Help on academy early production version tiger-I.

Hi,

I'm posting to ask for some help from fellow modellers. I have tried searching the forum and can find lots of builds with this model but I'm after specific advice.

I can't seem to add a picture below of the model as the pic is too big - it's the academy early production version tiger-1. The white box.

What are people's thoughts on this model, any advice of things to Avoid or try? I want to fit photo etch but can't find the kit for this one, any advice? The quality looks ok at first glance, no major ejector pin marks or mould lines.

I have done a lot of models but still learning and any advice would be good.

Hi Meany,

First, in order to post pictures that are too big they have to be shrunk. The easiest way to do this I've found is to upload them to Photobucket and then post from there.

I'm building a later version of the same kit, although I'm pretty sure that its basically the same thing. It an OK model, certainly not the best. Its not too hard to build, although be prepared to do a lot of filling and sanding of ejector pin marks. As for photoetch, I'm using the Aber kit. If, like me, you're new to photoetch, I would go with another one. The Aber set, although well detailed, is not designed well. Only about half of the pats have appropriately partially etched bend lines, and so you have to guess where to bend. I have an Eduard kit for a different model, and from a cursory inspection I don't believe it has the same problem. This may not be true for the Tiger 1 kit, but it might be a good place to begin researching.

There aren't many reviews of the kit that I can find.
Actually... all that I can find is this review by Alex Modelling and he isn't a Tiger modeller. It's a decent show of what's in the box though, but not a good analysis of the parts.

This was the first 1/35 scale kit I ever built (And my second piece of armour, ever). It's a kit from 1996 and builds up fairly easily. Details on some of the finer parts like the edges of the molded tow cables are a bit fuzzy but I otherwise had no problems with this kit. Comes with some figures which is nice but compared with what some companies can do with plastic nowadays, they're a bit soft around the details too. Think of this kit like an older Tamiya kit. No fit issues, straightforward instructions but not the most complex thing. Vinyl tracks, as always, are a bit of a dog and the decals in my kit were way out of register, especially bad on the balkenkreuz.

That one right there is basically identical witch exception of the extra interior parts.

Thanks ever so much for your help, it has helped me loads. The photo that my lightweight has added is the one. Knew it would be worth registering on this forum. I'll try to find the eduard photo etch. I used them for the lrdg I am doing currently and think they are ace.
