Tamiya 1/48 A6M2 VJ 48hr build.

Post by modelingaddict82 »

I'm building the Tamiya A6M2 zero for the 48 hour VJ build. First tamiya kit since being back into the hobby and this kit has been a dream so far. I do have the bottom seem where the wing and body join giving me issues but it's more of a rushing it thing than a kit thing lol. I did pull out the great AK FAQ2 book to do a little scratch building for the engine and it came out great IMO.

Thought I was going to have for issues as I dry fitted last night but with some masking tape applied from wing to wing it fit great ImageImage

Progress for last night ImageImage

Wiring started for the engine today and this turned out better than I thought. I used lead .010 for the wiring and painted the engine grey/green. Image

First set of wires in and second being placed

Engine completed and weathered with AK engine washes and stains. Dry brushed with AK extreme metal aluminum.ImageImage

Cockpit completed and chipped using a watercolor pencil.

Everything put together and taped so the wings won't have a bad gap.

That's Progress for day one, have to fix the one seam then basecoat on top of decal and weathering. May be close but I think it will be done :)

I love the Zero. Lovely model and good progress so far.

I love your metal on the engine idea. That's why I love this site....so many good and often simple ideas from some very skilled people.

Thanks

More progress from today. The fading was better than I thought. I base coated the gray/green then went through afterwards with a mixture of gray/green and white. I didn't preshade this and I think it turned out very well. Image

Faded the bottom but not as much due to it not being objected to the sun and elements.

Faded the engine cowling the same way.

Aqua gloss applied and you can see the fading much better.

Canopy masked off and boy did this suck. Next time I look into eduard masks lol Image

Ultimate wash applied. Mixture of mud, light dirt, and winter wash. Nice tint to it but didn't have dark dirt so had to compromise. Needless to say I ordered dark dirt :Image

Wash cleaned up and even chipped the decals for me in the process Image
