Airfix 1/24 Hawker Typhoon Mk.IB

Post by JediBoer »

So, I finally got my Typhoon just after New Years. It took Airfix a bit of time to get these big birds out to South Africa. Ordered mine in September last year and the order only arrived in late December but it was a nice gift from myself to myself for the new year.

I was going to leave it for later this year but after visiting our local hobby shop and seeing the progress of a fellow modeler I was inspired to start.

So here goes...

I started the build following steps 1 - 8. Here are all the bits cut off, cleaned up and painted.

Yes, I also build the engine! :eeek: But I just couldn't help myself. So steps 39 to 48 was also ticked off as done!

And here are the other parts put together.

My initial thoughts... This bird is huge! I'm not a big Airfix fan. Have struggled too much in the past with kits that needed lot of cleaning up and not fitting together properly. This kit is a massive improvement. I have had to clean up quite a bit of flash on my kit. Other guys seem to have had less of an issue to I guess it depends on the kit you get. However, the fit on this kit is amazing. No complaints there so I'm enjoying this one so far.

Got some time in with the kit over the weekend. I'm enjoying the kit but also a little frustrated. The parts on the sprues with most of the cockpit and engine details have an unacceptable amount of flash for a kit of this price. The build would have gone much quicker if I didn't have to spend so much time cleaning up all the little parts. It is also disappointing to see ejector pin marks in some areas that are difficult to reach but visible.

That is enough bitching. On with the build. So, I kind of finished off most of the cockpit.

Applying the decals was a real pain. I lightly weathered the cockpit with some wash and light dry brushing. I chipped the seat on the edges but I still have to weather the leather a little and add the seat belts. There is also an ejector pin mark that I'll cover up on the head rest with a little scratch building.

After the cockpit was done, I fixed the engine to the airframe and started adding all the bit and bops. There is still a lot to do but here you can see the progress. So far, I'm quite happy with the way it is turning out.

I'll be cleaning up some parts, prime and paint them this week and add them over the weekend but I would like to have the engine all done this week.

Thank you for the kind comments Jim! I can definitely recommend the kit! I see some great AM parts also becoming available so you can even jazz it up a bit more! :cheers2:
