 4 engine transport

Real thing. 24 inch, 61cm

In
1:72 - 8.47mm
1:48 - 12.7mm
1:32 - 19mm

And remember 4 engine Bombers didn't have invasion stripes

Hi Tom I believe they had 24inch stripes so that would make it in the twin engine category for them.

Hi guys i picked this up from WHSmiths today for £7 great mag.


Its got some great photos of aircraft with invasion stripes that i thought i would share with you.
Im sure most of us have seen this one of the ground grew painting the stripes on a spitfire.



But what about this one. Its from about a month after d-day when just the undersides were painted with the stripes notice the uneven pattern not only on the wing leading edge but also the stripes them selves.


And this one of a typhoon with the stripes not straight.

and this one notice the wear and tear on the leading edge.


Thats it for now im now of to have a proper read but i hope you found these shot either interesting or useful.

Thanks Nigel. This is great info. My son and I are both building P-51s we received for Xmas and we've been trying to address painting these stripes. This will be a great help. I take it that you lay down white first and paint over with black to form the correct sized stripes??

That's right mate. You could do the White then mask it to paint the camo or do the camo then paint the stripes on top if you do it that way you can 'damage/wear' the stripes and the camo will show through.

They are glider tugs norm or transports not bombers.

That's what the Stirling was mainly used for during D-day.

Stripes were applied to fighters, photo-reconnaissance aircraft, troop carriers, twin-engined medium and light bombers, and some special duty aircraft, but were not painted on four-engined heavy bombers of the U.S. Eighth Air Force or RAF Bomber Command, as there was little chance of mistaken identity — few such bombers existed in the Luftwaffe. The order affected all aircraft of the Allied Expeditionary Air Force, the Air Defence of Great Britain, gliders, and support aircraft such as Coastal Command air-sea rescue aircraft whose duties might entail their overflying Allied anti-aircraft defenses. To stop aircraft being compromised when based at forward bases in France, D-Day stripes were ordered removed a month after from the upper surfaces of airplanes, and completely removed by the end of 1944.

You know, if you don't paint stripes straight, even and with a clean edge, people will be sure to point it out. Regardless of the fact, as you demonstrated, those would not be historically accurate.
