Tarangus 1/48 JA37 Viggen

Just got the first of my Viggen kits, started doing some test fitting. So far it looks like a good kit with some nice details.

One downside on the kit is the seam on the head rest, it would have been nice if the cushion was a separate part.

Test fitted, everything fits nicely.


Did a quick test fit of the fuselage, fit is really nice but the parts brake down is a bit odd and could have been made with fewer seams. But I guess they designed it this way to have smaller and cheaper tooling and make it easier to do other versions like the two-seater.

The plan is to do a pretty simple model with not many extras.

Agree, they could have solved the seat and neckrest in a better way.
Annoying to have to fix it.

Got some paint on the cockpit.




A bit of detail painting, the color for the head rest is a bit off, I think it should have a bit more blue in it.






Also added some dark dirt wash.





It's overall a nice kit, but it would be good with a bit more precise location on some of the parts. Like the instrument panel only has a small hole in the floor in the cockpit and a really small part to get the right angle. There is also some other parts that are really hard to get in the right place, but that's a later problem.

This is going a bit slower then what I would have wanted, been a lot of stuff to do at work. But it's starting to look like a Viggen. I had some fit problems that needed a bit of filler and sanding, I think most of that was because of me. Still a needs a bit of clean up, I hope to get some primer and paint on during the weekend.

Finally got some more done on the Viggen. Started with some AK primer followed by some bad preshading, really need to work on that and finished with a two tones of gray. Not sure how correct the colors are, the light one is what is called for in the instructions and the dark is a shade lighter then the call out. I think both are a bit too dark and maybe the dark should have a drop of blue. But according to a website the color I used for the light part is supposed to be used for the dark part and an even lighter for the light part, but I don't think that's right either. So I think I'll keep this and maybe add some bleaching and panel fading to lighten it a bit.

So I changed my mind. After looking at some more reference pictures I decided to repaint the plane in lighter colors. So started from the beginning with new primer and preshading. I decided to mix the grey instead of using the closest I had. The light grey is about 20 drops Vallejo Model Air white and 3 drops 71.050 Light grey. This was impossible to spray as the pigments kept separating from the thinner so I made a new mix using Tamiya white and Sky Grey to get pretty much the same shade. The dark grey is about 40 drops 71.050 and one drop 71.087 Dark Sea Blue. I think it came out better.

Got the landing gear build, a lot of small parts but looks good ones done and should take a wash well.





Also found some left over weapons from my Vietnam GB Academy F4 Phantom. Two Rb71 (AIM-7E) and four Rb74 (AIM-9L).



All the decals are on, they where pretty good really thin, didn't rip. Only problem I found is that it is bit hard to get them to conform to the panel lines, at least with Micro Sol. Might work better with a stronger decal solution. But over all the decals are really good and easy to work with.







With a bit of luck I hope to get some clear on it during the weekend so I can start weathering.

Looks really nice!!
I Think the color looks good.
Our Swedish colors are hard since there are no "definitive" paint references.
Also real planes, especially the Viggens were in service a lot and got faded and worn.
So they look different in different Pictures, light conditions, degree of fade etc.
Leaves a lot of room for artistic license and Your choice looks very right to me.
Damn! It looks Mighty with the decals on...

It's getting close now! Have added some weathering to the plane, mostly streaks using MIG starship filth oil paint and some pigments on the underside. Only have a few more parts to add and weather the landing gear and bays. Would be nice to get it done during weekend.

I wanted to have this dine last weekend but it needed pylons for the weapons. I thought I had some fitting in the parts box, but no luck. So I cut some stripes of 1 mm styrene sheet, glued them together and shaped into something that is close to the pylons. They are not 100% accurate but will do for this build, for next one I will try to find or make some better ones.







And as I need more then one and all should look the same. I made a mold of the pylon and cast more in resin, just needs a bit of paint.
