Tiger 1 Initial prod. s.Pz.Abt 502 tactical number 100

Post by MarkVerploeg »

hi guys
and this will be my 3rd entry for this gb
i have to admit that the Tiger bug has stricken me (very badly too)
this build will go along side the number 3 Tiger from the same unit and i will keep both Tigers in the same building step during the construction part of the build
this is done because the 2 are identical for the most part and that keeps everything a bit easier for me while i am building
although the sanding of more then 100 wheels was a bit of overkill

so for this i will use my second dragon #6600 Tiger
i decided to get 2 of them as i have been looking for a kit of this Tiger for a very long time and since i don't use e-bay and those kind of sites it has taken a few years
but i finally found them and so the building can begin

this is the kit

the instructions , painting and markings sheet and the photo etch

Image
the version for this build
i won't follow the painting instructions though and i will be painting it in grey only
i plan to use a modulation set for it but that needs to be ordered first
but i don't have any Panzer grey left so i need to get some paint anyway
and that would make this Tiger the very first grey tank in my collection
i already have a large amount of build kits but all of them are either in dark yellow with or without camo colors or in winter colors
so it is time for a early piece

Image
here is a photo of the real Tiger "100"
i think this is after it was captured by the Soviets but here it doesn't feature the winter wash like in the instructions
and i haven't found any photo's of this vehicle with that winter wash so i'm not sure if it ever had that applied
but i'm no expert (or even a bit knowledgeable) on the subject so i could be wrong

but that is the plan for this one
thanks for watching and untill next time
cheers Mark

Yes, you certainly got bit by the Tiger bug! It's not a bad thing at all. Enjoy the build.

Thanks mate i didn't mean it was a bad thing though
But i actuall want to start the remaining 2 Tigers in my stash aswell
So the bug certainly strikes hard but a total of 6 builds is too much as i am running of of space to put them down when i work on one of the other builds

Glad to see another "100" being built.I will be interested to see your take on it. :th: As for the white wash camo,I have done a bit of research on the tank for my 100 build and have found only one confirmed photo of 100 in white wash.

Image

I have posted some more pics of 100 in Russian captivity and a short account of how 100 came to be captured by the Russians in my build thread if your interested.

hi guys
time for a little update for this Tiger
the hull is done and the work has moved to the turret
for the biggest part this will be the same as my other initial tiger and on the hull the difference is very little
the only things that are different are the fenders (don't have them on the other build) and the lack of the plate for the inertial starter

but a picture says more then words
so here is the progres so far

Image
i sanded the edges of the tyres to make them look a bit worn down
then with the hobby knife i hacked out chuncks from the tyre to simulate pieces of rubber that are torn of by stones and other debris that was caught between the track and tyre

Image
all the wheels so far
the only thing missing is the 3rd wheel on each set

Image
the torsion bars where installed

Image
on the sides there are these small tabs that you can use to lock the swing arms
i wanted to have them working so i removed those tabs

Image
the swing arms where installed and the lower hull was set aside to give the glue time to fully dry

Image
the rear plate was put on and the tabs for the inertial starter where cut off
according to the instructions this vehicle lacks that feature so i followed that and removed them

Image
the exhausts where constructed
i will add them after painting
this way i can get to them easier and after painting i will only have to glue them in place and add some pigments

Image
with a scribing tool i carved some lines in the jack block
this is to replicate some woodgrain
but i guess i need some practice

Image
all the other parts where added to finish the rear plate

Image
then work started on the cooling units
i used tamiya red brown (fueltanks)
mr hobby aqueous black (radiators)
mr metal brass (fan core)

Image
then i painted all the parts with tamiya light grey
the fans where painted with mr metal stainless steel and the radiators where dry brushed with vallejo gunmetal grey

Image
the side plates had smooth edges
but these plates where torch cut in the factory so to replicate that i used the corse sander from Ultimate and dragged that from the outside inwards
this leaves small carvings on the plate
i am sorry for the quality of the photo though it makes it very hard to see but i don't have studio lighting and have to work with 2 smaller lights
these mess up the camera though as it gets mad every now and then

Image
cooling units placed

Image
the front plate and engine hatch where made next
i like the horse shoe , it is a nice little detail that was present on the real vehicle

Image
the front plate and engine hatch where glued onto the hull plate

Image
the cooling fan covers where assembled

Image
then the upper hull plate was placed
i was watching a video by Forbes Hutton where he mentiones that the instructions where wrong
and he is right after i had glued in the upper glacis earlier i found out that the upper hull doesn't fit in there if that plate is there
but luckily the glue was still soft so after a new drop of TET it was easy to remove it and place the upper plate in it's position before i re installed the upper glacis plate
i also replaced the kit wire with copper ones as these are easier to get in the right shape
and the grills where placed aswell

Image
the spare track holders where placed
but they didn't include spare track links so i will use some leftovers from my Carius Tiger
they are not the correct type but the side that shows that the best is the side that will be against the hull

Image
and finally i removed the glacis again
i didn't see that the plate i used lacks hinges for the fenders so that had to be replaced
and then the fenders where shaped and glued on
i did some damage to them but when i took this photo the glue was still setting and i would have ripped them off the hull

and that is all i have for now
i still need to do a little bit of work on the turret and then i will upload those phot's and make a new update
thanks for watching and untill next time
cheers Mark

Re: Tiger 1 Initial prod. s.Pz.Abt 502 tactical number 100

Post by MarkVerploeg »

hi guys
so after about 2 weeks i think i have enough for a new update
although i thought i did make one already :ooops: guess i planned to do so but forgot all about it

anyway i finished the building stages and already started with the painting so i will post the building of the turret and base painting now and keep the weathering for next time as i need to start on that

so here is the build so far
Image
the guns for both this build and the #3 Tiger
the kit provides you with a sprue that has casting numbers on the back wich you can shave off and glue on the mantlet
the right gun is for this build and is different from the regulat one as this has a small sunscreen just above the gunners sights
i think i added the numbers on this one and the regular mantlet had the numbers molded on already

Image
a better view of the finished gun

Image
i then glued the 2 halves of the turret together
this was a first for me as my other Tigers had a single piece turret
but the seam only needed a bit of sanding
i did paint the interior and the cupola interior
this was done with cremeweiss by ammo
the results where below my expectations although i read about the problems they can give you i decided to try them anyway
but next time i will use vallejo it tipdries to but i get better results with those
it is unclear to me if this is due to the paint or me but i think i will stick to what i know and what works for me next time

Image
the smoke launchers and loaders hatch where placed
nearly done at this point
although i did some minor detailing in the end

Image
the turretbins where added
these are the main features of this entire build really as this Tiger was the only one i know off that had these bins

Image
how it looks on the hull

Image
i then drilled small holes in the backs of the smoke launchers and glued in some copper wire
this photo is on the turret of the other tiger but after this was taken i carefully removed the launchers to make it easier to work on them

Image
i then drilled a small hole just behind the bracket of the smoke launchers
this will be the place where the wire goes into the turret

Image
i hope you can see but i bended the wires toward the turretside first

Image
then the top and middle wires where bend upwards and cut off at the edge of the turretroof

Image
then the lower wire was bend in the same direction and the end was placed in the hole in the roof

Image
then i dropped a bit of ca glue on the turrets edge and on the hole and pulled the wire down to get it to sit right
\and that is how i added a small bit of detail on this turret
i know that a pe set would have been more detailed but sometimes it is more fun to make something yourself

Image
i also added wires for the headlights
this photo again is of the other tiger
the number 100 has both the headlights in place but the wire part is the same and that was what i wanted to show

Image
i then used ammo pirmer grey on both the tigers and left that to dry for a day
it dries faster but i didn't have time so it had to wait
the basecolor is vallejo german grey from the modelair range

Image
i then added white to the grey paint to make a faded/bleached tone of the base color
this was sprayed on all the horizontal surfaces and a bit on the higher parts of the sides
i did make sure not to get paint in the panellines
this way i get a faded look on the panels and a darker tone in the weldseams

and that is about where i am at right now
i started some detailpainting on the tools and other small bits but i haven't finished them and i still need to upload those photo's
so i hope you like it so far
thanks for watching and untill next time
cheers Mark

i had some problems with painting them though
i can't seem to get used to the ammo paints i ordered for this
and after 2 wasted afternoons trying to make them work i lost all intrest in building for a few days
but i am ready to get back to the Tigers i have on the go now and finished them as soon as i can
i am still planning to make all 4 major production version during this sig and i have 2 versions on the go and 2 next to the bench waiting for me to start building them

Thanks Nige
They are pretty much the same though so building wise i just had to do everything twice
The big difference will be in the finish but the white wash failed so i need to clean and repaint the other one once my paints arrive

I love the look of the elephant tiger. :) those bins on the sides always strike me.
Nice work on plumbing those launchers too. That's always a huge pain, you made it look straight forward. :th:

It actually was pretty easy but i would have prefered lead wire as that is a bit softer and easier to cut
I just didn't have the right size
But this was a Tiger that i wanted to build for a long time and when i found the kit i just went ahead and got 2 of them at once
So i can build a normal initial and this one

Time to bother you with a mini update
I was cleaning up the bench and airbrushes today and while shaking the bottle of Ultimate airbrush cleaner i spilled some
Ofcourse the drop didn't just land on the bench but it crashed right onto the Tiger i was building
Image
But i was not 100% happy with the painting and weathering so i am not to angry and consider it as a small but stupid mistake
I will clean the tank and repaint it as soon as possible ao i can get it done in time and along side the other Tigers that are on the go at the moment
So i hope to get back to this as soon as i can

Yes and let that be a lesson to all of you
I don't plan on doing it again :
But it is beinv cleaned now and by dumb luck i found 2 bottles of german grey in my vallejo box
Although it is modelcolor i managed to get it thinned well enough to spray and it didn't even clog the ab
So i hope to get it primed tomorrow if it is dry and start over

Well the good thong is that i am happy with the wheels and they are fully painted and ready for more weathering
Those are the things i like the least
And as i build German armor the most i have a abundance of wheels with those darn tyres
Why couldn't they use steel wheels from day 1 and save modellers that problem

Lol.... Feel for you Mark...such a shame with the cleaner accident.. :?
On a plus the modelling community has now invented a new term for the Oxford dictionary...
Last week the hype was around the new craze/word " Unboxing"..
Next week It'll be the word "Jermaine" used by modeller to describe the violent un-gluing of a kit or parts of!! Lol....
Awesome!! Sorry Jermaine..... Lol... We love ya buddy!.. :bash: :bash: :thumb1:
Good luck with the repaint Mark, these Tiger's just keep getting better and better!...
Well done so far buddy, continued success! :thumb1:

Thanks guys
Well it is a dragon kit so i don't have to tell you there is a pricetag on them and i refuse to put it aside
But if it needs to be done , so be it
I can't use another kit on my shelf of doom as there are 3 on it already and besides that i managed to complete every build i entered in a gb to this point and i like to keep it that way
The grey is a harder color to remove though
I thought it would take a day but it will take a bit longer as it isn't soft enough to remove yet
But i am in the middle of painting some other builds so i have enough to keep me going untill this one is clean and ready for some new paint

hi guys
well you may have seen it already but among all the Tigers i finished for this sig this one was missing
after the cleaner booboo i didn't have enough time to completely clean it and then repaint the hull and turret
so it seems there is a first for me and that is to be late with a finish for a group build
but on the other hand i did finish 4 others in time and i think that is a nice way to honor (Lord) Coen , king of the Tiger 1
but i will get back to this Kitty soon when i have some more builds to prime and paint
wich should be in the next 2 weeks or so as i am clearing my shelf of doom in between group builds
but i still want to thank every one who took the time to have a look at this build and to those who sent out the kind comments
see ya soon
cheers Mark

You did enough.

Thanks for the kind words
She is all cleaned up at the moment and not a single speck of paint is left on it
I did knock off a few parts bit nothing serious that can't be fixed
I am about to restart my valentine archer and once that is ready for some primer and paint i will do both of them at the same time
Should save me aome cleaning and mess on the bench
But i hope to finish most of my shelf queens including that hobby boss Tiger before i start the Homeland gb
So i can finally do my mom and the kids photo with all my tigers
