Always liked the idea of doing a Sunderland but they're just so BIG! . . . . I'm off to look for a 1/144 one.

Good luck with her.

instructions are A4 ,10 page booklet and are clearly printed and well laid out, the decals are printed by Cartograf and look superb, perfectly in register and nice and glossy.there is a lot of glazing to this kit so decided to go with Eduard mask,s ( these do not come with the kit)

The kit supplied photo-etch mainly cockpit components .This look,s a really nice kit with no flash and very nice detail. There are already after market item,s available but there is enough plastic for a nice busy cockpit and with door,s moulded seperately plenty of scpoe for diorama,s. As mentioned the decal sheet is superb and a colour history booklet supplied with the kit is a nice touch. Looking forward to making a start on this shortly :cheers2:

Yes this is quite a new kit from Italeri. In the many online reviews of it, the PE often gets a bit slated for being very basic, and as you say, its mainly cockpit bits which aren't seen when the thing is built as the windshield is quite small on this.

However this is a kit I desperately want to get in the future. The town I live in, Oban, was a Sunderland base during the war. In fact, I think at least 2 of the decal schemes provided in this kit are for 210 Sqn based in Oban. Which is partly why I want it.

I will follow this build with interest. If your thinking of doing it in one of the 210 Sqn schemes and you want any more info on their time in Oban etc, let me know and I will see what I can do as I have been doing my own research as well.

Thank,s Gav, I will get back to you with a particular squadron decision, I am actually building this for my father-in-law :eeek: but will try and persuade him to go for one of the Oban scheme,s. I am also trying to coax him into letting me put it in a diorama but the only photo,s I have seen with the particular layout I like are of Sunderland,s based at Milford Haven : :cheers2:

Here are some pics of Sunderlands at RAF Oban, as it was.

Undergoing maintenance. That is possibly aircraft DA-J, you can see the camo pattern these early Sunderlands carried.
http://www.secretscotland.org.uk/index. ... ndCrew.jpg

DA-G on convoy patrol, note the paint wear along the water line. While its evident, I can't imagine it was left like that for very long due to the possibly onset of corrosion on the bare metal.

Another of DA-G

Also RAF Oban based Sunderlands of 210 Sqn moored up

Hope they help in some way

Thank,s for those Gav, probably will be an Oban based Sunderland,DAG of 210 squadron in 1941. I am going to have a trawl online to see if I can find some of the servicing cradle that attach to the drop down flap,s on the leading edge. It,s either that or have it sat in a water effect with the crew being ferried out to their aircraft, any way cheer,s for the pic,s and happy modelling.

OK, managed to make a start on the kit this evening.Main cockpit and access to lower deck built up, also the bomb/depth charge bay. I have left the bomb bay in two section,s to ease painting and weathering. These part,s will be sprayed RAF interior green (xtracrylics) and the various part,s picked out in various colour,s ( photo,s will follow)

finaly managed to get some more done on this build now I have finished the Seiran build. Cockpit and sides of fuselage primed with Vallejo polyeurethane white, followed by Xtracrylix RAF interior green. Then a wash of black enamel after all the detail,s were picked out, and finaly a dry brushing of highly lightened interior green and silver to pop the details out.Next job is to mask all the glazing , assemble the AA turret,s and fit it all inside and button it up. Apologies if the photo,s are not to good, but had to use my mobile this time :cheers2: Dave.

Managed to get a bit more done on the build, all interior in place and buttoned up in the fuselage. A fair bit of sanding in was needed on the fuselage and the wing,s , the latter havig hole,s to big for the mating pin,s resulting in a lot of free movement while glueing. Dry run of the wing,s to fuselage again the fit is not great so out with the sanding stick,s again. As I first thought this is a very large beast so I,m glad I havn,t got to find storage space for it : :th: :cheers2: Dave

Excellent work so far. It will be a beast of a kit when complete.

I have been to Southampton Hall of Aviation (now called Solent Sky Museum,) and have had a walkthrough of the Short Sandringham that is on display there. Very impressive aircraft.

Nice model of a really big aircraft...I was asked to stand next to the white one in Hendon museum some years ago for a tourist who wanted to take a photo showing the size of it in proportion....So I was a living 'scale ruler'
