Ok it's not too bad. Definitely something to work on. And I also repaired the bomb "trapeze" by butchering the same part from my spare Stuka kit. Hopefully that's the last time I have to raid that.

Last play for today, as the filling CA is drying on the wing root gaps I put the blowmobiles together and worked on the underwing stores a bit.
Time for a dry fit.

I think it's going to look pretty cool with the skids.

Thanks all, I haven't thought about a winter camo actually, the kit comes with normal camo schemes and I have the AK Luftwaffe set that I want to use so probably not. I'm still working out how to display it so we'll see what happens.

A few catch up photos and where I am right now. I just need to give it a tidy up, got a couple of little jobs to do, then it can be primed.
As far as the kit goes generally it's not a bad one to put together, if you don't mind sanding and filling, a lot. It could be a little more precise, but we're modelers aren't we? Got to do the hard yards sometimes. lol

I got the seatbelts on the pilot and gunner. Not sure if they were really designed to go over a pilot but they're there anyway.

Canopy masked and PE'd. Seems like a lot of work but I just attacked it one piece at a time, turned out ok I think.

The square, shiny thing is his mirror, I took some silver backing plastic from my pain relief patch. lol Worked a treat.

Oh yeah, major upgrade to the workstation the last couple of days:

Ok, where I'm up to now. The props just sitting on for show.

Thanks fellas for the kind comments, been a while since I updated as I've been setting up the mancave to "workable". It's now a great place to work so work I shall!
I had a brain fade when I painted the RLM04 Yellow. I have the Mr Color version, and it's the only Mr Color paint I own and thought it was enamel-based so I thinned it with enamel thinners. It seemed to mix ok so I carried on. It just spluttered out of the airbrush, no matter what air pressure or consistency I tried. And to double the brain fade I also painted the tops of the wing tips, without checking the paint scheme obviously, so I had to redress that situation before I could carry on. I also tackled the ongoing fuselage seamline issue that just won't go away.
In the meantime I received a delivery of a couple of versions of Mr Surfacer, including Mr Surfacer 1000 Primer. Which I used to re-prime the wayward yellow up top, and also the Fuselage seamline. I will be using this primer from now on I think. The Vallego primer just refuses to sand without peeling.

Anyway. Some of the pics.

The seam problem that reared it's ugly head a few more times yet. The join would "let go" and I'd have to re-glue etc. It became a real pain. In the end I cleaned the joint right up again (after it was primed and pre-shaded). Hit it with copious amounts of Mr Cement S and worked it into the join. Then topped the joint with Tamiya poly cement in the hope it would just melt the seam together. It worked.

The yellow, that shouldn't have been there in the first place.

Re-primed with the Mr Surfacer.

Pre-shaded top and bottom.

Underside painted with AK Interactive RLM65. Very nice paint to work with. Some bleaching done also to break up the colour a bit.

I know mines a crap kit to start with, but by the time I've sanded flat the seams the glue gives way. At the risk of being hung, drawn and quartered. I'm starting to prefer Revell contacta over Tamiya extra thin.

Ahh yes, I would rather mine than yours, the actual fit was absolutely perfect. Yours is a nightmare and well done on getting to somewhere decent. That's a mind job alright.

I have ordered another pot of Mr Surfacer Primer and put the Vallego bottle away for now. It's miles better! You can sand it within a couple of hours of painting (even less maybe, but that's when I did), and there's no peeling whatsoever. First try, but first impressions are very good. Definitely worth a try.

And thank you, I'm trying to get some computer time to catch up on everyone's builds. There's a lot going on. lol

Thanks Patrick! I have the first coat of green on up top, had some more trouble with paints and thinners with that coat but it's ok. It will get a winter coat over the top anyway, so it's going to end up looking good and dirty.

Just got a minor holdup, ran out of masking tape and appropriate thinners, so going on with other stuff until I can restock. The good news is the F-14 is getting some attention again.

Ok back in the game, got everything I needed to finish this build so finish it I will.

RLM71 was painted a week or so ago, then ran out of masking tape so couldn't mask up for the RLM70 second camo colour. So pictures are from that point, this morning I masked up what needed to be masked then sprayed on the RLM70 in question. Got to say I've made up some thinners from ingredients purchased on my recent trip to the city (yesterday) and had my first trouble-free paint session in ages. A huge relief I've been dicking around with thinners for a couple of weeks now, mainly due to my location and lack of supply. But I'm good to go now.

I gave the entire upper a rub with 1500 wet and dry just to knock off the rough tips. It helped a lot. The wing still has some inconsistencies but it's much better.

Masking done!!

RLM70 on.

Unmasked!

I will be playing with some winter treatment so the plane won't end up looking like this. I think it's rather pretty at some angles. lol It will get dirtied up good and proper though.

Just took some closer shots, I'm curious how that fuselage join turned out. I think I'm glad I went to the extra effort and redid it. Looks ok from here.

Also the blowmobiles were supposed to be completely green from overhead (In the instructions they were all blue on top). Hasn't quite worked out that way.

Thanks Patrick you may be disappointed that I spent day 2 of painting this thing on a mission of completely messing it up. lol intentionally, of course.
Before I paint the winter camo pattern I saw an opportunity to attack a blank canvas with some post-shading, bleaching and general tone shifts throughout. I'm about halfway through the process but I'll post a few pics so you can see what I'm aiming to do. The big thing is now I have to pull it off.
Before I cover it up paradoxically.

Lol anyway, picture paints a 1000 words they say.

Post-shaded. Severly.

A few blowouts and mistakes, they'll be taken care of.

Some exhaust stains and and obvious issue with the blowmobiles, I think by the end of tomorrow they'll be all green.

Bleaching done and started to tone down the post-shading with original colour, the RLM71 is pretty much done here, the RLM70(darker colour) yet to be done. Re-introducing the original colour helps blend the two shades, plus fixes any blowouts from either post-shading or bleaching.

That was todays effort. Sometimes I'm not sure how much to show on these threads, before attention spans get tested. lol So a quick summary of a pretty (for me) complex painting process. But I want to get the practice playing around with it a bit. Saw an opening. Took the shot.

Hehe, neeearly too late Patrick! Just a hint of what's to come, I have marked out the winter camo with a white face paint marker (a fantastic tool for this job). I'll be painting it in today, when I get off my backside that is.

I'll post more pics when it's finished.

Didn't thin the Model Air and it went on fine.

Part-way through the paint. I tried for cloudy looking shapes on the fuselage, as opposed to the "streams through snow" look on the wings. lol

Notice the Swastika is solid white, that's how they come on my AM sheet, I'm going to cloud them up.

Going for the "mechanic that hops up on the plane out in the field workshop with a spray gun and whacks on some sort of a paint job" look.

Paint is on and right rear stabiliser cleaned up a bit.

I've done a wing now, it takes a bit of time to clean up. I dab a cotton bud (tip) with my tongue to take off the face paint, and thinners on a bud to clean up the overspray. First photo shows a bit of everything. Done and not done. Second photo is all cleaned up. Now to do the rest.

The winter camo is pretty much cleaned up and finished. I free-handed the skids and was a little awkward getting paint down in places, but got there in the end.
It will get a dirty wash today all thing going to plan that is.
I will start adding other weathering detail too, as I see fit.

Been a bit of an epic getting the winter camo finished, but I'd do it again, I think it's worked ok.
Now to make it look well weathered.

There are endless variations of Ju87s in winter camo. Many very cool.
I like this patchy type, but also the wormy types.
Never done one myself so far, but can imagine the feeling.
First You have the all the work with the original camo paint.
Just to cover it up again....its like, I better get this right!

So guess it feels pretty good now when done!

Thanks for your comments of encouragement everyone. I'm crawling along with this one as I have to move house soon and no idea how I'm going to do it yet so that's occupying my thoughts at the moment.
When I get into new lodgings I'll proceed with earnest. I have weathered this with a wash, with mixed results, but looking ok. I have been working on a "prop" for the dio as well. More on that later.
Needless to say I'm glad I have the 12 months to finish this and the Tomcat! Going to need every day of it I think. lol

I agree Homer and thanks. I'll be doing some random wear and tear stuff with it, and I think that will do. Sometimes weathering is way overdone IMHO.

Thanks very much Nige. It's actually finished in a sense. I do have plans for a dio for this after I move house. Going on a 1:32/1:35 Eastern Front winter theme. It may not be finished by the time this GB is, but it'll be well under way.

I took off for a few months and didn't end up doing a dio for the Stuka. So I declare it finished and the reveal shots are back there .... somewhere ... (scroll up).

Now to get the F-14 finished in time!
