1:35 AFV Club Tiger 1 (latest-model)

Here's my entry

It's the same as Chief's so that would be fun!
Do I have plans for this Tiger?

Nope, I will see where this build will take me.
I DO now that this will be my first attempt on applying zimmerit

And I will replace the rubber tracks, and maybe, a nice PE set to go with it....

That is a cool schene on the box
I used it for my big tiger
But lets see what you are going to do with it
I see photo etch in you future
Don't resist the shiny metal ,you know you want to use it (imagine that line with a scary voice in the back of your head

O I will order some shiny metal for it Mark, for that's kinda my thing.
Can't resist it! As for the scary voice in the back of my head, i do not have to imagine that for those voices are always present in my head

What are your thoughts on the zimmerit? I'm toying with the idea of the AFV Club rollers.

Nope.... did not found you hidden cam....

The zimmerit will be my first too, thinking of using putty and I have this great set of trumpeter

Don't no about those AFV rollers I'm afraid.

I've used those tools many many times Frans... they take a bit of practice to get used to.
I would suggest a trial run on some card styrene first before you try it on the kitty.
Remember... there's always Atak. haha.

This should be an interesting build to watch just for the lessons on PE.

I had a look on ATAK s website, couldn't see any suitable for this kit. Don't know if any of the other stuff could be adapted? But then, that would be cheating, lol! I'm almost certain I'll be using the rollers Frans, wink wink.

You can modify the Atak sets to fit other kits either with a bit of putty work or careful trimming.
The same goes for PE sets. I modify them all the time to fit kits they're weren't intended to all the time.

Time for me to jump in this build

I'm still waiting for the PE set to arrive from Down under, but I can start at the suspension and wheels, for those do not have PE on them.
The Friul tracks I'm ordering next payday.
The exact plans for this kitty cat are still unknown for I always get my idea's during the build.
I do have something in mind though... I hope Coen will enjoy it!

Here's the box with all crispy sprue's in it.
It's a two tone tank this Tiger
They replaced some old sprue's with newer moulded parts.

All the extra goodies with the kit

The sprues

Step 1 and 2

The torsion bars are flexible so the wheels can move up and down.

This spring is for tighten the tracks
Bit fiddly to put together, good luck with those Chief

And that's how far I get today.
Next update will be all about wheels...

Wheels.... I hate wheels..... there a lot of them!

But all wheels are cleaned up and sanded, glued them together, and put them onto the workable suspension...

Finally the Eduard photo etch arrived for this build, so I can continue now.
It's slow progress, but at least it is progress.

First a start on the 2 front hatches.
The instructions were a bit confusing for the hinge of hatch no 2 is pictured the wrong way.
Luckily I spotted it in time, so no worries here.

The hatches are workable.

Filled up the holes that are meant for the tools with putty.

To prevent the putty going out the other side, I put some masking tape over the holes.

Photo etch grills added

Time to start at the rear of the hull with the exhaust pipes.
After cutting of some moulded parts, it was time to take out the putty again.

This flat piece of PE will be bent into a nice and shiny exhaust cover.

Im using a cylinder pliers for that task. I came across this pliers at a modelling convention, loved it ever since.

I checked the fit by putting the PE piece over the original part.

And here's the result

Compared with the thick original part.

And here's both together.

And that's all I got time for now guys.
Working with photo etch to long will kill your eyes, and it's family time now

Looks awesome Frans. I don't know if it says in the instructions, but I think that those small tabs are meant to be folded back under the shroud to mimic the mounting lugs and 1mm pieces of styrene rod added to simulate the bolts.

The small tabs are meant to be folded back up over the shroud according to the instructions... folded over, the bold will appear on the right place...

So great eye, and thanks for spotting that!
Got some CA residue now, but that will be covered up with the zimmeritt.

A quick update this time:
First, I tried to apply zimmeritt for he first time in my life.
I used milliput at the left side, and I had a leftover magic sculpt that I used at the right side.
Like Coen said in his vid on zimmeritt, it does not have to be perfect for the real zimm was far from perfect.
The yellow milliputt is a bit thick, but I think I will continue to use it for it works nice and easy.
I'm still learning, and thanks to my friends on faceboob I have a lot more tips on this zimmeritt. Thanks guys

I added PE front fenders, and dry fitted the slightly warped upper hull.

Here it is next to my DAK tiger 1.
Spotted a error on the DAK tiger, the periscopes on the hatches are pointing the wrong way

More PE to bend this weekend, and maybe applying some more zimm...

You're right about the zimmerit, only the factory applied stuff tended to be neater, not perfect, just neater.

Um.. since you're noticing things about your DAK kitty... That's a cool mantlet.

I agree with you Coen,
Now that I see it all dried up, the magic sculpt looks better

I do have some left so that might be just enough for this build. Besides it's drying out so I have to use it before it gets thrown away.

I guess this tiger was build in the factory on a rainy Monday morning by a mechanic that just heard they were out of Bratwurst for lunch

Hi Guys!
Some more progress on the Tiger

The turret was missing a weld line on top, so I added a photo etch weld line from Aber.

Then it was time to start the zimmeritt.
I first wanted to apply the zimm from yellow milliput, but Coen recommended to use white milliput or magic sculpt instead, for those are a lot finer. So I took his advise and used magic sculpt.

It is hard to apply it, but I think I did a good job. Added some battle damage to the zimm as well.
At first I applied zimm on the visor block, but lord Coen spotted that too and said those were zimm free... thank heaven for that!

The turret is up next!

Meanwhile betweenn drying time, I made a start at painting the background for this tiger.
I want it to put it in front of a german factory.
This building is from plaster, and I will give it a go at painting it in oils.
It's in base colours now.

And that's all I got time for now guys!

That zim looks spot on as they say Frans. You really got the hang of it now. It's a bit funny... you can actually see you getting better at it as you go around the tank if you know where you started. That's awesome.
The pattern looks well done.
I love that factory wall... that's going to be a huge dio if that's for a factory ... WOW!
