Do i.... or don't i ??

Post by wappynutter »

My predicament is this fellow plastic lovers... and I may waffle so stay with me. :wtf:
When the Scifi SiG started I in my stupidity thought I might give it a go and drew up some sketches and brought in some plasticard and even knocked up a cardboard prototype ( as you do ) of the build I intended to enter.
..Then I read the rules a little closer and noticed there was no mention of scratch build entries.. :(
Scratch building as I read it was allowed but as extras for the kits being worked on. I came to this conclusion because the above rules stated box shots and sprue shots and being unstarted....
I have never asked any admin or given it further thought until Sunday when I finished some little bits and picked up my cardboard creation and decided " lets do it " and began to cut up some plastic and make some templates etc... :shhh:

So I'm asking you all, ( as I have noted not a single fully scratch built anything on site ).... Shall I post and log the build in the scifi section?
Would anybody be interested enough as this is a rough, no plans, no kit parts available ( well I have found a resin kit in the USA at $100 plus postage ) for this scifi build ?
I don't have a scale but I am working on about 1cm to 1foot ratio.

On a build material side of things I like to use, plasticard/styrene sheet, old bottles, lego pieces, broken toy parts, straws, plastic rod, wire, dowel, and any and everything out of my scraps and recycle box to get the desired effect.
I really am a rubbish builder...
Now I do have about 18 or so kits in my stash, mostly 1:35 armour, 4 scifi ( SW and Trek kits ) and even a couple of 1:72 planes on order to "have a go" at. But I still have not glued a single kit piece together since about 1980. I always have for the last 22 months just scratched some styrene together and Ta-Da... and it kinda looks like its supposed to.. :shifty:
This could be a very traumatic experience for me and for you, and render some of you unable to model again..... :eeek:
No its bad but it usually comes out fair at the end..( I have 3 or 4 build logs on another scifi site that look okay )
Some of you have seen my "London" model and my "Palomino" build, all from scratch and without any real plans.

So let me know what you all think before I get to far in on this idea, and as its not gonna get in the SiG build maybe Lee or Paul could re-word the rules and regs for the next one so I can.... ( if I find anything )... enter please.... :violin:

Oh and did I mention my photography skills are rubbish also, so don't expect amazing pictures as I will mostly be using my phone for these....

If it's built totally from scratch I don't see a problem dude, as long as there are no 'kit' parts involved and you post regular build shots...

I for one am looking forward to see what you're going to produce and how it turns out, enter it into the sic-fi SiG :th:
Where does all the bloody time go.....?

I am willing to take the risk in order to watch you create something which I am sure will amaze and inspire. Go for it and don't look back.

It sounds like a great idea and to be honest from the start when Lee and Paul created this website I remember Lee saying its a forum for "all scale modellers" so that doesnt mean a kit :)

So I would look forward to seeing a scratch built build would be pretty epic!!!

Go for it dude if it is allowed :th:

Thanks indeed, I'm honoured

I found 0.5mm plasticard to be the best for strength and ease of cutting but you probably have your favoured size already :thumb1:

I'm assuming you have also caught the scratchbuilding bug btw not sure I have the guts to build something completely from scratch, that to me is a step far above what I have so far done. Can't wait to see what that pile will become.

Sorry Ian, just had to be done..... :D
...and no you ain't missed it, I'm scratch building a sci-fi build and all will be revealed in my SiG log over the next 24 hours along with some sketches, intros and the beginnings of the build....
So.... :shhh: its a surprise...
Unfortunately 50% of forum users won't know it, those old enough will pretend they don't and a few true closet geeks will be over the moon....

No problem DC...... I use from 0.5 to 1mm mostly as I buy it in 5 a4 sheet packs for about a £5 plus postage. This build I am working on will use these thicknesses along with some eurocell flat fascia board and some upvc window trim for all the thick support pieces..
I have even used 1mm credit/ lotto cards ( free stock ) to build in the past but you have to remove a clear film off the top side or rough it up well to get it to stick.
I like turning a fair likeness of something out of nothing. I don't build for the "exact replica" finish just whatever makes me happy. That's the whole point of gluing bits of plastic together I think.
....and there is always someone who will like what you do and thank you for the memories and tips and encouragement you provide.
Hopefully a couple of folks on here will feel that way with this build.. :thumb1:
Fingers crossed.... :cheers2:

Well that's it modelling friends..... I have started my SiG build log .....
Feeling a little anxious but I have been hacking up plastic for the last day or so and taking pictures to get the build up to speed....

Will post some on the build log later but for all those that don't remember or arnt old enough to remember, go take a look, there is lots of info and some excellent links to some fan pages.... :D
Thanks for encouraging me to start this build, and Coen you must remember this subject.
:cheers2: guys...
