Another method I found on YouTube (I forget who, prob one of the guys on here!) was to hand paint it with a very thinned paint, similar to a wash. As the paint is thin, it stays inside the hub boundary perfectly. Depending on the weathering you'll be doing, it might take a couple of coats. But I've found it quicker than securing the wheel behind the circular template. Only 'cos if its not perfectly central, it looks 'all to cock'. That said, personally, I think you can get away with imperfect road wheels as most of the time we cover them in mud/dust/general crap! Lol

Thanks for the video clip. Always good to see other ways of doing things. And the Olfa circle cutter is an excellent tool. I use it for my paper modeling and it was worth the extra cost as it was very accurate at cutting and did not slip once.

True that. I can't count the number of lackluster wheels I've just covered with mud to avoid painting it over again. Until now nobody knew my "dirty" little secret.

There is no perfect ways to paint road wheels guys!

There are as many ways as we can imagine it ! We all have our peeves !!! me the never ending of painting those Darn Road Wheels... so a quick and effective way was on my list.... I heard of it ! tried it and fell in love with it...

That other video you guys are referring to with thinned out paint and all...was cool but the DUDE in question was only dealing with two Tires! Since he mostly do Half-tracks ! IIRC
so... painting by hand was a logical and sound method for him and his followers !

Perfect road wheels are only seen on AFV from factory ! so if your Tank is depicting a Clean vehicle right off the factory floor? then you need a way to make it look that way ! and maybe the Stencils isn't the best way...?

it would apply to a BRAND NEW wheel as well !!

Maybe you should look into laser cut Foam or Tape multi-wheels templates...??? expensive but much appreciated by their users.. and sometimes reusable ??

Those that served ! (Army) know that the 2nd line Maintainers or Re-finishers... don't always take the time to Mask vehicles as they may be under time constraint to paint them into a new scheme ! NATO to Desert colors or U.N. scheme and so on...

I'll even go as far as saying ... Parade scheme for those liking that sort of thing.... like Soviets or Chinese do during their big display parades... although they seem Perfect ! they are far from it !

I find (me, myself and I) and others find the Disc template to be quick and realistic
as I often used in real life! ... things like wooden disk with a cupboard handle screwed onto them... or even Trash-bin lids as templates... IF we felt the need to cover the rubber.... Axle grease,Vaseline or even GOJO HAND CLEANER spread over the sidewalls !

and a quick wipe and Voila...... out the door the Tank or Trucks... a little over-spray can go a long way to represent the real deal !

Its all in the eye of the beholder !!!

Circle templates is defo the easiest way to paint road wheels, get the right size, mask of the others and airbrush through the hole
