Tarangus 1/72 J29 Tunnan

Hey,

Been working on other small parts in the kit. I guess that I'm procrastinating the filling/sanding/rescribing effort

Anyway, the area behind the ejection seat looks like this.

Been in contact with some buddies on a swedish forum and it seems that I made a mistake with the canopy. The picture above shows an opened canopy so the protection cover is attached to the canopy glass. I didn't see that at first glance, but when you know it - it's pretty obvious.

The bad news is that I started to cut the rail to make it fit for a closed canopy, but it is too short for a open canopy. Bummer!

After considering to close up the canopy because of this I finally decided to build a new rail using excess material from the PE-frame to be able to keep the canopy open. It's not as crisp at the original part but it will work I think.

Hey guys,

Working with bits and pieces again... lot's of small stuff that needs to be taken care of before I can start painting
The front wheelbay doors where a bit out of shape and too thick as well, so I made new ones out of plasticard and added some PE hinges as well.





I realise that I have missed a couple of post of the wheels and legs of the undercarriage. Here you go:







I'm not 100% happy with the wheels, but I will weather them later on. Maybe add a dark filter too...

Found a great picture of the Tunnan model that I'm building.



I would like to give the panels different colors like on the picture. Maybe it is possible to do that preshading the panels with different grey tones, buff etc... I will make a test on a sheet of styrene card first.

Maybe you should try Xtreme Metal from AK. Seems to be a great product to create metallic surfaces in different shade.
I already have aluminum and dark aluminium, and I plan to use it on my JU-52.

Hey guys,

Have been quite a busy week, unfortunately not on the scalemodel front...

I have assembled the main canopy and put on decals. I think this will work - very pleased with my decision to have an open canopy.



Anyway, primed the aircraft and have fitted the front canopy. Will mask and cover it tonight and put on some black paint.

I will start masking the panels and put basecoat in different colors first and then do the panel preshade, I think.

Hey guys,

I have started to put on some panel preshading now. The idea is to add variations to the primer basecoat for some of the panels, to mimic the difference in surface and colour between different aluminium panels on the aircraft. I have also glosscoated some panels to bring out different texture as well. Alclad laquers are very unforgiving to variations in the surface - so let's use that to our advantage for once

So first, lets invest an hour masking out some of the panels.... I need to do this in 2 or 3 passes, I think.






I managed to knock off the cover plate on the exhaust and it's nowhere to be found I have checked the masking tapes and the floor around my workbench and spraybooth... Devoured by the carpet monster it seems, so I had to put the plastic part from the kit on instead.

Next up is panel preshading.

Yeah, the airframe is small and there are lots of tiny parts, but there are also a lot of detail so I believe that the kit has a huge potential for a 1/72.

More tiny parts being finalised:

The glass is scratchbuilt from a PET blisterpack cut into 1 2x2mm square, It's a little bit too thick but I didn't have any thinner raw material at hand. I have drybrushed the edges of the glass with Tamiya X-25.



Doors for the main landinggear have been painted, coated, washed and coated. It's ready for assembly.

Working with electronics for 30+ years have increased my patience, but I wouldn't call myself skilled at scale-modeling - that might come later when I get more experience...

But I'm quite happy with my learning curve sofar and I have been fortunate to find ISM and IPMS Gothenburg to help and inspire me to get better.

It's quite a while since I posted any updates on the progress of the aircraft body. The reason for that is that the Tunnan have payed a visit to HELL for a week or so and just recently made it back

When I started to paint the aircraft I took the decision to use a combination of preshading of panels in different colors, black panel line preshade and Alclad2 laquer paints. I was eager to get going and I haven't had any issues with Alclad2 metallizers before so I started by putting on a panelline preshade.





I had a lot of trouble with this (as ursual) and I was very unsure about the end result already at this point.

Anyway, next day I started to lay down thin coats of Alclad2 Polished Aluminium.... After a couple of passes I realised that the paint didn't cover the panel preshade enough. I tried to add more thicker layers of Polished Aluminium but the paint didn't cover and instead it crazed the primer (Vallejo Grey)
I have never seen this happen before on any other kit where I used Alclads.







At this point the Tunnan and I shared a very sad moment together....

.....but I decided to not throw the model into the dustbin. Instead I discussed this with some people on a swedish forum and they helped me to understand what was happening:
This was the first time I was using Polished Aluminium and it sprays on very thin and works (best) on gloss surfaces. It doesn't coat 100% on flat surfaces - I'm not even sure it does on gloss surfaces either. Alclads are strong stuff, they should only be applied thin coats and dry for a couple of minutes between coats. Thick coats of paint is very bad especially on a soft primer like the Vallejo - and the Polished Aluminium is extra difficult...

So what I did to recover this was to gently touch up the worst areas and buff the surfaces slightly, added a thin layer of gloss coat to seal the paint and then I sprayed 2-3 very quick passes of Alclad2 White Aluminium (that actually coats) to reduce the panel preshade. Looking back the White Aluminium would probably been a better choice in the first place, since the Tunnan panels are normally not super-polished anyway.





This would of course not recover the destroyed surfaces, but atleast it didn't look like a grid
I even managed to keep some of the (wanted) panel preshade.

So... Next step where gloss coat and decals. I also added the yellow "nose-ring".





After that a thin gloss coat and it's time for wash.





So this where Tunnan and I are at the moment. Next step is to continue with adding some variation to some of the panels with pigments and also maybe some running marks using oil wash.

All the small parts are completed now so I will soon start to make the final assembly.

Hi again!

Almost all small parts are completed now, so it's soon time to begin the final assembly and finalising the build. That means that I soon have to uncover the canopy, which is something that I have mixed feelings about

I have an idea for a diorama, but the aftermarket parts that I need are out of stock and the manufacturer have issues with toolings and I have been waiting for almost 2 months now. So I'm thinking of skipping that and execute Plan B instead.

Anyway; here's some more pictures:

I have also added som yellow and brown pigments to some of the panels to make them more random and also done som "dot-wash" of oxidation streaks and dirt on a couple of places.

that semi-gloss matte look of aircraft alu.

Satin coating it will be... It's funny how different the panel looks in direct sunlight on the real Tunnan on some photos. In sunlight they look like they are polished and shows different colour-tones but in the shadow (or indoors) they just look dull and grey.

The only airworthy Tunnan in Sweden (AFAIK); Yellow Rudolf #29670 is maintained with all the love an care that this gem of an aircraft deserves. It is polished like the crown of a king, but look how different it looks in different light conditions:





Anyway, my Tunnan are heading for homeplate and the aircraft will soon be finished. I have decided to make a dio out of it, with a pilot and maybe also a towing vehicle like the Volvo Stb 953, but in that case maybe I need to add some ground crew.... and a fuel truck....

Maybe I should just settle with a baseplate LOL

Hey guys,

It's time to wrap up the build of the Tunnan.

It's time to get the pitot-tubes out of the way - it may be more logical to include them in the main build before priming and painting, but since they are very delicate (especially in 1/72) it's soo easy to wreck them with all the handling especially during the weathering process, so I tend to wait until the end to put them on...



Under-carriage mounted. It was quite tricky to glue it in place and get good stability. The paint peeled off and I had to clear the surfaces a couple of times before I got it to stick together. I've seen people on forum masking all the joints when the prepaint parts - I'll keep that in mind...


Glorious! Not a tailsetter (you never know before the fat Tunnan sings....)


Sight/HUD and headlights mounted (see on the photo that front wheel needs some adjustment). That small sight was really awkward to glue in place with the front window in the way. I had to use a pair of bent tweezers looking through the windscreen to align it proper while the CA glue cured (think fast!).
Needed a couple of retries before I got it right


Finally time for the ejection handle of the "raketstol" (rocket-chair in Swedish) and the canopy in opened position.



Tunnan is hanging out with the new kid on the block...


If I get the time and weather I will take a couple of outdoor shots with my DSLR tomorrow.

I have decided to to make a dio so I will order some stuff and leave the thread hanging for a week or so.
