1/35 Tamiya - Sd.Kfz.222 Leichter Panzerspahwagen 4X4 Afrika Korps - 3rd Recon Battln 21st Panzer Division 1942

Post by rodrant »

Hi guys ,

I' can't be without doing any models , and being modelling a quite important escape to my day life , and still with plenty of time to do some more builds for this great SiG , a new entry :

A Tamiya Sd.Kfz.222 Leicher Panzerspahwagen 4X4 i 1/35 , will depict a vehicle from the 21st PAnzer Division , 3rd Recon Battalion , in North Africa in 1942 ...as Not to store away the stuff from my last build and seems a quick and enjoyable build , so off we go ...

The box :

Image

Inside the box:

Image

Some Photo Etched glued in the box ...the anti grenade grill and a barrel in metal...nice ...

Image

two parts for the hull out of bags , and the bags with the sprues ...one of them brings a moto and a raider ...this will do an OOB build and vignette almost without the need of anything else ...

Image

Image

Acessories ...nice !

Image

Image

decals

Image

Instructions

Image

Color (actually ...black and white , with some grey ) schemes ...three from Africa, one from Greece !

Image

Image

Will use this base for doing a small vignette

Image

and found a metal Palm tree from Andrea miniatures ...like Palm trees and the desert !

Image

The instructions are very nice ...some info on the organization of the Armored Reconnaissance Battalions both in 1941 and in 1942
The symbols of the Panzer Divisions depicted and some history of the organization and re-organization during North Africa Campaign .
Also some very interesting history on the development of the vehicle , and how the Germans got from the restrictions of the Versailles treaty to the train of the German Army using some 'dummy' armored cars in which they train their doctrines and mechanizations of the Blietzkrieg tactics , and later adoption/evolution of this Light cars for their role in Armored recon !Really Great !

Image

Image

Image

then Tamiya usual stuff

Image

17 steps total with the figures , accessories and moto build ...

Image

Image

Image

Image

Image

Image

Image

Image

Image

Image

Image

Image

Image

Image

Image

some miniature maps to cut and use

Image

Figures, the raider on the moto can be done choosing two different poses and two heads, one has a scarf covering his face , nice touch !

Image

First sprues

Image

Image

Image

and for today we are like this , a very easy build , only have to cut and sand the sprue remains, as normal in almost all Tamiya builds , no issues , clear instructions ...so no problems ...to paint his will try some new Mr Hobby Modulation colors that I buy recently , one of my goals in this build is to try my first modulation paint job ..will see if I ruin such a nice kit :-)

:cheers2:
Cheers ,
António

Progress ...

the build is fast and no Big issues ...I decided to build the all thing to paint and later do the details with brush

Image

Image

Here the gun ...was starting to paint the X10 , but then i decide to build the all thing , paint in Dark Yellow and after paint the details , the gun in X-10 and the seats in XF-49 Khaki ...

Image

The gun barrel is in metal , it comes with the kit and must be primed with -metal Primer

Image

the gun in the chassis

Image

Image

Image

Well , then all is ready to some paint , must place the anti grenade grills also in PE

Image

Image

Nice kit ...

Image

only miss some stowage ,

Image

maybe I still have some left from a build of the SDKFz 8 wheller that I did some time ago ...

Then I primed the vehicle with some Tamiya White Primer ...

Image

Image

the grill PE mesh was very hard to prime and paint , as the mesh easy gets covered with excess paint , after must use some pin to clear the paint from the tiny holes :-)

While was drying , some figures to make ...they look very nice , again it is a very nice kit to make !

Image

After that , time to get some paint ...

WIll use a Mr Hobby Modulation set ...IT will be my first tome and ill use it a little paint free , only to try to make some paint differentiation ...

Image

This is the stuff , that color was the dark yellow base

Image

Instructions ...in Japanese ...actually I found in the Internet some English instructions

Image

4 steps ...

1st ( and i now know this ...) to use the dark color ( shadow ) and use the base color (Dark Yellow) to initiate the process..., I use the Dark yellow only ...didn't know before reading the English instructions

Image

Step 2 is to use the 1sst Highlight

the step 3 , second highlight , and finish with the shadow again , this tie very dilluted ...

Image

I also bought the other two avaiable , the Panzer grey tones and a Olive drab ...nice and will try to experiment some more in the future !

Image

Image

While everything was druing and after some putty (Liquid Surfacer from MR Hobby 9 in soem of the figures arm joints to the torso ...but used very little

time to start the Moto

Image

Image

and done ...fit nicely ...must be carefull how to glue , use very little (extra thin here is the stuff) , the fit superb , and very nice littel Moto

Image

ET Phone home .... :-)

Image

Primer on the figures ...

Image

Dark yellow mixture of Modulation colors for the Moto

Image

The result of my modulation experiences ...actually , I didn't spray panels and so , I try to airbrush freely and used all the Highlights and shadow paint ...I then decide to make a color variation were I liked , and it was quite fun to do , even it isn't done properly I must admit , I liked a lot the end result ...

Image

Now to paint the figures , moto details and the details on the SDKfz ...now to think on the base ...the first base that I thought it is small , but think will do , will start on the base maybe tomorrow .

thank you for watching

Well done António, this looks to be turning into another 1st class build.
I am interested in watching you build a small display base to show the kits on.
That small motorbike is excellent and those modulation set look interesting. Unfortunately they would be wasted on me.. Lol.. :D
Continued success, Stay safe and well... :thumb1:

Thank you Andy !
Actually , this modulation setis quite nice, but you could do the modulation yourself , add a little white , or dilute the color more ...is it me , I'm a lazy guy , and buy everything ...still didn't use it as I should , but I liked e result in the end !

Cheers , and stay well my friend !

Update ...
Painted the details in the DKW motorbike

Image

Image

Painted the figures also

Image

Ready for a clear Gloss coat

Image

Time to start on the accessories , Fuel Drums and Jerry Cans

Image

'Steel' cable done

Image

and decals next after the Gloss clear coat

Image

Image

Image

After placing the figures and a Clear MAtt coat , time to start thinking on the diorama base , decided to use this new base , the first that I thought was little for what I have in mind ...

Image

I use a wash from AK for DAK vehicles

Image

with no flash

Image

Image

The accesories painted in the sprue

Image

Started the diorama base , used some Terracota clay ...

Image

Decided to do a small wall , so for that will use this small stones , bought them some time ago in a supermarket , this is for decoration , for placing in plants and flower pots , very usefull for making dioramas , I hve it fir a long time now and use it often in the figures bases and in the dio's I have done ...

Image

So masonry work begin...

Image

Image

Will use some AK plaster for 'cement'

Image

add some water ..

Image

Image

Looking at the figures decided to add something ...the raider was honored to have a MP40 , some left over form my SAS build ...also decided to do the googles strap with some Tamiya masking tape , and also a strap for the MP 40 , in the end it was a nice result and things do not seem gravity fixed :-)

Image

Image

Image

Also decided to add a signal to the diorama , so go to my stash and search for this , usefull stuff to have at hand !

Image

This small pole and a Signal to be used

Image

Also from my spares box , a German HElmet , a ammo MP 40 pouch and a water bottle were added to the motorbike

Image

Image

Meanwhile accessories are ready , three fuel drums , 4 Jerry cans, the ones marked with a white cross are of the water .

Image

Base ready for primer , will use the Vallejo IDF DArk SAnd Brown , will make a nice color base to later add the more lighter colors , sand and earth tones
Image

Image

The signal ...

Image

decalling , first use some Wood filter color from AK to enhance the wood effects

Image

Ready ..and very nice ...

Image

Now the Palm tree , while the base is drying

Image

A white metal trunk and branches ( do not know how htey are called in a Palm tree :-) ) and PE leaves

Image

Clean with a file all the branches

Image

Cut the leaves ...they were damaged , they are 16 leaves ...

Image

Here

Image

and here very damaged ..transports and storage as I have this for some long time

Image

more updates next , almost done now must be some patience to dry the base and to put more paints on it ...will finish the base placing some pigments form aK , but will show that later ...

thank you for watching

:cheers2:

So my last update before the final reveal

I completed the priming of the base and I painted with a mixture of XF-52 Flat earth , with this I airbrush the more darken areas , and later I gave an overall coat with XF-57 Buff color ...the idea was to create two tones and to give also some variation in the wall color ...

Image

Added thePalm tree , painted the trunk with XF-52 Flat Earth and the leaves with XF-5 Flat Green ...I used a littel yellow to create some dry end of the leaves ...

Image

Placed the small sign

Image

Here some detail on how the wall was ended ...I like the result :th:

Image

Place the moto and AFV to see how it looks

Image

Image

DEcided to add some more stuff , some wooden boxes ...yes less is more , but I really like to see this around :-)

This are from Black Box from a box that I buy some time ago , need to buy another as IT proves really usefull to have this around for a diorama !

Image

Painted with some of the yellow color from the modulation set , and I'm beggining to think that I foud the different wood tones with to paint my Wooden mosquito in Nige's Mosquito SiG ;-)

It really is a nce wooden color

Image

Use the wood weathering set , it has two filters and a Wood wash ...

Image

Image

Place now the fuel drums, Jerry cans , the boxes on the diorama ...

Image

Image

Image

Image

With AK Pigment Filter and AK North AFrica Pigment Dust ...I will add the final touch to the base ...

Image

Well now will be some final revela Photos, I can only place the photos during the weekend as I must take them in Daylight , hope there is sun ...

I place now some Photos in FB , if your interested go and check ISM FB page ! I promise I will do the reveal thread next week end , See ya !

Thank you for watching this build !
