SBD-6 Dauntless "Ace of Spades" Hasegawa 1/72

Post by elscorpio »

Here are pics of the last model i ve built

Nice model from Hasegawa...only problem is the integration of the dive brakes in the wings fuselage. But with some work and time, i managed to invent some credibles dive brakes...
I ve added some stuff in the rear gun (like the gun belt...its a bit out of scale but i think the effect counts...) and some line brakes.

Did some painting in the base, and i m still looking for some stickers to use as a stencil to paint SBD-6 or Dauntless on the left side of the USN star...

looks great, bud! love the base. what technique did you use for the chipping? brushed on after, or some sort of chipping medium/hairspray?

Cheers! :cheers2:

Thanks mate! I ve brushed on after. I still think that in this scale i get the best effect with a very fine brush with flat aluminium and lots of pacience...i try to do some ramdom brush along side the panels where i think is rational to have some chipping (the sides...near the fuselage...some small bits here and there). After that i normally pass a little bit of light or dark (depends on the plane and place) "dust" , to try to blend it a bit better...

In this case i think i may have exagerated a bit in some places (on top of the wings and near the engine)...but i think it "passes"...serves as another lesson for next plane.

Thanks mate

Cracking job mate, I thought that because of how well painted and detailed she is, that she was a 1/48 scale model. :) :thumb1: :thumb1:

I'm building a F$U-1A Corsair in the same 3 color camo scheme; If you don't mind me asking, what brand of paints did you use for the upper "Sea Blue", the "Intermediate Blue" and the "Intermediate White" and what were their reference numbers for the three shades?

Cheers :cheers2:

Thank you very much !

I used

- Upper color Tamiya XF-17 (Sea Blue)+XF-2 (Flat white), just a few drops of white in the dark blue.

-Intermediate Tamiya XF-18 (Medium Blue) , out of the bottle

-Intermediate White is Tamyia XF-2 (Flat White), with some pre shade

After the painting of the blues i used a bit of the same color but added a bit more white (as to be very subtle) to highlight a bit on the center of the panels and some top surfaces. I did this for the two blues.
After that i passed a diluted mix of XF-19 (Smoke) + a drop or two of XF-69 (Nato Black) and passed, very lightly on the panel lines, jus to enhaced a bit the contrast.
I seal it all in the very ending with AK Ultra Matte varnish...just a personnal choice i tend to like the ultra mate finish.

Hope that helps with some ideias...sorry for not knowing the exact quantities for the mixtures, but im just not very methodic on the ratios...i kinda do it by eye...and sometimes it fails, and i have to mix it up again.

Any question, just fire it!!!

Truly fine work. Especially for a model in that scale. I start to lose my patience in anything much smaller than 1/48. The weathering is just right. Someday I'd love to tackle a dive bomber like the Dauntless or Helldiver. I was friends with a tail gunner from a Helldiver squadron who was in my R/C club back in the states. He was a pretty good pilot for his age (92 at the time)Very brave men they were.

Thanks for sharing your paint colors mate, greatly appreciated. The Tamiya Corsair paint guide that I'm working on calls out for their spray can colors- AS09 etc and I couldn't find any conversions for AS spray can colors, so this is a great help! :)
