Hasagawa 1/48 NIK1-Ja Shiden (George) Type 11

Post by Paul »

So as I'm putting off the bradley build for a short while i thought i would enter into this GB, I've wanted to build a Japanese aircraft for some time so this is the perfect excuse :thumb2:

It looks to be a good kit that seems to fit together well, the cockpit only took 15 mins to build and glue together. i then primed it in alclad gloss black primer then spread it in alclad aluminium. I then used mig worn effects fluid and over coated with the green cockpit colour. This was then wetted and worn away with a stiff bristled brush.

Wings all glued together, again great fit with just some shading required

And test fitting the fuselage halves and the wing roots, looks to be fairly trouble free :thumb2:

Looks great Paul, I really like the effect of the chipping fluid. I think I am going to have to spend more money with Mig Ammo soon  .

Humm; love this.

I will probably join in here with a zero A6m5 from hasegawa too. I'll just have to order the paint masks for the canopy.

Something tells me that she will be quickly built...

Enjoy

You are a prolific builder man! The start is looking great; very clean build up so far. I look forward to your next update (which might actually be posted by the time I hit the submit button!). :D

LOL Justin

Any the cockpit was clear coated then given an oil wash, once dry i removed al the excess and stuck the instrument panel on. I was gong to get some seatbelt for it, but its just a quick build and you can barley see in the cockpit anyway. Oh yeah i drilled out the seat to as it was pointed out to me on Facebook it should be drilled out. Its a simple cockpit that could benefit from a zoom etch or resin set, but its ok for a quick build :cheers2:

The cockpit tub was then glued in position and i joined up the fuselage halves, fit seems pretty good looks like just little filler needed here and there :thumb2:

Will leave this for a few days and get back to the SU-30

Amazing work on the cockpit. You say you clear coated it? Did you put a satin over it after the washe or left it clear? This looks stunning work mate!! 8-) 8-) 8-)

So this is where this is at now, all together, canopy masked (needed a eduard mask set as theres no real demarcation to allow proper using with tape)

It was primed in badger grey primer and preshaded with black.

I used the new AK interactive to spray the dark green your and lighted it slightly with some white to panel fade/bleach the panels. I used citadel mytheril silver for the underside, sadly a bit has pulled off with the masking tape, my fault for not allowing it to dry over night.
Image
Image

Thinned with Ultimate thinner they sprayed perfectly (both he AK and citadel), and i was very impressed with the AK colours.

I didn't want to use the kit decals for the roundels and yellow warning on the wing leading edges, so i masked them off, using a circle cutter to make the wings and fuselage roundels, i had a little bit of paint bleed on the fuselage sides but they look ok other than that

Little bit of the citadel pulled off, not the primers fault should have let the citadel cure a tad longer

I have no idea about the colour correctness, but your paintwork is superb Paul.
That subtle fading on the green is wicked dude.

So final stretch and this is finished

A couple of first today, i used an AK panel liner wash to high light the recessed details, it dries really fast and is a good colour for the green.

Image

Got all the landing gear attached and all other smaller parts glued in position then gave it a matt coat and started to fade the panels using various green tones of pigments taken form pastel chalks.

I scraped some of each pastel and ground it in place where needed on the model, mostly panel centres, i use the 2 lighter tones of green and removed the excess with a large flat brush. The effect gives it a nice worn aged look, which is hard to see in the pictures.

I also added oil streaks and staining using oil washes and painted the exhaust and stains.

Finally finishing off with some easy line for the antenna.

I used dark umber pigments to give a ground in look to he underside too
