Revell Arado Ar 196A-3 seaplane

Hello guys!
Taking a break from all AFV I normally do, and decided to enter with this plane.
Now, I am not a plane modeller, so way out off my comfort zone here

But I think i'm going to enjoy this build

I'm using AM Photo etch, this time the coloured PE from revel that is designed for this kit.
I know that the canopy for this kit sucks big time because of the big join taps being very prominent in sight of the glass.
I haven't found a replacement canopy for it just yet, but I know I will find one during this build.

Some history...

The Ar 196 was a shipboard reconnaissance aircraft built by the German firm Arado starting in 1936. The next year it was selected as the winner of a design contest, and became the standard aircraft of the Kriegsmarine throughout World War II.

The Arado Ar 196 was the best float-plane of the Second World War. It flew attacks against U-Boats as well as Coastal Reconnaissance Missions and the there-with associated attacks on small inshore vessels. Most aircraft of the Ar 196A-3 Series went to Coastal Aviation Groups as well as to various Maritime Reconnaissance Groups and larger ships.

This is the base that came with the kit.
I do not now if i'm using it. It would be awesome to put this plane into water, but that is something I'm not deciding now.

So this is my entry, and I will try to do this model justice.

As for the canopy, I just ordered a resin replacement by Alley cats models.
Not familiar with them, but will see if it comes across the pound or not.

Hi gentleman!
First update of this build.

Lets start with the pilot seat.
The part that came with the kit is nice, but what was Mr Revell thinking when moulding those big lumps of plastic that supposed to be the seatbelts...

Thank God I have a PE set that will replace them.
It's a PE set that has coloured PE from Revell. but it is made in cZECH REPUBLIC, so properly Aber.
Anyway, Lets cut away those horrible seatbelts.
I did this with my scalpel, and it was a tough job to do.
But I manage to get most out, and sanded it down with a regular piece of sandpaper that I had rolled up.

A eight piece PE belt folded.

The original seat has a leather "cushion" in it, so I decided to make one out of plastic card and some putty.

Belts added and the seat painted. I forgot to paint the leather pieces, but I correct that later on.

Time to get cracking at the navigator radio's and stuff.
Also a PE upgrade, so I need to remove sand down all moulded levers...

And all smooth like a baby's bum... well...I think for I do not have children...

And here it is with all PE added.
I think it looks pretty awesome.

Seat painted in the proper colours

And The same was done with the navigators seat.
Removed those plastic seatbelts as well, and replaced them by PE

This was a 2 day's work for me!
Mainly because i'm not used by painting parts first, then add PE.... I normally add PE and paint all when it's done.

But slow progress is also progress, so I'm still a happy builder! lol

Thanks guys!

A small update, but that's mainly because this instrument panel you are going to see took me whole afternoon to build!

Loads of small parts, but no paint required for this is coloured photo etch, so that's nice.
Needed to sand down all moulded details like I did with the radio panels in previous update, so no pic of that....
Instead of using CA glue, I used Kristal klear to glue to etch this time. It gave me a lot more time to get the parts in the correct place.
Also, I used the same Kristal klear to make the glasses in the gauges by applying a drop on top of it.

This kit is readily available in the UK, if you're still looking for one. Cheap too! If I remember, Hamilkar built the 1/72 kit, this is the 1/32.

Right.... some more progress done...
I managed to put the cockpit between the frame.
Now that was fiddly!
Anyways, still not used in painting parts first before assembling, but that's how you build a plane I guess..
So detail painting was done, still got to do some weathering at the interior...

Now the frame is drying, I will go to the next step, and that will be the engine I think.

Hello again!
And thank you for all nice coments and support

This time I want to show you the finished interior.
And The BMW engine is also finished.
A few dark washes and a grey filter was added, and some chipping applied. That's it basicly.
I added a canvas tarp over the insrtument panel too.
I had a gap above the instrument panel, this way the gap is less vissable.
I have seen ref pics that had that tarp over it to protect the electronics from the salty sea water.
I dry fitted the whole thing first too see if the fusselage would close when the tarp was added.
I used a very thin paper tissue, so it was no problem at all.
Arbrushed the tissue canvas colour, and when it was almost dry, aplied it over the instrument panel.
No diluted wood glue was used, I just let it dry as it is.
I know the tarp will be barly vissable when the fuselage is closed, but if you look in the cockpit you still see a part of it witch is cool.

I still can not close the fuselage, for I'm waiting on a repacement gun barrel that will be placed on the side of the cockpit frame.

Meanwhile I started constructing the BMW 132K 9-cylinder radial engine.

This engine is a model itself!
Very cool details here.
All cleaned up and ready for primer.

Primed black,

Airbrushed Vallejo steel,

And detail painted the parts.
Many differend colours here!
And Revell instrucktions are very unclear witch colour should be were...

Now a hard task to upgrate the airintake or the outlets, correct me if I'm wrong here.
They were closed, si I drilled them open...

Put some scrap mesh behind it, and put a piece of plastic card with a hole drilled out over it.

Cut away all excess and sanded it down in the correct shape.
Not 100% dead center, but good enough!
And they look like shower heads now...

Dry fitted them in place.

Next problem were the closed exhausts.
As they are oval, it would be very difficult to drill them open.
I have seen AM part for it, but I wanted to try if I could work something out myself.

As a PE addict, I always have some empty (almst empty) frets laying around.

I cut off a small strip of PE.

And glued it around the closed exhausts.
If you paint the inside black, those exhausts appear to be open now.

And here they are all painted on the engine.

The engine recieved a black wash, and some oil stains from AK.
I'm calling this one finished.

I think the engine is sweet looking...
I might add some electrical wires as well, but I didn't found a propper picture of the electicals yet..

Incredible work on the engine Frans, looks great, very realistic.

Can you tell something more about how you made the tarp please?
Do you use wood glue to form it?
Do you form it first, than take it off again to paint it?
I was thinking about using it in the past, but was not sure how.

Thanks, and yes I can!
I have two methods to make these.
The easy way, and the more advanced way... lol
This tarp was made the easy way.
I simply took a piece of paper tissue and cut it in the shape I needed.
Lay it down on a piece of kitchen towel, and simply began to paint it in canvas colour with Vallejo acrylic.
By brushing the colour on carefully without ripping the paper, it starts to wrinkle.
I turned it over and painted the other side.
Let it almost dry over a toothpick. And with the paint still a tiny bit wet, I draped it over the console.
Now I just let the paint fully dry. That's it!

The hard way, and my most used way,
Again a piece of paper tissue, but know I started with putting a piece of cling film over the model where the tarp must be to protect the model.
The piece of paper I place on top of the cling film and I start to put diluted wood glue on top of the paper until it starts to fold naturally over the model. Extra folds can be made by putting a toothpick under the paper and pressing down the paper on the toothpick. Removing the toothpick carefully will create a fold. When the paper dried up, You can remove the paper from the cling foil, and airbrush it in the colour you want.

This last way is the longest, but the better one.

I thought you put the tarp on, drenched in wood glue, and painted it after drying.
I just could not figure out how to do the masking.

Hey Frans, it looks like we're at the same stage..we both have the cockpit and engine assemblies completed. I'm taking a break today and will beging assembling the fuselage tomorrow.

Those PE details bring so much more to the cockpit interior and your scratch-built tarp over the top of the instrument panel is a great touch to hide the gap, which I have on mine that I noticed when I dry-fitted the two halves together. Your engine looks awesome, looks like you used metal paints; I can't because I work at the dining table. Love your scratch-built shower heads to simulate the filters!

I hope we don't encounter any fuselage and wing assembly issues...it's been a great build so far with everything going together well, except for the disorganized assembly instructions.

Indeed we are at the same stage.
However I need to wait on a replacement barrel to arrive before I can close the fuselage.
I thinking of starting the floats soon.

The engine is not painted in metal paints like Alclad.
I used dark steel pigment from AK and brushed it on the aluminium painted engine.
Works for me!

I agree on the great build, I love this model, even when the instructions are confusing...
