How to make supplies under tarpaulin

Post by Glen »

I often do quite a bit of scratch building for my dioramas etc, for which I always try to keep the cost down and using what I have got around the house or in my shed. I am lucky that I am in the construction trade, my trade is a carpenter but I have now progressed to become a building surveyor.
I would like to show you an idea that I have used, and passed onto various other modellers.

I use dowel, polystyrene insulation sheet and good old toilet paper.

You then need to get some supplies, I have used 1/72 scale oil drums and boxes/crates

You then need to cut the shapes out of the polystyrene to match the crates

and the same with the oil drums using the dowel
Image
Then you need to arrange them to how you want them

You then need to do a 50/50 mix of the PVA with water

Then separate the sheets from the toilet roll

take a sheet and dip it into the PVA mix

With the soaked paper lay it over your supplies
Image
Image
using a stick dip it into the glue and let it drip onto the paper and shape it to your crates drums

You can add small bits of paper at a time to get the effect that you require

You then need to leave them to dry for at least 24hrs

Then you can paint them

Cut them to shape

Finished item

And used in back of the truck

1/35 scale used as supplies covered in tarpaulin

You dont have to make your supplies if you have enough spares of oil drums, cratesetc you can just put the paper over these., but i feel if you cant see them it is a waste
