I wanna try oil wash, hints?

Ok, so I have thought about trying oil washes to weather my aircrafts for a while now. I finally bought the stuff i want, and im eager to try it out. The main areas of use will be adding streaks to the exterior of the aircraft and also wheel wells and cockpits. What do I need to consider before I do these things? The only thing I know is that the gloss cote should be acrylic. Other questions could include:

1. Drying times
2. How to do streaks
3. Sealing the wash down
4. Before or after decaling?
5. Thinner/paint ratio
6. Other tools I need

Hello Gents,

I hope I will be able to help you a little bit. First of all, if you want you can jump into one of vids when I explain a little bit how I do washes.

Now let’s try to deal with all subjects one by one

1.Drying times
depends on medium you will use to thin oils – for me turpentine had the longest dry time (in extreme case it was 2 weeks) that may take weeks, mineral spirit theoretically should dry whithin 2-3 days solid. Lighter liquid seems to be more convenient – it dries instantly, but the solid fix of paint pigment is achieved after 2 days
2. How to do streaks
Can’t say much about the mixtures for streaks as I only used ready-to-use products of MIG or AK interactive (they seem to be thicker pigmented than washes).
Technically, you apply mixture with strict vertical moves, variable length, light force rather with thin brush (can be long hair brush). Then you take another, wider brush, you dampen it a little bit in thinner for oils and correct the streaks (e.g. by fast, light moves over and around streaks, also vertical).
3. Sealing the wash down
Personally, I secure the wash before continuing weathering. Even if wash is dry it can happen that paint pigments in recessed lines or around rivets may be accidentially removed when you continue with weathering (especially that wash is normally applied on gloss varnish, so very even surface).
4. Before or after decaling?
I do it after decaling. It helps to harmonise or blend the decals with the rest of model and dampens a little bit it brightness giving them immediately weathered look.
5. Thinner/paint ratio
10% paint to thinner. That’s , as far as I know, a common ratio for washes.
6. Other tools I need
Brushes, some cup/jar/can to mix the wash and that’s basically it. I don’t think you need anything else.
