Tamiya 1/48 De Havilland Mosquito

Post by T3hGuppy »

Okay so as promised here are the first shots in the box.
ImageImage

And Im very pleased lovely looking parts and not too hard to build.
ImageImage
ImageImage
Image

Instructions seem to Tamiyas normal high standards but it also came with a big sheet painting guide which is nice and 1/1 with the kit.
Image Image

Their are 3 choices of aircraft to paint 2 bomber and one arial recon.
ImageImage
But I wont be doing any of them because I really want to do an aircraft with invasion stripes so I will.
Though I will be using the decals that came with the kit.
Here an example of what I'm after one wartime pic and a more modern one.
ImageImage

So a few firsts for me with this kit.

1 It will be my first aircraft bigger than 1/72 scale.
2 First paint job with invasion markings.
3 First twin engined aircraft.

Will be doing this gear down with no crew as comes with opening hatches and ladder.

Will hopefully get cracking on this tomorrow

I wouldn't imagine you would find a B MkIV with invasion stripes as I believe they were earlier versions of the Mossie, as they became fighter bombers later in the war rather than the light bomber they were at the start. I could be wrong, and frankly I wouldn't bother, if you want to stick invasion stripes on a B MkIV then go for it!

I have built the Revell version of this kit, was a nice kit.

Right so I have begun and so far very nice.

Image
Painted the interior of the wheel bay silver as shown in instructions and also painted the exhausts dark metal but these are then completly covered so not really a needed step
Image
Nacelles went together very well only slight sanding will be needed on the air intake housing.
Also got the wing interior for the wheel bay sprayed.
Image

Now time for dinner then on with the detailing and washing

So moving swiftly on I picked out some of the details on the wheel bay and gave them a wash

I used Citadel devlan mud which is a dark brown colour.
ImageImage
Also got the wings together and nacelles fitted.
Image Image

So far this has been a great kit and fits together really well only a slight gap where the wing top meets the engine nacelle bit this will be fixed with out too much effort.

As always comments and criticism welcome.

The detail in the cockpit is nice, but I think the Revell version of this kit is actually more finely detailed. But this should build up nicely!

Yeah their dies seem to be a bit more on the Revell kit.

Right so I have begun work on painting the cockpit.
Image
So got the green sprayed then drybrushed the raised parts with the same colour lightened with some white.
The instructions call for this decal to be used on the instrument panel
Image
I wont be using this as painting the detail will be more fun and a good test of my detailing skills and brush control.

Image
Finally painted all the relevant parts black.

Still a ways to go but happy so far.

Right so with the Tiger all finished I've been cracking on with this build.

Finished up the cockpit and I'm really pleased with it First time I've painted a full cockpit.
(Wont win any medals but think It looks right) Used a bit of artistic license on some of it.

Next on to the Bomb bay.

Yeah the kit came with decals for the seatbelt but don't really like them. Not sure what I will do.

Most PE sets come with loads of bits I wont use.

Got a while yet before I need to make a decision lol.

Tin foil might work or even tamyia tape I've done it in the past and it works quite well.

Yeah no major issues with it at all tbh. Glad I used the satin varnish between layers though just to be sure.

Only a couple of bleeds too which didn't take too long to tidy up.

Looks cracking mate. Mine is sitting unloved on a shelf without a canopy, which is a shame as I am really pleased with the kit and want to get it finished so I can show it off properly. I also need to make a stand for it, as my rescue attempt from its previous paintjob left the undercarriage a bit broke.....

Hahaha funny thing. I have built the Revell version of this plane, and I have just noticed that the decals I used on mine are of the same squadron as the ones you have used on yours! Mine has code GB-D, and serial DZ549. Shame I haven't painted D-Day stripes on mine, otherwise they could be from the same squadron at the same time lol.

Looks good though, although there is a small air bubble on your "J" marking, it might have settled itself though.

Hehe cool stuff dude.

Looked at the J and either something is stuck under the decal or its part of the kit. Don't want to risk tearing the decal checking :nena:

So I've finished the decals and happy just letting them settle and dry out before varnish then I can start weathering!!

Re: Tamiya 1/48 De Havilland Mosquito

Accuracy be damned indeed! I think this kit must come with more or less the same marking/decal options that the Revell kit comes with. Oddly Revell apparently don't make their version anymore, which is really annoying as I needed a replacement canopy from them and they didn't have any! So no idea how I am going to get a canopy for my plane.

Holy Crap Gupp,
I haven't been keeping up on your Mosquito in about a week and the first thing that popped up when I hit the latest post button was the shots of the cockpit.
I near fell over.
Then I couldn't stop scrolling. WOW.
This is just plane (haha) gorgeous!
As Lenny says... You make me sick!!!!
I love it.
