1/48 Revell F-15E

Post by azsam »

Hi everyone,
So this is my first post here, have been reading for a while but finally decided to join. This is the first model I have built in about 15 years and I'm pretty pleased with the way it came out. I tried a lot of new things (for me anyway :th: ) on this build like weathering, filling and sanding seams (crazy, it never occurred to me before that I should be doing that!) dry brushing, airbrushing and the list goes on and on. There are definitely a lot of areas to improve in, but I had fun and finished it! Anyway, here are some pictures although their not that great as they were taken with my cell phone. Enjoy!

So I guess I didn't get all the pictures in with the first post, so here are some more!

You made a revell kit look pretty good! Did it go together ok?

Thanks Lighthouse! Surprisingly, I've only ever built kits from Revell, so it was pretty standard for me (as far as I can remember anyway : ). There were some fit issues, mainly where where the cockpit sections joins the rest of the fuselage and in the intakes, you can see a pretty decent gap in one of the photos. Other than that, the fit was actually pretty good. There are some other areas to watch out for, mainly towards the rear where the upper and lower halves come together. That seam needed a lot of work and it came out pretty good. I know some others here have built this kit and it was pretty good out of the box, but mine was absolutely covered in flash. I don't know if I got one that got past QC, but it was a lot of work to clean it up. One word of caution if you decide to build this kit, leave the front landing gear and doors OFF until you are done painting etc. and ready for final assembly. I followed the instructions and attached it very early on in the build and managed to break it off completely about 3 times :wall: . It's holding up OK for now, but it does have a pretty long piece of a sewing needle running down the middle if the strut for extra support. I still have attach the front landing lights as I wanted to wait a little to see how it would hold up.

That's great detailing, the louvered intake just behind the cockpit looks like photo etch? If it's not, that a fantastic job. :thumb1:

Thanks CJ! :D That's actually just the molded in plastic detail from the kit! The detail on this kit is pretty good, the whole build was done completely out of the box. That particular vent was painted with Testor's square bottle Metallic Silver and then washed pretty heavily with Mig's Dark wash. I"m pretty happy with how it came out since I've never used washes.

:thumb2: Thanks Patrick! I'll have to post one or two more photos as I did a little more weathering on the APU exhaust and the air-to-air refueling door as well as finished the front landing gear. You're at a pretty good place in the build now, most of the really finicky parts are on. I can't wait to see your build progress, I know you will enjoy the rest of it!
