Marine SBD-1 1/48 Pushing Forward

Post by fightnjoe »

Tis that time of year again. It is time for my Pearl Tribute.

For this year I am finishing off a sister kit to one I did a couple of years ago. This is the Accurate Miniatures 1/48 SBD -1 from the Marines at Pearl Harbor set.

So far not a lot of time but I did get through steps 1 and 2a as well as part of 2b. These are constructing the cockpit and all the little details provided. i added the detail to the port and starboard as well as most to the floor. There are some things that I will not add until after I get some paint on this.

Does not seem like much but on the last few this would have taken about four to six weeks.

And moving right along. Geez this thing seems to be just falling together in the box and I just take the pictures.

Paint on the interior. I do need some touch up but for the most part it looks ok. I may highlight with Chrome Silver just to bring it out a bit more but here it is.

Image

And wow is the fit good on this thing so far. This is dry fit only.

Image

It does not look like it but there is hardly a seam at all. Quite a good fit.

That is it for now.

Hey Joe, is it nice to just build a kit every now and then? Your scratch work is amazing, but it's probably a relief to just scrape, fill and sand every now and then :)

I have to say that the OOB builds scare me a bit more. I am afraid I will get lazy and mess up.

Re: Marine SBD-1 1/48 Interior Color Change

Post by fightnjoe »

Just a brief update from me.

After a few comments from folks who know a whole lot more about these than I do and just a bit of research from me, the interior got a different color. Interior Green. I have seen a site that shows a SBD-1 with original paint. It shows Interior Green. So there I go.

Repainted.

Image

Added a couple of the interior parts but for the most part just the color change.

Well I am choosing to move forward on this one.

Detail painting as well as some chipping. I know it might be overdone a bit but I did try to keep it light.

Next will be to close up the fuselage.

A quick update showing the fuselage together, the wings on, and the tail feathers attached.

I am really impressed with the fit and the clean attachment of the wings and tail feathers.

Image

Not much for seams at all. Now to sand them out and get the little bits on.

Re: Marine SBD-1 1/48 Long Overdue Update

Post by fightnjoe »

Wow ... has it really been two months since my last update on this?

I guess so.

Guess I should show what I have done huh?

Not much really, the interior is ready to go and the canopy is now firmly in place.

She is ready for paint.

Re: Marine SBD-1 1/48 Moving Forward

Post by fightnjoe »

Well my friends here I am again.

After a bit of rough sailing with the paint I can update the work in progress. The painting process was: Flat Black overall. Model Master Aluminium Plate on specific panels, Model Master Neutral Gray sprayed in a very random pattern, The same sprayed concentrating on the panels. The look is very subtle but should be picked out ok with pin washes. There was an issue with a sandpaper like surface appearing after the initial spraying and the second spraying of the Gray. It was knocked down with 1000 grit sandpaper.

Image

The engine was sprayed Gloss Black, Alclad Polished Aluminium, and then the crankcase drybrushed with Flat Gray, The "wires" were painted to instructions as Red (Empire Red).

Image

Overall I am pretty happy with the results although the rough texture was a confusing situation. Still no idea of what it was or why it happened.

Next up is application of decals. At that point for the most part this build will go dark. I will post one photo of the finish but I am trying to determine if this will be written up or not.

All comments, critiques, and criticism are encouraged.

A quick update.

A couple of things. The aircraft has been glossed, decaled, and glossed again. The wheels and hubs have been prepped and painted.

Image
Image

Not looking too bad to be honest. Now the finishing touches can be added. Flaps, wheels, weathering, cowl, prop, and antenna wire are left to add. A final Matte coat to finish it all off. Not far to go on this one.

Also with this update I come to a point where I need to decide whether to write it up or not. I am just not sure on this one. If I do write it up she will go dark until I get a yes or no from the editor.

All comments, critiques, and criticism are encouraged.
