Hello from a Chicagoan in Los Angeles

Hi all!

My name is Alex, I just turned 30, and I'm currently living in Los Angeles, though I grew up in Chicago (where I'm currently visiting family for Thanksgiving). I must admit that model building is a secondary hobby for me. My primary passions in terms of pastimes are history and aviation (esp. flight sims). I have a blog devoted to the former and YouTube/Twitch channels for the latter (see my profile for links if those kinds of things interest you ).

But I do dabble in modeling. Honestly, I think I've watched more modeling videos than I have spent time modeling myself. I think the modeling community on YouTube is fantastic, and I've learned a lot from them (not to mention hearing about this forum). When I do model in my absolutely amateur way (I don't even have an airbrush yet) I build ships and aircraft from WWI and WWII, as well as dabbling (hopefully in the future) in wooden ship modeling. I get intimidated by the fine details of projects (e.g. sanding/filling awkward seams esp. on WWII aircraft; layering paint schemes on aircraft; fixing mistakes) but I'm learning and building confidence slowly as I build.

Hi Alex, looking forward to you posting some work. If you get any problems the guys here will always help, but don't worry we all find the fine detail hard work but the more you do the more it gets easier.

Thank you kindly for the welcomes! I finished a quick build (no paint, just build and decals) for practice over the Thanksgiving weekend:


I must admit that I don't really like painting as much as building. Maybe it's the setup/cleanup involved (my hobby desk doubles as my work desk) or the waiting involved in letting the paint dry. I also don't have an airbrush so feel like my paint jobs will come out inferior anyway. I'm also not as patient as many of you, and I think I'll strive to work in the style of "quick builds" that are exhibited on this YouTube channel that I found recently. In addition, I may focus on plastic (20th-century) ships as there's less intricate painting involved, arguably, than with aircraft. Let me know if you see any flaws with my logic there.

Well, enough complaining. I think I'll finish up a 1/72 Mig-3 for practice that I started a while back, and then move on to the USS The Sullivans ship.
