Eduard weekend 1/48 Nieuport 17

Typical nice painting on the box top



Instructions are one double sided sheet of A4.






and the transfers are on a titchy little sheet. The windscreen has it's own bag.



There are two sprues, I've already chopped stuff off them obviously.






The underside of the top wing. I sprayed the whole aircraft in Alclad Dull Ally and then used Tam gloss green and red for the ends of the wings. I used Halfords grey primer out of the can to prime.



Underneath the bottom wing. I'm still getting used to filling gaps. It's annoying when it feels ultra smooth to your fingers then you spray it and it looks like the Alps. Still, every day is a learning day.



The prop. I sprayed this with Gunze H37, wood brown then overcoated it with Vallejo Woodgrain (or Wookgrain as they call it...). Leaves rather a nice effect I think. Photo doesn't show it very well.



That's it for now. I've drilled some holes in the tailplane where the rigging goes through. Rigging should be a laugh...first time I've had a shot.

Talking of rigging, there's no rigging diagram with the weekend edition so I had a look at their Profipack edition on Eduard's website and downloaded the instruction sheet with the rigging on.

Had an hour on it this morning. Got the stitching on the side painted, the screen on, the machine gun on although there were no location marks for it or the ammo chutes so it was a best guess on my part. The struts are on and a bit of rigging finished.



The decals are on the top wing. I thought they were a bit thin and delicate but I'm not really experienced enough to make a judgement on that. I brushed a bit of Quick Shine on to lay the decals on and Micro Sol'd them.



The tail decals were a bit rough, the amount of overlap was ridiculous so I decided to spray the tricolour on. Should get that done after lunch.



And jobs a good 'un. Much better than the decals, and also the same colours as the wings.

Got the rudder on today. Have you ever tried gluing one razors edge to another? What a faff. Also had a go at the tail rigging.





Got some of the mainplane rigging done, that's it for tonight.

Bit of a mare this evening. Had the job nearly finished, all rigging done and then came to put the top wing on. It doesn't fit.... So...decided to remove all of the wing rigging and instead of putting the struts on the bottom wing and trying to mate the top wing to it, I've taken the struts off the bottom wing and put them onto the top. I'll try doing it that way round and then do the rigging with both wings attached. I'm going to have to shave about 2 mil off the main struts to get it to line up.

And...deep breaths, ocean blue and Om Mani Padme Hum.

Well it's about done I reckon. Managed to get the wing lined up after a fashion and all of the fiddly bits put on. Just to show that it wasn't going to give up without a fight when I came to put the skull and crossbone decals on they fell apart... This is my first proper go at a WWI kit and it's been quite a challenge. I reckon I spent half the build time putting things back on that fell off/were knocked off by me the damn thing is so delicate.

So this then is the 'special' version that no one has ever seen before without the skull and crossbones. I don't suppose anyone has a set of 1/48 skull and crossbones?..
