Indeed we are at the same stage.
However I need to wait on a replacement barrel to arrive before I can close the fuselage.
I thinking of starting the floats soon.

The engine is not painted in metal paints like Alclad.
I used dark steel pigment from AK and brushed it on the aluminium painted engine.
Works for me!

I agree on the great build, I love this model, even when the instructions are confusing...

I might have to dry that steel pigment from AK, it looks like real steel paint!

Hello again!

While i'm still waiting on the replacement barrels and getting annoyed with it, I can't close the fuselage until the darn barrels are here, so I decided to just go on with the wings and the floats.

The tail stabilizer glued and taped together for drying.
The moulded ehmm "lever for the flaps?" are replaced by a piece of copper wire to add a bit more realism.
I do not have a exterior PE set for it, because those were to expensive, and I didn't think this kit needed it for the details are excellent with the exception of some parts.

Main wings

One wing in the locked position and one wing folded,

I have chosen for the right wing to be folded.

The cables on top of the nose for tying the plane to the dock (I think) are well.... poor.

So that's a very easy fix if needed, simply twisted two wires together,

cut of the end piece of the moulded one, and glued it in place.
The shaft was made by dropping some wood glue on it.

The floats needed a contra weight of ca 30 grams because this is a tail sitter and otherwise the model would tip over.
I was thinking of adding lead, but I took air clay instead.

And closed up the floats and taped them for drying.

Now all is drying and waiting for sanding soon.

I was thinking how to display this plane.
Would a use the original stand that's provided in the kit?
Nope.
I was toying with the idea of putting it on a transport trolley that would be pushed into the water, until I came across this kit

Now how awesome is that!
It's a catapult used on the Tirpitz and the Bismarck
Great kit, need to scratch build some parts, but I think I can manage that...

Also I received the replacement canopy.

I'm working on closing the fuselage, and I must say, hardest job ever done!
Ended up with a few Tiny gaps, but nothing too serious.

I had the same problem, running out of lead.... This is a very good and cheap alternative

Looking good Frans! I got mine primed tonight and will pre-shade her tomorrow. I still have to work on an idea for a display, but I have until the end of the year, so, something will come up, I'm sure.

I packed putty at the front of both of my floats, and always use putty when weight needs to be added. Those floats felt quite heavy and solid once they were buttoned up.

That catapult is an awesome addition!

And were back!
This is going to be a short one, mainly to show of the shiny new MG barrels....

Because Photo bucket is getting harder and harder to get my pics uploaded without:

page can not be opened
A whole Sh*t load of adds
and constantly crashing
So less pics than your used of me guys...
Getting pretty tired of photo bucket....

well.... let's continue.
New replacement barrels arrived, and sweet looking!

So this barrel is going to be replaced for a shiny new one.

Owh yeah,,,,

And the same was done with the MG in the cockpit

I started to build up the floats, with a little help from the stand that comes with the kit.
That makes it more easy to build.
All rigging will be done after the painting is done.

And before you know it, All is primed.
The main things that is.

The big problem I have during this build, is to ask myself, should I paint or should I build first.
One time I build things first and cant get it paint for I cant reach it,
And one other time I really should of build it first....
Very confusing!

So I have to think what my next step will be.
Still got some wires to add in the compartment where the engine will be, but that has to be painted too.
I can't add the engine to the plane, this must be constructed later after the plane has his main colours.
See what I mean? Thinking and thinking!

Hope to see you soon with a new update, if that darn photo bucket will work with me that is,...

The primer I used is the same as I always use, Vallejo surface primer.
This is the white, I also got black, dark grey, dark yellow and olive drab.
For me this primer works great, as long as you wash all parts with soapy dishwater before priming.
Some people like Vallejo some don't, but I'm sticking to this brand

Hate photo bucket, looking for something else, but there isn't any.....
As for the catapult, that is going to be a big and tough build!
But awesome......

Hello everybody!

A lot has happened this week, so let's go!

The plastic steps to climb up the plane, kept breaking off!
Very annoying, and after gluing them 3 times, they had to go!

So I replaced them by a piece of wire.
A very simple but effective fix!

Then it was time to begin the masking job...

I painted the underside of the wings and fuselage first with RLM 65
This plane will be painted in the camo scheme of bordfliegergruppe 196 on board of Battleship Tirpiz, So no yellow wing tips needed.

The paints from AK are tremendous!

The bottom cowling of the engine is painted in golden yellow from Vallejo

Now I accidentally Started to paint with the wrong RLM colour.
Let me explain myself.
As usual I paint the main colour first, then the camouflage.
I had to start with RLM 72, but I took RLM 73 witch is the camouflage colour.
As I am partly colour blind, and these two colours looks the same too me, I spotted my mistake to late.
Not to be worried, It just means that I have to mask a bit more....

And after a long airbrush session...

And here she is, painted in base colours.

Now you properly noticed the two tapes that hold down the plane....
Well... Remember I used Air clay for contra weight in the floats?
Hmm.... yeah... 30 grams in each float, but when the clay dries.... jup, less water, clay lighter, plane tips on here tail.
Now she is going to be placed on a catapult, so I probably can fix the plane to it.

But if someone has a solution, I'm open for advice!

The edges of the cockpit needs to be painted in the correct colour, this is where the masking tape used to be.

She received a gloss varnish, ready to take on the decals.

Then.... disaster! Well small one, but wasn't happy with it...
All parts were dry fitted, so was the engine, but the engine was kinda stuck.
So I broke of the part were the engine is placed on.
I had to re-glue it.... A bit of touching up will be needed as well..

I love how the floats look!

And to top it off, The engine.

I see you have a lot off room left in the part, just behind the engine. Can't you put some led in there? Maybe some small balls, used for fishing.

That's definably a great option

I wanted to build it with those hatches opened, but if I can't find another solution I will fill it with lead as needed and close the hatches.
Engine cowlings are open anyway.

The Catapult is going to be a real challenge, for I have to pay really good attention to the launch sled.
There is going to stand a full 1:32 heavy plane on top of it, and it's hold on just 3 points

Right now I struggling with the decals, for some how the gloss varnish I used did not gave me a smooth surface...
But It will all be ok..... I think.

Just thought about an other idea for your tail sitting problem.
When on the catapult on a ship, with heavy winds / storm, I think the tied the plane down with ropes to prevent it from being blown away.
I guess the plane / kit will have some rope hooks on it, or on the floats, which you can use to tie the front off the plane to the catapult.
I've looked for a picture but can not find it yet.

Here you see it being pulled out off his little house on the Bismarck. Seeing you will be displaying it with one wing folded, as beeing set up to fly out, it would not be strange to put the straps on you see here on the floats.

On the big ships (Bismarck, Tirpitz, Gneisenau and Sharnhorst) the planes would not be on the catapult in non flyable weather but in their storage hangars. (seen in Peppies post above) If the kit catapult aircraft fastening is anything like the real thing (secured to aircraft at three points, one being the tail) tail sitting will not be a problem.

The straps are at the tie down points where de decals should be (It was a problem were to put them on the model) so this is helpful.

I like the idea of tying it down. Like Patrick said, they would not be on the catapult in bad weather indeed.
But if nothing else helps, I will tie it down.
Like a what if scenario. The put it on the catapult making it flight ready, suddenly a storm appears. No time to take it of the catapult, ty the dam thing down! Or something like that.... lol

I was thinking the same ting.
The launch sled does have 3 points, on at the tail, so that should keep the plane up.

Hello guys, and welcome again!
A lot has happened the past day's so let's get on with it.

This build is out of my comfort zone, and it shows.
I just did what I normally do, after painting, put a gloss varnish on (future) decals on and seal it with another coat of future.
Apparently the gloss coat wasn't smooth enough, causing silvering decals....
And for some reason the big H was starting to crack while trying to get rid of the silvering by adding micro sol on it....

I solved it by removing the cracked part with a blade, and touched up the H with paint.
After a matt varnish and a brown filter, it was starting to look way better

The underside of the plane received a pin wash with AK panel liner.

Time to get some work done at the canopy.
The original kit part was supplied as a flat "IKEA" package, and had a serious problem of large conection taps showing trough the visible part of the glass. So I invested in a After market canopy from Alley Cat witch is from resin and moulded in one part.

With my trusty micro saw who has seen to much battles, I cut the part loos gently, and cleaned them up by sanding and polishing the edges.

Test fitted them to see If the needed more work, but it worked out just fine.

The gun was test fitted as well.

Time to put out the clear for the canopy.
For all Dutch guys that are looking for this product in the Netherlands, This bottle is available by AH (Albert Heijn) supermarket.

Dipped the canopy into the clear, put it onto a piece of kitchen towel, and put a large glass over it to prevent dust sticking to the wet clear.

After drying overnight, I masked of the glass with the masking set supplied with the canopy.
It comes with enough masks for the outside and inside of the canopy.

Primed black, and painted black green.

After removing the masks, it looks awesome.
I had some stickiness from the masks, but that was easily removed with a q-tip of whit spirit.

And presto! Test fitted it on the arado.

Time to prep the plane for adding the rigging.

Drilled holes where the should be, and added black fishing wire into the holes.

Drilled holes into the floats and with super glue added the wires into that while holding the wire straight and tight.
Somehow the two pics of that progress disappeared.... sorry about that, but the rigging is shown later on.

For now, Time for a brew...

And found a pic with the rigging shown...
In the middle (cross section) I applied a drop of wood glue that would b the disks.
The wires are painted steel.
The antenna is made from a fishing wire as well, but much thinner.

The steel cable of the wing is also a fishing wire.

The engine compartment is build open, for it frekking awesome!
The compartment where the fuel tank would be is build open at on side. the other side I glued shut, for I like it better that way.
I added some wires in that compartment that would be the throttle and some Electra wiring. No ref pic found of it, so I guessed it.

With that done, the build is finished.
The next step will be weathering this bird, and making a start at the ships catapult!

That canopy was exspensive, but worth every penny!
The comic book update was funny indeed, wasn't sure people would like it, so skipped it this update. Made a vid instead. I think the little guys will be present again when I'm starting at the ships catapult.

Hi guys!

I'm letting the Arado for what it is now, I'm weathering her another time.
To set my mind free of it for a while, I started the build at the awesome catapult.

I decided to start on the launch sled that would hold the plane.

The support tubes that would hold the plane are from resin, and a bit warped and very fragile.

I was affraid it would not hold the heavy plane, so I thought to replace it for messing tubes I bought at the local hardware store.
5,4,3 and 2 mm

One hour of cutting later...

Time to do the soldering...
Haven't soldered since High school, so be gentle guys...
First lining all up

And after several atemps the sled is almost done.
Tough job. but very pleased with the result.

The air tubes for the actual launching were up next.
Some metal tubes are suplied for this.

Thank God for the Ultimate skinny sanders...

It's resin, and toxic.
I'm working in a well ventilated area, and I'm wearing a mask.

One down.... the figure is for the scale... It's big!

And both done!

Next step is the platform where the sled is on

The Pulley blocks are on a heavy piece of metal tube as supplied in the kit.

Did a said it was big? 44 cm long

Plastic strips are added on the top side for metal strips, where the sled would slide on.

Test fitted the sled....Awesome isn't it?
I'm going to glue the sled onto the catapult. It is workable, but I think it;s safer to glue it.

Air tubes glued on and piping added.

It's getting realy heavy know!
Thats the reason I must add 1kg weight in the base...

Airtubes that Imade from 1.50mm electra wire added

And this is how far I am so far.
To give a impression, The catapult is going onto a round base.
That round base is a meat cutting board that is turned up side down.
I'm planning on putting wooden board on it to make the ships deck from the Tirpiz or Bismarck.
Painting the side of the base dark grey like the colour of the ships hull.
