Varnish before hairspray technique?

Post by Baardmans »

Hey guys i have a question,
I'm going to try my first white wash using the hairspray technique on a T34.
Do you put a protective coating (varnish) on the paint before you spray the hairspray on?
I'm working with acrylics, vallejo for the base an might try revell for the white.

I only did the hair spray once I didn't use varnish over the base layer and it worked out fine all the things I have seen or read about it say no varnish in before hair spray. Only a varnish when you are finished

Hey Baardamans,

Putting on a varnish is not necessary unless you intend to put decals on before the white. If you are wanting decals on after you perform the chipping then you will want to put gloss varnish or satin varnish on top of the chipped white coat since there still can be residual hairspray stickyness.

1. Base color
2. Put varnish on!!!! Matt varnish so you get small chips. A must to make hairspray work.
3. Hairspray watch out with amount and time
4. 2:nd color
5. Chip away have tissue at hand to wipe down the tank from excess water.

I am gonna have to disagree with #2 as it is not a must to make hairspray work. Now to get a certain effect, maybe, but it's not clear in gustavlekstals reply.

Recently I finished my T-34/76 and the chipping worked fine without varnish prior to the white coat.

Thanks all!
Sorry i forgot to put my name under it, it's Bert :ooops:
I think i will varnish the turret with the decals and leave the hull as is then.
This way i can see the difference and if i do not like it, its white WASH............

Timtamtung, I'm going to brush paint the white wash layer as that is what they usually did in the field.
I want to know if that works and if the effect is realistic.
When i'm done i will put on the forum how it went.
Cheers Bert

Good question. I have never tried but I don't see why it wouldn't work. Now I have to try it hah.

Bert, that is usually the best idea. Try things out on a part no one will really see, like the undercarriage of the vehicle or any extra plastic bits.

Some videos I used as learning tools have been some of the Mig workshop vids.

Chipping fluid(Hair spray) vs Washable white

Another Mig vid painitng a t34

Probably the best video of Mig painting a 1/16 KV-2

Thanks for the links Kibble, I'm going to watch those. I do like Mig's style.
