Re: Accuracy vs Rivet counting..... Your opinion?

Post by coladito1 »

Ok So after reading most of the post here I can see clearly now where this has shifted to. I did not create this Thread to complaint about what a rivet counter is, no no no!!

So Please READ THE QUESTION BEFORE POSTING!!!.

I'm not saying that all the posts here have not contributed to the topic. But I am going to say that a lot of the post have been referring to what a rivet counter is or what our opinion on them is, That is NOT the purpose of this topic, if it was, I would have put something like "RIVET COUNTERS: YOUR OPINION?".

I have read most of your post and some of them are very impressive, but unfortunately, I feel like I have to remind everyone of what this topic is about. that is it.

Happy Modelling everyone!!

My apologies Chief. I do sound a little shouty dont I? I will fix this asap. Cant do it from my phone. I was just trying to make sure everyone knew what i was talking about. Again, please accept my apologies.

One thing i will say is that trash talking will not be tolerated. That includes to anyone. Even those who might be considered as rivet counters to others. Thanks for your understanding.

Hey Luis, we know what you meant bud. It's not always easy to get the tone of what what you're trying to say over well in test.

I've seen some forums where people are just downright rude, but never on ISM - that's why it's the best I guess!

It does?
I actually didn't know that.
I don't have a cell phone... and I chat online once every decade or so... guess I'm old and out of the loop.

My 2 cents worth:

Luis asks for opinions on accuracy verses ‘rivet counting’; then goes on to pose the question:

“How do you go about giving constructive criticism without sounding like a rivet counter?”

Here it seems ‘sounding like a rivet counter’ is negative? So the simple answer to Luis' question would be: don’t be a ‘rivet counter’.

But … I don’t think putting accuracy up against rivet counting is a valid comparison? If there can be more or less accuracy, then isn’t a ‘rivet counter’ at the one extreme of accuracy and perhaps OOB at the other?

Who determines how accurate the build is going to be? I suggest in the Work in Progress topic the builder starts up, he/she should say something about the ‘level of accuracy’ that they want to achieve; indicating comments should also be measured against that goal.

Good point there Mikhail, the situation i find most of the times and the reason for my question is that a lot of times Constructive critism ( and that includes accuracy) is often confused with rivet counting. Most of those times it comes from advance modelers that are just trying to help a beginner. That person might not know how to take that and defends him/herself by calling that other person a rivet counter. That happens a lot on Youtube, for example Lets take a person who is new at the hobby and doesnt know much about the model being built, then poor "john" points out an inaccuracy and then gets the label of rivet counter. I think that a lot of times the GOOD intention is confused by Rivet counting.

That is why I think one should be careful of how to point out those inaccuracies without sounding critical or as someone who is picking on the model just to show off his/her knowledge of the model. At the end of the day one should always encourage the builder and compliment that person to keep a positive attitude and experience for that modeler. Just my 2 cents.

Luis,

Thanks for your considered response. YouTube is a 'universe' onto itself: people wanting their 12 minutes of fame (Andy Warhol). People (some/many?) use it to play out their version of say 'RealityTV'; i.e. being assh****. 'Media is the message.'

But a dedicated forum is a different animal...by nature of the beast ( ). The builder is the initiator and in my opinion 'responsible' for 'setting out the stakes' of the build... and who he/she is in regards to modeling; hopefully thereby inviting appropriate responses.

2 cents + 2 cents = 5 cents; that's good arithmetic :hand:

The respones that are invited here on this forum are expected to be positive reenforcement. Critisism is by invitation only. And when it is invited it is always to be constructive in nature not pedantic and demeaning.

Don't over analyze this.... its only worth 2cent Canadian

The same can be said .... in How do you tell someone they Suk? without sounding like a prik?

Its almost impossible ! now a days there are a lot of peoples without any sort of inhibition and they will post anything !
on you-tube or what ever type of websites... we seen it all.... well almost !

We have to walk on eggs when talking to peoples on line cuz... we don't know how they will react ?
and how can we tell if the person is older or younger ? very hard to tell in deed ! for all we know we could be dealing with
Trolls or Bipolar individuals... or just plain folks with less skills or experience or less means by which they can produce quality models...

I still know peoples that puts fire crackers in their models after they are built!!! I will never understand it but it seems to be popular !

Some web sites host very harsh peoples and they don't mind Hard criticism... I tend to stay away form
places like that ....as they feed from each-other... and in no time at all, you have the whole pack on your Case !

I am not nitpicking at anyone's model as I wouldn't want mine to be dissected like that...

short answer.... Luis ! maybe YES you will sound like a Rivet Counter or over zealous, if you nitpick at peoples models!
not everybody research their kits ? I know I do ! others do as well in order to understand what we are building...

others.... consider this just a pass time ! think because its a Tamiya... its perfect ! I am sure you know peoples like that !

in other words Luis... this is a very touchy subject... Glad you open the door so that it can be discussed !
