If it ain't broke....!!!

Post by burnie43 »

Hi guys
So I have a massive collection of Tamiya acrylic paints which I have used for years......and while I have always been aware that some of their colours may not be quite accurate.... I build armour mostly so who cares?/, I can mix and match the paints to get the shades that I want and as you know military vehicles change colour very quickly due to the conditions etc !
I have for many years used car windscreen washer fluid to dilute these paints for airbrushing and I have never had any problems !!
SO WHY CHANGE ??....
Well I really liked the look of the Mig Ammo range in the wee bottles, great names for the colours, not just dark yellow etc but Dunkelgelb etc !!!! and in many different shades!!! ( the German colour names really tickled my fancy!!!) so away I went ,I was bed ridden and in need of some retail therapy so my card got luldy ( translation on luldy if required )......and hey ho after a few months I had quite a collection of Ammo paints so away I went on my painting and modulation attempt on the Tiger that I am building.......!!
I will cut to the chase now peeps ...
Mig Ammo paints do not paint like Tamiya ones !!!
With Tamiya I never seemed to go wrong and I could just batter on with all the colours ....no messing around ! With Ammo I had to re-train myself...aaaagh.....after I re-painted the Tiger twice I got it the way that I wanted on the Dunkelgelb colours and I was chuffed as I thought that it looked exactly the way that I wanted....then I added the green and brown camo and completely ruined the paint job !!!
Runs, overspray , splatters, airbrush clogging.....need I go on?!?
I have now rectified the paint job and it looks okay ( pics to follow once it's finished I hope !!) and I hopefully have the Mig Ammo way in my head now but I did ask myself on many occasions......... " Mark, it ain't broke so why fix it ? " but you know what.......?
I looked around at all the different mediums that I have in my model room and thought about all the different techniques available and I realised that for me, modelling it's as much about trying new things ( techniques and materials )as it is about the modelling itself, and that's why I use ALL the different materials in my collection and I buy products that float my boat and are NEW to me!
Just wanted to share my thought folks.........
thanks
Mark

Yep those are 2 totally differnt kinds of paint
Personally i don't like the Ammo paints as i was having a real hard time gettimg them to work right
So i decided to give them to a buddy who does like them
I use Tamiya and mr hobby aqueous paints these days
Both work the same allthough the aqueous is finer so it gives a smoother finish
But Ammo vlaims that they make a real acrylic paint and that is why it acts the way it does
I could not agree less as vallejo is also a real acrylic and i have no problems with that paint other then the tip drying
And they make a retarder for that , well now they do after i got frustrated with the stuff
But in the end each paint and primer has its own pors and cons
It is just a matter of finding the one that works for you

If Tamiya just expanded their range they would be the ONLY paint I'd ever use! I don't know why they don't come up with more of the standard colors in other ranges. As much ch as I would love to have a rack (or racks) full of different paints, I know I simply can't use some of them like I can with Tamiya and Gunze Aqueous.

For airbrushing my favourite is Model Air. I know some folk here can't get on with it but I think it's the best thing since sliced bread. I also have a load of Tamiya, which is not bad so I'm going to use that up and replace with Model Air as I run out. Model Air brush paints very well weirdly enough, unlike Tamiya.

I think it's wise to try new stuff, buy maybe a pot or two to give it a go.
Regards, Dave.
