This looks great but uuuhhhh...
Please don't bring it to Veldhoven , there are lots of good plane builders already and i really don't need more competition

But yoking a side it is looking really good and from what i have seen i can do some more to my plane when i finally start it
It won't be a Arado though but i have some American mussle to enter
Your engine is a good reference as how it can be made to look good but then i think my Thunderbolt has a double radial engine so that would mean twice the labour
But i hope to get that one going soon when i clear my bench of the last builds i have going on
But this build defently provides inspiration to build something with wings

I shall never compete at a speed build, for I have lost it even before starting it!

As always, taking my time with this build for it's another competition model. Loads of first time thingies as well.
And it's a long, long way from finished!

This project is getting BIG an Heavy! Kinda like me for sitting at the bench instead of going to the gym like I used t do... lol
Glad you like it though. I have it all planed inside of my head. I know exactly how it should look when finished.
A winner? Don't now about that, but I would be lying if I would not hope so.

It would be nice to win a prize at the upcoming modelling competition on October 11th.

This build is awesome just when you think damn look at that plane, you go and pull that catapult out!!! Joking aside I really love the Arado I remember building one as a kid, from Airfix and just love the whole look of the plane!

Been reading this while I recover from an illness soo much awesome that I will drag myself to the bench

It is a P-47D Thunderbolt
The mustang had the RR Merlin wich was English
Mine has a Pratt and whitney R2800 double wasp engine
But i think i should have some pics for the Photo Etch Benders page too as i have several pe sets for the cockpit and gunbays wich are open
But this plane was stronger then the mustang ehrn it comes to getting shot
And the version i am going to make is called Miss Fine and has a bit of nose art to prove it

Right!
Time to do some more work on the catapult.
I still did not finished the weathering to the Adrado, for I did not feel like doing so.
The base I am working on is a though job, and gave me some question marks above my head how to solve it...

This is the bottom part of the two piece of the tower.
It puzzled me how to attach it the round wooden base (cutting board)
Of course, I can glue it or screw it.
BUT! If I do that, It's going to be very hard to paint it while its on the board.
I need to add at least 1 kg of weight to prevent the catapult for tipping over.
I will fill it up with gravel and diluted wood glue.
But when I will add the weight I cant screw it on later, or all glue will run out of the holes.....
Still following me?

Let me explain it with pics, for that a bit more clear I think...

First I drilled holes into he bottom resin part and trough the cutting board, and put 4 bolts trough it.

Then, I took a BIC pen

And cut off 4 pieces from 1 cm each.

Closed the top with a piece of plastic card.

I glued 4 nuts over the holes, and glued the pieces of pen on top of that.

Filled both pieces with gravel. The kind you will find at the bottom of aquariums.

Poured the diluted wood glue over it

And mixed it up good.

Let it dry for a couple of days, and that gave me a heavy base.
Because of the pen trick I still can bolt the wooden board to the base real easy

Next thing I was working on are the platforms.
Lots of cleaning up here, and I decided to let it all rest at this very point.

I need to take my mind of this build for a couple of weeks, so I started to paint some figures.
I Dutch we say:" verandering van spijs doet eten" Witch means: "A change of meal keeps you eating".
In other words, doing something else for a while makes me want to get back to this build without rushing it.

On this very moment, struggling like hell with the cables that pulled the launch sled. .. can't get them tight enough without slack, pulling to hard broke off one hook of the sled so repairs must be done.

Ah well... keeps me busy for now.. lol

Have you maybe considered swapping out the cable for a more pliable material for the cable Frans? Something that you can pull tight without mush stress but yet still bend around shapes like a winch? Instead of wire, maybe a thick thread or string?

Did you try to use lead wire ?
It is bound to break before resin breaks and i have had good results using it in the past to make cables
The only drawback is the lenght of the wire
It you need a bigger piece then the wire you need to hide the joint somewhere
Some metal wire that a florist (i think it is called but someine who works with flowers) uses could be a good option too as this is flexible and strong
I use that when i need large pieces and you can buy it in most gardening shops

I did tried several options, But wasn't happy with it.
My first plan was to use wire that kids use to make beam bracelets from. I could get that nice and tight, but looking at it the next day, all was having a sag again. I mean, tension was gone. I think that had to do with temperature.
I need cable between 0.6 and 0.8 mm. I'm using now galvanised cable of 0.8 mm, but to be honest, I think it looks to big.
I can make it pliable by making a shaft like the real ones had, but I need to get the cable tight. Last time I did that the eye of the sled broke of.
I do have some real galvanised cable of 0.3 mm, but that would be way to thin I think...
So I think of switching to vinyl wire instead. If I can find it that is. Normal wire always seems to have those little pubes on it

I do have some elastic wire coming this way, so maybe that's an option.
Here are some pics, I think it looks too thick though.

Ok guys, Not really a update, but I think the steel cable problem is solved now.
I tried to get it right and tight with real steel cable, even ordered it from Canada, but it did not worked out for me.
Even broke of the second eye of the sled.. had to repair that as well.

If you guys ever going to build this catapult, replace the resin eyes for copper wire!
So, listening to some advice, I bought a roll of masonry cord, and that did the trick I think.

Now, it still might look a bit thick, but this is the best option I've got.
And when it's painted, it will look pretty nice!

This part of the catapult is done now, not paying to much attention to the bottom side for that will not be visible anyway.

So slow and steady I will continue with the platform this weekend!

Hi guys!
Had a very good modelling day today, so I wanted to share it with you

I worked at the launch platform, and that does have a major error....
The mesh need to be placed between a bottom part and a top part.

The back side of the platform gave me no problem at all, but the front part? Boy...
Not symmetrical at all!

Tried to flip it upside down, make it fit, sand it..... no luck.
So it's time to take out the plastic card, and scratch build that part..

Making some small strips

And after a hour cutting and gluing, the part (on the right) is replaced and glued onto the platform.

Filling all seams with liquid putty

And sanded it down nice and smooth...

The drawing said to make the poles from 1mm wire and pieces of sprue with holes drilled into it...
Hell no.... going after market for that!
Bought ships railing poles at RB models. Ready to use, just add a wire in them... lol

Not 100% straight, but I figured that the real thing would not be that straight too, as it was on a war ship...

Test fitted all parts.
Gotta say, this is beginning to look awesome!

And off course, I could NOT resist putting the Arado on top of the launch sled to see the whole thing...
The pliers is for contra weight for nothing is glued, and to prevent all from tipping over.
Would love to here what you guys think of it

Just need to add a railing around the base and add some small parts, and it's ready to take some primer.
The Arado still needs it's final weathering, but when I'm still on the flow with the catapult, I will keep on working on it.

Why didn't i look for this kit but then again you make it look a.lot more easy then i think it really is
I have been messing with a engine and cockpit for 2 weeks now and i am still not done with that
That is what i like about armor , just slap all the parts together first and then worry about painting and weathering ( or put it to the side and don't worry about that)
But i think you are nailing this build Frans and those details like the raillings and cables should really pop out when it is painted
Are you planning somethung special with painting and weathering because , well a battleship.tends to rust and chip paint all over
So keep up the great work

It does look easy doesn't it?

It's not. ... It's hell on earth. . In scale 1:32 that is!
It's a full resin kit. So that means a LOT of sanding and a lot of parts need to be altered. I'm just not showing every step for that would make this thread way to long.. lol.
I'm going to weather it yes, but I will have to do some research on that one. Rust streaks will be present, and the paint will be suffering from the salty sea water. Got to figure out how to do that!
I'm a AFV builder myself as you know, and I was suffering with the same problem. Building something and learning that I should of painted it first.

Hats of to all plane builders out there for I underestimate these models for there complex builds. Anyways, is a slow progress and I will continue for its going well. I'm very tempted to crack open a AFV kit, but this is going with me at SMC hoping to become a eye catcher. ....

Hello everybody!
I'm near the finish line now

I was Thinking of putting the catapult on a ships deck, so planks had to be made.
I'm using balsa wood for this, and cut them with a balsa wood cutter.

And chopped them at the right length with my balsa wood guillotine.

Until I have a nice pile of wood...

And added it onto the round cutting board with wood glue.

Balsa wood is easily sanded into a round shape

When all deck planking was finished and everything sanded, I added a Wood Ageing Solution wash from AK and let it dry.

After it dried up, I took a paper towel with white spirit, and began to take off all residue.

Test fitted all onto the deck, and It's starting to look sweet.

People who know me, know I'm not easily pleased, and I was getting annoyed with the "steel" cables that pulled the launch-sled.
The white wire I used is 0.8 mm and to thick IMHO. Also the wire is keep getting slack, they are not staying tight.
Another hobbyist (my mom) pointed me to a hobby site she uses, and was telling me they had wire also.
And the did.
0.6 mm elastic wire. I thought, elastic would be better for that would be able to keep tension on the cables.
I also found some metal parts that are being used to protect wire, and those will be perfect for making the steel wire shafts.

Better...way better!

Next step was making a ladder out of 1 mm wire. I kinda forgot to make some progress pics of it, but I cut the wire in the right length and bended them in the right shape. then I soldered all pieces together giving me this result.

I think this looks great!

The last thing that needs to be done to complete this model, is adding two railings around the big base.
I use 1 mm wire that is used for tying flowers together.
It's 1 mm straight wire that can be bent in shape easy.

Painted the side of the cutting board dark sea grey to imitate the ships hull.

All ready for taking the primer.

And here she is all primed in very dark grey.
The base colour will be Medium sea grey, hi lighted with light grey.

As for I had to order that colour and I want to let the primer set for a couple of days, This is where I finish this update.
I'm still looking for a figure for this catapult, thinking of a pilot or mechanic, but no success so far...

I'm looking for a figure that is looking at the plane or something. No luck yet. The figures you showed me a good, but I'm not pitting a pilot in the cockpit. Also ace pilot Werner is no option (nice figure btw) for Werner was a messerschmitt pilot.... I just keep looking!

Just a small update now,
I've primed the catapult with panzer grey from Vallejo and applied a base coat of medium sea grey. To protect the paint while weathering, I applied two coats of Alclad gloss. She's beginning to look the part.

Made a beginning at adding Rust and rust streaks.
I do not want go wild and extreme on this, but I realy have to take a good look on pics of ships and how the will rust.
Just some subtle paint chipping and rust and dirt for what I could see..
The railings are not 100 % straight, but I don't mind for the real one's would not be straight after a sea battle.. lol
Anyway, here are some pics of the weathering progress so far, feel free to leave some comments and maybe even some tips would be nice

The instrument panel had no decals for the gauges, These were printed on the instruction manual, but to small...
So I had a look into my spare decal box and found two decals for the top two gauges. The rest is hand painted, and I think they look nice.
The launch handle is made out of a pin head.

That's as far as I go today guys.
I got a couple day's off next week starting Thursday, so I will be able to concentrate on this catapult some more.

The weathering is on hold at the moment for I have to do a bit more research.
I'm working at a figure that's going to stand on top of the launch platform.

Indeed, not finished just yet... Still a lot of work ahead.
Dirt, grease and oils need to be added indeed.
Rain marks and water stains are also planed.

I'm letting it rest until Thursday, when I have a couple of day's off...
