Tiger and a bit of a ramble

Post by wolfsbane666 »

Up until this year I hadn't built a model since I was in my teens, which is way too long ago to dwell on, but my daughter and I are very into the Marvel universe  so I bought a Dragon 1:9 scale war machine kit and started doing a little research online to reacquaint myself with the hobby. This turned out to be a big mistake as I stumbled upon one of Pauls videos and discovered ISM so, naturally, now I have no life, no money and my wife thinks I'm having a mid-life crisis LOL. I am now working on an Iron Patriot model with Thor, Iron Man and Nick Fury waiting in the wings I haven't posted anything here as my work is nowhere near the standard to interest anyone here and I know its not really subject matter that would appeal but I really love reading the threads and watching the videos I have looked at quite a few forums and You Tube channels but this group seems more down to earth, despite the high standard of work, not elitist or as cliquey as some others. Anyway I just wanted to thank everyone for getting me back into the hobby and, I'm sure you will be pleased to know, I have just bought a piece of armour the AFV club scorpion which leads me to a question and the Tiger in the title of this thread. I would like to get a 1:35 Tiger tank model and try out some of the new techniques I have picked up but which kit? I don't want to spend silly money but I do want a detailed kit that will offer a challenge because I enjoy the building side as well as the finishing I was thinking a decent kit with some worthwhile aftermarket recommendations. I am not worried about model, type etc. I have just always had an interest in the Tiger tanks and I like to build something that I have more than a passing interest in. I hope at least a few of you stuck with me through this ramble and can offer some guidance to a wandering pilgrim who has embarked on the long journey to scale model enlightenment.

I did a Youtube video on this called Tigers for dummies although a lot has changed since then. Honestly i'd lean towards Dragon 6730 or 6820 currently. They were on sale Thursday for $30 on Dragonusaonline, now not so much. Dragon Tiger kits are challenging but not too bad. If you could find 6383 the late with zimmerit for cheap that'd be great too. No matter what you'd need aftermarket tracks, friul maybe, i use afv club sometimes but they can be flaky and crap. I also did a few videos where i break down and discuss Tiger builds after the build but before paint.

By the way i'd love to see how those Dragon Marvel kits go together, going to get one soon for someone.

Thanks for the reply I will certainly take a look at the videos. The Dragon kits are very easy to assemble and they go together really well with all of the major seams concealed really well. I have found the Iron Patriot really difficult to paint as there are some really fine lines which, due to the shapes and positioning, are nearly impossible to mask. The kits are great though and I'm sure for most of the guys on here they would produce excellent results.

Welcome back Sir.

I was the same, hadn't modelled for ages then Airfix bought out their 1/24 Typhoon. I wanted it but I wanted to do it well with an airbrush and all the painting techniques that go with it. Found the videos released by Paul from this site and I was up and running.

Can't go wrong with Dragon and Tamiya, I'm relatively new to armour but have made both and loved them both.

Happy modelling and get well involved in the forum. This is a great place for all the chilled out modellers who love the hobby and respect their 'brothers'.
Its been tried and tested, it works! So don't blame the system if you're no good.

I know that I'd be interested in seeing your work bud. Any and all modellers are welcome and invited to post their work, regardless of their skill level, budget, length of toe, or size of hair piece.
That's one of the great things about this forum, all are welcome and enjoyed... For real.
The other great thing about it is that you can post freely without ever having to worry about ridicule or unsolicited critisism.
So don't be shy bud... Share if you like. Many here are massive sci-fi, fantasy, comic universe fans.
I may be one of them :eeek:

Get it done mate !! Your summary of this forum is spot on, very welcoming and helpful with an abundance of knowledge to be shared........!
In my mind, build what you want any way that you want.....modelling is a hobby and is about pleasing you , if you build to please someone else it becomes a chore!!
Looking forward to seeing your work?

I got back into the hobby a little more than a year ago after I found an old Revell kit stowed away in the attic. My spouse had bought me that many years ago as birthday present, as I had told her that I where building kits as a kid. I googled up scalemodelling, found ISM and Pauls videos on how to build aircraft and the next day I went out and bought some tools and a cheap airbrush.
After struggling with the kit for 2-3 weeks I managed to complete it and it looked like crap, but nevertheless I posted some pictures on the ISM FB page and got 50+ likes and lots of encouraging "great job for a first kit" and "keep up the good work!".

Now, ofcourse I knew that the kit looked like dogshit, but the response I got boosted my confidence and made me want to get better and learn more. ISM is an great place if you want to learn from the best or just want to hang out with the guys and build in your own pace. No one will demote your work or your ideas or the technique you choose to work with and everyone will help you when you get stuck with a problem or need references.

I think you should post your work, there is no risk doing it and you will get tons of positive feedback in return. If you ask for advice people will help you, but only if you ask.

I saw this post because I'm also planning to build my first Tiger - it's a Christmas present to myself. I will start a new thread about that, since I don't want to hi-jack this conversation.

Cheers!

Thank you Adam for the great videos. If my finances ever get that wiggly that I can afford a model, I will do me a Rye Field Tiger.

Brilliant videos Adam thanks very much and to all the words of encouragement from everyone. I found a great deal for the dragon 6253 on e-bay and my lovely wife said she would buy it for me for xmas so I am going to see that great little bucket for real. I hope to have something to show soon and I will be a bit more confident now I have broken the ice.

Unfortunately Dragon has reissued 6252 and 6253 kit with no goodies at all, so please check that the kit is the old one with MagicTracks and goodies and not the new one with DS tracks.

I almost bought one of these myself this weekend before I doublechecked the kit content

Glad to help, anything you need don't be afraid to ask. 6253 has been re-released as was just said, so be careful. If you were going to get the rebox, 6406 is exactly the same as that. And then again 6383 is that but with Zim parts and no command antennae.

Not true. I started here not long ago as a rank amateur and I've picked up so much from this site. I had sort of floated around other sites before choosing this one as some of the others seemed to be a bit OCD. I build for relaxation and enjoyment, I don't sell models or put them in for competitions, I'm not really that interested if I paint something the wrong shade of black, if it looks OK to me then it is OK and I must say I've had nothing but encouragement from the members here and my modelling has improved tenfold. This is a great community besides a modelling website. Post your work up, I've said this before but posting up your builds pushes you to make that extra effort.
Regards, Dave.

Thanks again and I found your videos very helpful indeed, but I got a really good deal on eBay, under £30, so I grabbed it even though I'm not sure which version it is I decided it was worth it. I will find out at xmas.
