Thumboy's Zero Eggplane

Hi everyone This will be my entry to the this years eggplane SIG. After building the FW 190 last year I decided to get a bit extra for this years entry in the form of a resin interior from RetroKit The 190 had virtually no interior (just a seat- not even a floor) after some scratch building it looked ok but the interior should make a huge difference to the basic kit and it will be my first time working with resin

I am not sure of all my plans for this build yet but it will probably have a bit of scratch building and I think I will try heavy chipping not sure if I will use a chipping fluid, maskol or the salt method.

I have been looking forward to this SIG, last year was great fun roll on April

Update #1

Here we go again with the most eggcellent SIG of the year. first thing to do was open up the fuselage to accommodate the retrokit cockpit. Not too hard with a razor saw and a dremel but it does require more to be removed than I thought. After fitting the cockpit and a dry fit to check everything else still fits I decided to make some upgrades.



First up - drill out the exhausts



Then an upgrade to the nose armament



My first attempt at scribing in panel lines - its harder than it looks plenty of filler in the areas where I slipped





Getting there bit its still missing something - more guns ...oh and antenna masts





To the garage for primer

Update #2

after the first prime the panel line scribing came out ok



a little bit of filling to tidy up





re priming after sanding touch ups

top tip of the day - heat up spay can in warm water for 5 minutes



was not looking forward to this bit



masking all done
canopy masking was actually quite easy due to large raised frame lines



after painting cockpit green its time for a wash of oil paints





dry brushing





cockpit all assembled







next job is to glue on the canopy

Update #3

Canopy went on, filled the small gaps with more Kristal klear and wiped off any excess with a damp paper towel



XF-12 Japanese navy grey on the bottom

I decided to add the same ripple demarcation as on my airfix 1/72 zero and the J7W1 I made for the rising sun GB



and tonight I have painted the silver XF-16 with X-22 clear over the top to protect it from the next stage...



... Next up will be the heavy chipping, I have not tried this before and am a little nervous any tips would be greatly received

Update #4

after 3 coats of chipping fluid I lied down the XF-11 dark green then started to chip away with a stiff brush



I got a bit carried away...





I want heavily weathered but I still want some green paint left maskol to the rescue

looks like an alien sneezed... I hope this works





after another coat of dark green and black



how she is looking now. still heavily chipped but looking a bit more how I intended.

Update #5

After a crazy week at work last week things are progressing nicely this week and I should be finishing my egg this weekend.

I wasn't totally happy with the chipping effect even after my maskol and re-spray so I cut up a bit of foam packaging and splodged on some more dark green.







I have had problems with egg plane decals before so I decided to paint most of them (first time doing this)



maskol again - to keep some of the silver chipping coming through the hinomaru













oil paint pin wash and streaking



once dry cleaned off with a bud moistened with odourless solvent





matt coat once everything was totally dry the next day

Thanks Goose, I totally agree with you, it is way beyond anything I have done before and I would never do this to a normal model but I decided to let my hair down on this build and try some new things. I have not used the chipping fluid before and it could be useful in the right situation. I also have the worn effects fluid which might be more useful in my future builds.

Update #6

after taking off the canopy masking I added some chipping to the leading edge of the wings and more detail to the prop with my trusty silver pencil



next up Tamiya weathering master which I find much easier to control on an aircraft then powder pigments. I used these for exhaust staining, dirt on the landing gear and a gun stain on the wings



then some chalk pastels - scraped with a knife to make a powder than add to the model with a brush. black on the panel lines to add some post shading and white and sand here and there for highlights.



and last but not least the antenna wire made from ez line



here she is just before some final touches. I will save the final pictures for the reveal. thanks for following my build
