REVELL 1:24 MINI COOPER 998 MK1

So my project for this is my all time fav road car the MINI. I have been in love with this my whole life. Not really sure why i have waited this long to build one tbh.











The Mini is a small economy car made by the British Motor Corporation (BMC) and its successors from 1959 until 2000. The original is considered a British icon of the 1960s. Its space-saving front-wheel drive layout – allowing 80 per cent of the area of the car's floorpan to be used for passengers and luggage – influenced a generation of car makers. The vehicle is in some ways considered the British equivalent of its German contemporary the Volkswagen Beetle, which enjoyed similar popularity in North America. In 1999 the Mini was voted the second most influential car of the 20th century, behind the Ford Model T.

This distinctive two-door car was designed for BMC by Sir Alec Issigonis. It was manufactured at the Longbridge and Cowley plants in England, the Victoria Park / Zetland British Motor Corporation (Australia) factory in Sydney, Australia, and later also in Spain (Authi), Belgium, Chile, Italy (Innocenti), Malta, Portugal, South Africa, Uruguay, Venezuela and Yugoslavia. The Mini Mark I had three major UK updates – the Mark II, the Clubman and the Mark III. Within these was a series of variations, including an estate car, a pick-up truck, a van and the Mini Moke – a jeep-like buggy. The Mini Cooper and Cooper "S" were sportier versions that were successful as rally cars, winning the Monte Carlo Rally four times from 1964 through to 1967, although in 1966 the Mini was disqualified after the finish, along with six other British entrants, which included the first four cars to finish, under a questionable ruling that the cars had used an illegal combination of headlamps and spotlights.

On introduction in August 1959 the Mini was marketed under the Austin and Morris names, as the Austin Seven and Morris Mini-Minor. The Austin Seven was renamed to Austin Mini in January 1962 and Mini became a marque in its own right in 1969. In 1980 it once again became the Austin Mini and in 1988 the Rover Mini.

So my first update:

I gave all the kit a good looking over and as per with the old revell kits there is flash and fit problems, Nothing to hard to fix tbh and i like to do it as others have said in the past if it was easy everyone would do it.

So i cut all the engine parts out and set about doing the dry fit and sanding and flash removal. Then put all the parts in gray ak primer.


After the primer had set it was all about the fun. This part is one of my fav bits of any build and thats putting some color on the parts. The revell callouts are next to useless. I have no idea where on earth they think the A-Series engine is still colored, as any real fan knows that all A-Series engine are dark olive green. So my paints are what i have picked my self as in this case i know the engine well (I used to work on them )

Then it was on to some glue up work. The fun i had with this lol most of it was fine but i am sure revell must think we are all hobbets or something. Even with tweezers it was a job to get 2 parts in place. Then just when i thought i was winning one of the small buggers came off, So there i am for 10 mins looking in the carpet for it thinking the carpet monster had eaten it and then i spotted it stuck to my poxy thumb. I really did pmsl lol so anyway here is the engine all done.

So its update time.

Not done as much as I would have liked but the Mrs is unwell and I have spent more time at the hospital then god knows what.

So what have I been doing I hear you ask. Well I had one small issue once I started painting the body the color I wanted to go with was just not working out at all and my god that paint ran like a son of a gun. So I have gone with a very dark blue. I am amazed at how much better it looks on the car, I think with the white roof it will look awesome. One other thing that was of my own doing, After building and painting the engine I had it sitting there all ready and I picked it up to move it and I dropped the bloody thing so all the little bits I spent like 3 hours putting on it are now off of it again lol. Oh well you learn as you go and every model you do you learn something and I have learned never move something lol


I dont know how well it shows here but you can see all the areas I have had to sand due to the runs in the pant. I did the sanding with Alclad Micromesh Polishing Cloths. (I got these after having 1 run on my P34 and spoke with Yoder aka Paul and he said they where the best thing to get) I did the sanding wet in warm water with a little bit of soap as this is the best way to do it. O learnt that from working 2 years in a body shop so there you go first bit of advise I can give you for sanding.




I used Vallejo Premium 62.011 Dark Blue for the body as the new color. This was put on with an airbrush after thinning. I have no idea what it was ratio wise as I tend to do it by eye. But as most say you want it to be like milk. So if its like water its a little to thin.


As you can see the body has come out really well. So pleased with how it came out. All that is needed is the clear coat over the top. 2-3 coats should do it. It seems to suit the car shap awesome

Ohh...this is starting to look exactly like my first car when I turned 18- the Mini Cooper that I lovingly doted on and took lots of care of. Will she have two white stripes, wide alloy wheels with low profile tires, arched wheel fairings to help cover the spaced out wide tires and 4 big halogen lights on the front grill?!

Ohh...this is starting to look exactly like my first car when I turned 18- the Mini Cooper that I lovingly doted on and took lots of care of. It might have the white strip. But no alloy wheels as it it did not come with any in the kit steal wheels with chrome hub caps is all I have.

Thats the MINI all done now. Took way more time then i had hoped for but real life got in the way. Could not be more happy with how she came out

Just want to add a thanks to Chris&AlexModelling for a new idea for clear coats. Its Astonish wood floor polish. Its so much better the Johnsons Future and its only like £1 a bottle
