KTH ev11 Formula SAE car

I visited my old race team today (actually was delivering some brake parts for their new car) and saw that they had a newly 3D printed model of the car. The car is a small formula style electric car that a team from KTH The Royal Institute of Technology has build over the past year and will compete against other university from all over the world. At the competition you have both dynamic and static events, the static events include engineering design, cost and business plan, so they had this model printed to show the judges at the competition. When I saw it they where lightly sanding it and where planing to maybe spray it with some spray can, and I for some (dumb) reason offered to paint it properly using the same paints they used for the real car. My first plan was to just sand it and give it a nice coat of filler primer and then paint, but as I was looking at it I realized that I wouldn't be happy with just a quick paint job. If it's worth doing, it's worth doing it properly and I have been wanting to do a model of one of these cars for a wile now so this is as good chance as any. The biggest problem right now is that they are leaving for the competition on Sunday so I have to have it done by then.


The actual car.


The 3D print, they had already broken off the rear wing and I managed to brake the one of the wheels.


But that's not too bad as my plan was to cut off the wheels and wings so I can attach them later with piano wire.


Covered everything with a coat of Tamiya putty thinned with cellulose thinner.


And after a bit of sanding, there is still a bit more needed, mainly in some corners and the back of the floor.

Managed to get some more work done. Started with putting some paint on the body.


A layer of primer.


Some Tamiya X8 Lemon Yellow.


And finally some X14 Sky Blue

Next task was to try to fix the wings. The first problem is that the resolution of the 3D print isn't that good so there is a lot of steps. And the End plates is way too thick.

Cut all the wings apart.


Next up was to cover one of the front and one of the rear elements with some 0.3 mm sheet.


And made some molds, so now I just need to make some resin copies.

Thanks, yea they do look a bit odd with the very short wheel base (just over 1.5 m) but super fun to drive. I did manage to finish this for the team before they left for the race but it was tight and I didn't have time to do all I wanted.


Scratch build wings.


Got some black paint on as well as a coat of clear. Also scratch build a roll hoop for it.
