Lead, as a solid, for the small amount of handling that a modeller would use it, is a minimal risk. To keep any health risks at the absolute minimum if your handling it bare handed, is don't touch anything that goes in your mouth until you've washed your hands, ie snacks, sandwiches and cigarettes. The other tip for lead as a solid is to wash your hands as soon as you're done and wash in cold (or room temperature) water, this will help keep the pores in the skin closed and less likely to absorb any lead particles.
All this changes as soon as you start to create lead dust or fumes. Gun ranges have a high level of lead in the air, so shooting, heating, soldering with lead all require more steps to protect yourself that a modeller won't need to worry about (unless they solder).
