Gentlemen, I now will building this 109...

I must apologise to any of you who were looking forward to the Spit...

The 109 was a bit of cheer-myself-up pressie, a bit of a punt in the dark as well, but when I opened the box I couldn't resist, the detail is amazing.
Who said Dragon instructions are confusing...

Spure shots, just check out the detail..

A bit of PE and the decs look ok..

Clear gear..

Undecided which scheme to do...

There you go, a fabulous kit. I have no idea how it will go together but I hope I can pull it off (ooer)

Ok then lads lets have a look...
Detail is as great as we thought and fits perfectly. We all love PE especially in the cockpit, but sometimes you've got to let the kit breathe, besides it'll be fun painting all this up...won't it?

Naa that's the problem with 1/32 (or even bigger).
But warbird fighters are quite ok in size.
Worse with bombers and modern jets etc. Just to big.
Why I suspect my JU88s and He111 etc will probably stay in the stash...

I popped in my local model shop on Saturday and he had a couple of Revels He111 and their new Arado 196 in 1/32, the box's are enormous massive, what on earth you'd do with them I don't know Patrick. Shame cause I'd love either

A quick update lads...
Wings...

Fiddely ain't the word, I've never buggered about so much. This kit nearly suffered severe "battle damage"...

There's a few parts to the construction including these little blighters...

Shame really that there is a cover to go on over the gun. The DS wheel well thing is quite effective as I believe it's leather or a fabric material in reality.

To lighten the mood, I stuck wheels on sticks..

That'll do for now lads, I'm ready to prime it all up and these quite a bit.

Thanx Pat, I struggled quite a bit on the wings mate to be honest. I think they're supposed to be movable

but I'm not nevey good with nanotechnology.
I've made a start on some painting but I'll have to show you later as I'm off to work for a bit....yes I know...

Internal colour is RLM 02 Mr Hobby Aquaous. You think it might be non-descript greyish colour but its actullay quite nice...

Cockpit..

Fuselage side walls with some detail painting..

Daimler Benz 601A motor...

Instrument panel...

All above require glossing and weathering.

Glossing and a bit of weathering later, I managed to get some assembly done (about time

)....

Here's a shot of the instrument panel fixed on...ooooh..

At last! A bit of a milestone! Cockpit in and fuselage together. Don't get me wrong lads, this is a great kit but maybe I'm just not ready for 32 scale. My attention span isn't what it was

Fit's together nicely. Needs a bit of a rub down (don't we all) but I think we'd be happy with these seams?

Er...hmmm..

That'll do (pig). Hope to get wings etc on this weekend and maybe some primer, we'll see.

Getting close to firing up the old Evo...

Right, the bloody thing almost took a drive. The engine cover is a b****h, it doesn't fit right, Paul warned me about it and he's damn well right...

I know it's not much, but compared to the rest of the kit it was a bit of a shock. I haven't tried the top cover yet either

Not bad underneath though..

Front of the canopy isn't great either..

Going to mask off the engine and then prime her up, then pre-shade, then.....well you know the rest

Primed up with the usual AK stuff..still dolphin smooooth...in grey...

There can nothing as boring as looking at priming

Smoooth..

Dries quick too, I managed to pre-shade in the same session as well...

I went for black in the end. Here I'm trying out some light and dark patches to try to get a knackered, mottled look...we'll see what happens..

.....the next day...

RLM 78 for the underside. Your not actullay seeing a true representation of the colour, in think the brown spinning out the lens of my iPad or is it the light?

The mottling effect isn't coming out either really, you'll obviously have take my word for it unless you want to pop round, you're more than welcome..the kettle's on..

The yellow RLM 04 has been applied to the tailplane as well btw.

Looks really good mate!

And You got the RLM78 right even though I was a little to quick and wrote 65...

(although 65 is ok until late 1941 when 78 was mandatory in North Africa)

Glad You choose Gunze, still considered (by the collective Luftwaffe nerds in the world) to be the most accurate RLM match.

I guess this kit suffers from the same syndrome as my Zvezda 109F, build the complete engine and you must show it, as in have the cowlings open/off. Cowlings closed, one need to "adjust" engine accordingly...

(as in cut/sand away until cowling fits)

I don't know about Aquaous being the best colour match ( i dont know enough), for me Pat they are just lovely to use to clean up and got a lovely semi gloss finish, there's even something about the smell

As for the cowling? I dunno, I've proberly gotta leave the top section off a display the engine even though it ain't good enough really..

RLM 80 this time.
In this situation the H & S Evolution comes into its own, great airbrush. The only problem I had was me

All stripped off and waiting for her gloss cote..

Decals will be next

Sorry I missed your question on pre-shading using black. I can only talk from my experience and you can use black unless your painting light colours over the top like yellow and white. I find these colours look too weathered or you have to spray to much to get weathering correct and you lose detail. Just my opinion.

Mate, skip the Your the problem part, You did an excellent paintjob!
The mottles came out just perfect and I really like it.
You have created a very good canvas for decals and weathering.
This will be a great looking Emil Im sure.

As for pre-shading it depends for me. Modern or WWII etc, heavy or light wear...(Im a fan of wear)
For WWII,
Yellow, white base, brown tones
White, grey tones (with brown if heavy weathering)
Blues, dark blue or black
Greys, Dark grey or black
Greens, Dark green or brown or black depending

I test spray and experiment a lot. Only way really to find your individual preferences I guess.

Also I'm doing more post shading than pre shading. I see it as one continuous weathering process after primer till the bitter end.
One example is adding grime already in pre shading, lets say I use black for the panel lines etc. I might go in with brown in certain areas to be the base for grime, soot, oil etc.
Attached two examples of where I have played around with this and how it turned out. (and where I forced myself to stop just before going over the top!

Experimenting is the key Pat, you're right about that.

Wow! I've been so pre-occupied with my own build and completing the Arado, that I've missed your updates mate! She's looking a cracker, Tim. The pre-shading of lights and darks looks like it has paid of on the shading and tonal variations. Looking forward to seeing your next update! Drink more Cider, I say!

Your 109 looks sensational mate. The pre-shading is very cool, I use black btw, but I'm still new at it and tend to experiment with post-shading and bleaching if the pre-shading doesn't do it for me. Especially on camo jobs.
The yellow engine cowling is perfectly shaded too btw, looks brilliant!

All decaled up and a tickle coat of gloss..

Not the best fit

Actullay I think it is me. I didn't test fit the engine bay and cowling when I was first getting the fuselage together

I best get out the old Ultimate dark dirt and start sloshing it about then...
