Ki-45 Kai Koh Toryu 'Nick' (1/48th Hasegawa)

Post by pmarshall »

Started today - Ki-45 'Nick' from Hasegawa - this is a limited edition boxing with a special scheme

Image

Lots of nice details in the cockpit for OOB, as is normal for Hasegawa

Image

Laid down a base coat of Gunze Khaki thinned with Mr Levelling Thinners by 50% so that it sprays in very thin layers.

Image

Image

Picked out the details on the control column, using Vallejo Model colours, and a light oil wash

Image

Picked out the base details in the cockpit, once again with Vallejo Model colour

Image

Image

Drybrushed the Instrument panel with white, then a black oil wash. Then used some Ammo Crystal Colour in the instruments, and pick out some of the switches. Followed by a light brown oil wash to start dirtying the whole cockpit.

Image

Image

Same procedure on the Radio, with the Liferaft painted Olive Drab, and the spare cannon magazine Gunmetal.

Image

Finally picked out the details on the fuselage sides and gave a brown oil wash.

Very nice paint work on the interior. I've never seen this plane before, it looks pretty nice!

Nice paint work so far. Question, do you put the oil wash right on the paint or do you clear first?

Cheers Sean

Today's work - first completed the weathering in the cockpit - added some chipping with a Prismacolor pencil, some dirt with pigments, and some fuel stains around the filler cap.

Image

Then joined the fuselage together - given that this is the fuselage halves, the cockpit, 2 insets and the bulkheads it required some 'help' to stay in place while the glue was drying.

Image

Then on to assembling the nose section.

Image

The gunner's position

Image

Being an inset on a Hasegawa kit, it needed some Mr Surfacer to blend the nose in.

Image

Build up the Nacelles - again insets abound, which makes this slightly tougher than normal.

Image

Rubbed back the Mr Surfacer with a cotton bud moistened with IPA

Image

Weathered down the Nacelle interiours with 'Engine Grime' and 'Engine Oil'

Image

Fitted the wings - was left with a small gap, which was filled with Vallejo Plastic putty.

Image

Finally fit the tailplanes and rudder mass balances, and run some Mr Surfacer 1000 along the upper wing roots.

With Gunze paints, I normally just put the oil wash over the top, especially if thinned with Mr Levelling Thinner as they are pretty tough.

Today's work - started with the Engines. First a coat of Alclad Steel, drybrushed with Metalcote Aluminium mixed with Raw Umber oil, Copper and silver on the ignition harness, and Neutral Grey on the crank case. Finally a wash of Mig Engine Grease

Image

Then made up the cowlings, sprayed the inside with the Khaki interior colour and fitted the engines

Image

Image

Masked the canopies with Parafilm and fitted using GS-Hypo cement

Image

Masked off the gunner's position with Blu-tac

Image

Finally - chose a scheme, i'll be doing this one

do you do your detail painting with an optivisor on?

Yes - detail painting is Optivisor with a 10/0 brush time. I try and break up the detail painting into shorter sessions so you can have a break as well.

Today - Paint

First, Alclad grey Primer over the top of everything - a couple of touch ups with Mr Surfacer, but nothing major.

Image

Preshading with thinned Black

Image

Sprayed the Grey Green XF76

Image

Finally spots - XF13 Green

Image

Well that was a fun relaxing 2 hours of green spots

Today - First a coat of Klear over the top of the cammo

Image

While that was drying, made up all the parts for the Props and Undercarriage and Painted them.

Image

Then the decals. Typical Hasegawa decals, thick, and quite brittle. Set down reasonably well with Mr Softner and Mr Setter, but did need to use some DACO Medium setting solution on the Hinoramu to get them to settle properly. Then another coat of Klear over the top to draw them down and protect them ready for weathering tomorrow.

Did a bit more today - first assembled the undercarraige

Image

Then an oil wash - Mig Neutral Wash over everything, with some Mig Dark Wash over the control surfaces for some variation

Image

Image

Wiped the wash back with a little white spirit on a tissue

Image

Finally sprayed a matt coat over the top, after fitting the Guns
